Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits
Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits | David Wong, Jason Pargin
INCLUDES A NEW AFTERWORD New York Times bestselling author Jason Pargin takes readers to a whole new level with his darkly comic sci-fi thriller, Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits. An Alex Award Winner Nightmarish villains with superhuman enhancements. An all-seeing social network that tracks your every move. Mysterious, smooth-talking power players who lurk behind the scenes. A young woman from the trailer park. And her very smelly cat. Together, they will decide the future of mankind. Get ready for a world in which anyone can have the powers of a god or the fame of a pop star, in which human achievement soars to new heights while its depravity plunges to the blackest depths. A world in which at least one cat smells like a seafood shop's dumpster on a hot summer day. This is the world in which Zoey Ashe finds herself, navigating a futuristic city in which one can find elements of the fantastic, nightmarish and ridiculous on any street corner. Her only trusted advisor is the aforementioned cat, but even in the future, cats cannot give advice. At least not any that you'd want to follow. Will Zoey figure it all out in time? Or maybe the better question is, will you? After all, the future is coming sooner than you think.

A barista's estranged billionaire father dies, leaving her fortune but also his enemies, including a dudebro with the wealth and technology to build an army of supervillains. Mayhem ensues. It's an over-the-top action thriller with comic-book sensibilities and I found it a lot of fun and frequently funny.

If Zoey Ashe had known she was being stalked by a man who intended to kill her and then slowly eat her bones, she would have worried more about that and less about getting her cat off the roof.

This book is really freaking funny. It's also a bit violent and maybe a little bit gross. I can't wait for the next one.

This opens with Zoey being stalked by a horrible human while she's trying to get her cat (Stench Machine) off the roof of her mom's trailer. Great opener, right?

My Book Outlet order came. So excited to finally be addling these to my collection. I adored John, Dave, & Amy's wacky adventures and Futuristic Violence is a new favorite. I haven't read NOS4A2 yet but owning a physical copy means I am that much closer. Now if only I could get my bookshelves built so I had somewhere to put them.

Guildedearlobe While I love John Dies at the End, I think Futuristic Violence is his best book. I‘m stoked for the sequel. 6y
jackilynn @Guildedearlobe I would have to agree with you. As much as I enjoy John & Dave's shenanigans, Futuristic Violence is my favorite of the bunch. The sequel can't come soon enough! 6y

This book was a very good read. At first I was a little iffy about reading it because i absolutely love Wong‘s John and Dave adventures. But it took what I love about those stories and added a healthy dose of Blade Runner. I highly recommend it

Once again diving into the crazy world of David Wong. I enjoyed my time with John & Dave so much I decided to see what else this author had to offer. Fingers crossed it is just as much fun as the others I read. Nothing says futuristic violence like the T-800 & I may not own a fancy suit but I have this snazzy tie 🤓😜

TobeyTheScavengerMonk 5th best book I read last year! Enjoy! 7y
jackilynn @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I have to say I am enjoying it so far. This authors writing is proving to be dark and disturbing (at times) but more often than not down right hilarious. I don't know how he comes up with this stuff. 7y

Started this audiobook this morning (although I did start it last year, I only got a few chapters in) and while it's not quite the John Dies At The End style humor, it's still funny and futuristic and fancy. I was up late last night and needed something to keep me awake and amused on my morning drive.

I expected this book to be funny and action-packed. What I was not expecting was a body-positive anti-classist indictment of frat bro rape culture in the form of a science fiction fable.

If you squint this book could be We Should All Be Feminists with more severed hands and exploding cyborgs. (Like way more severed hands. Like a Star Wars trilogy's worth of severed hands.)

Trigger Warning in the comments:

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Our heroine mentions that the villain has "rape threat Tourette's" and yeah, that constitutes about 70% of all the words that come out of this guy's mouth. 7y

I usually roll my eyes when I see the old "someone was screaming and I realized it was me" chestnut, but this had just the right twist.

Guys, you really shouldn't have tried your big plan to take down the bad guy 55% of the way through the book. That's a guarantee that things are going to go way off the rails. Never try the big showdown until at LEAST 80% if you want things to run smoothly.

Since humans first associated sounds with written symbols, no sentence has been more perfectly crafted. Truly this is the pinnacle of literary achievement. All effort with the written word from this point on is futile. We must meditate on this in order to achieve nirvana.

avalinah This is really weird, because I'm sure I have never read this book, but I just had the strongest dejavu ever 😃 I feel like I've definitely read that sentence somewhere! Must be the existencial perfection of it 😂 7y
Kittens_Books I tried to put my thoughts into words when I was reading this but you've done it effortlessly. Wong's handle on writing and dropping the weirdest things into a sentence - and still having it make sense - is second to none!!! 7y

"The people of Tabula Ra$a fell into roughly three camps in response to the terror threat:..."

Sometimes you read something that hits you like nobody has ever been hit before. In the wake of the various terror incidents that have hit my hometown in the past 3 weeks, I have been struck by the spirit of the people in town. They don't give up. It's just an inconvenience to have to deal with.

David Wong nailed human spirit, pass it on.
