Wilderwomen | Ruth Emmie Lang
46 posts | 35 read | 21 to read
Exquisitely drawn characters imbue Lang's unconventional plot with verisimilitude and heart, inspiring readers to ponder whether the world is stranger and more beautiful than it appears. Effervescent, ethereal, and suffused with wonder. -- Kirkus (starred review) Lang's melancholy, atmospheric writing sets the perfect tone as the Wilder sisters unravel the mystery. The result is a cozy supernatural outing perfect for an autumn night. --Publisher's WeeklyOhioana Book Award finalist Ruth Emmie Lang returns with a new cast of ordinary characters with extraordinary abilities in The Wilderwomen. Five years ago, Nora Wilder disappeared. The older of her two daughters, Zadie, should have seen it coming, because she can literally see things coming. But not even her psychic abilities were able to prevent their mother from vanishing one morning. Zadie's estranged younger sister, Finn, can't see into the future, but she has an uncannily good memory, so good that she remembers not only her own memories, but the echoes of memories other people have left behind. On the afternoon of her graduation party, Finn is seized by an "echo" more powerful than anything she's experienced before: a woman singing a song she recognizes, a song about a bird... When Finn wakes up alone in an aviary with no idea of how she got there, she realizes who the memory belongs to: Nora. Now, it's up to Finn to convince her sister that not only is their mom still out there, but that she wants to be found. Against Zadie's better judgement, she and Finn hit the highway, using Finn's echoes to retrace Nora's footsteps and uncover the answer to the question that has been haunting them for years: Why did she leave? But the more time Finn spends in their mother's past, the harder it is for her to return to the present, to return to herself. As Zadie feels her sister start to slip away, she will have to decide what lengths she is willing to go to find their mother, knowing that if she chooses wrong, she could lose them both for good.

The story follows two sisters, Zadie and Finn, as they try to find their mother, who disappeared five years ago.
Finn has the ability to see echoes of people's memories. She uses this gift to try and retrace their mother's steps using her pieces of her memory.
The mystery was very intriguing, but the part that bothers me is that Zadie has psychic gifts. Why did she not see her mother's disappearance coming?
Overall, this was a good read.

I breezed through this one in two sittings. It was an engrossing story with loveable characters. It felt like a metaphorical journey the author was sorting through, and I was here for it.

Beautiful writing but the story was a little bit scattered in parts and in some ways it was almost too wordy. It felt like it could have been cut down a bit. I did like how it came together and the ending was a really nice one that worked well to tie the whole book together. Overall, I enjoyed this one, but definitely think it could have been a little shorter.

Ruth Emmie Lang has a way with words that truly takes my breath away. This story gave me all the feels- realistic emotional connections between family and friends, set against a very out-of-this-world story. I found myself so angry at certain moments and so ecstatic at others - when you read it you‘ll understand why! 🥹 if you find magic in everyday nature, this book is for you.

Unpopular opinion, apparenty, but I loved this almost as much as Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances...though the ending felt a little rushed. Nonetheless, I was pleasantly surprised given the poor reviews. The writing was lush, the eccentric characters were lovely, and the plot was lighthearted enough to make this work.

Falling in love with underdog new releases seems to be a trend for me this year! #botm

I found this book to be just “ok”. I found parts interesting, and other parts not so much. Even though the story is based on women with extraordinary abilities, much of it seemed a bit too far fetched for me.

Enchanting and creative, but with a hint of melancholy, this book whisks readers away on a magical journey with memorable stops and vivid characters along the way. I really loved Zadie and Finn and found myself re-reading beautiful sentences. I‘m still pondering the the ending and potential metaphors/symbolism. I think this read would inspire great book club conversations and a sense of wonder and adventure. #BOTM

This read is about a road trip between sisters looking for their mother who had disappeared 5 years ago. It was slow in parts, and somethings seemed a little disconnected. This could have used a little a bit more editing, but it was an interesting idea. Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for this read.

I loved Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances. It was my intro to magical realism. When I saw Ruth Emmie Lang had a new book out, I had to read it. And it's about sisters. 🥹 This book is beautifully written. A story of two sisters looking for their missing mother while guarding their hearts from abandonment. Not as good as Beasts but a solid ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫. I hated for it to end. ❤️

This one is a slow pick for me. I liked the sister bonding but it seemed like they were barely teens rather than 18 and 23. I also thought there were so many distinct elements of magical realism which made the story more fantastical than I expected. Sometimes that‘s the way it goes when I judge a book by its gorgeous cover!

JenReadsAlot I'm reading this now and so far I'm feeling the same. I loved her first book! 2y

In theory, this book sounded right up my alley.

In reality, I found it a bit of a slog.

Zadie and Finn are half sisters whose mom disappeared five years ago. They use their psychic abilities to try to find her.

I kept wishing they would find her already so we could ALL move on with our lives 😄

PS - We went to the woods to get our Christmas tree yesterday, and I brought the book for the photo op

Not only is this a great magical adventure tale, it is also a really nice, lyrical explanation of sorrow, growth, and looking for what‘s been lost. While the pacing isn‘t particularly quick, the tone/style plays well with the content and gives the book a beautiful solemn undercurrent.

Lang has warmed my heart again! She writes imperfect characters you want to root for.

Zadie and Finn‘s mom just walked out one day and never came back. Young Finn was taken in by a wonderful foster family, but barely adult Zadie had to fend for herself, driving a wedge between this sisters. When Finn graduates high school, she convinces Zadie to use their sixth-sense gifts to search for their mother.

This is a magical realism and mystery book about sisters and family. I didn‘t know much about this book before I picked it up, but thought it was just great. I don‘t want to say a lot about it, since I think it was just actually released this week (maybe last week).

Ruth Emmie Lang explores family relationships with a solid dose of magical realism in her new book, The Wilderwomen. It‘s a sweet and engaging exploration of sisterhood and the complications inherent in mother-daughter connections. This is my first venture into the world of Ruth Emmie Lang‘s writing. It won‘t be my last.

Listed as a YA Magical Realism story, this book is a bit hard to describe and odd for me. Zadie and Finn are sisters with paranormal abilities…Zadie is a psychic and Finn can see past memories. Their mother, Nora, leaves them for no apparent reason when Zadie is 18, and Finn is put into the foster care system. Five years later, with Zadie pregnant from a defunct relationship and Finn graduating high school, Finn pushes Zadie to set off 🔻

robinb cross country to find Nora (she‘s seeing memories from her mom‘s past). Thus begins an adventure of discoveries as they search for the truth of why and where their mother disappeared. This is told from varying perspectives (all 3 women) and because of that was a bit convoluted at times for me. There are some twists and turns, some dangerous moments as well as some heartbreaking ones. I‘m not sure how I felt about the 🔻 2y
robinb denouement/ending, but overall I saw it as a good story about families…their strengths and their weaknesses. There‘s some symbolism (and some I probably didn‘t catch) as well as instances of how much we‘ll sacrifice for others. Forgiveness and understanding are big as well. All in all, not a bad read, just unusual/unique. 4/5⭐️ 2y

I adored Ruth Emmie Lang‘s debut novel so I had high hopes for this sophomore release. Unfortunately, even though I sensed it was supposed to make me feel things, I was rather indifferent to it all. It was quirky like Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance, but the emotional component did not hit right for me. I never found myself especially eager to get back to this, either.

This was a heartfelt read that in many ways reminded me of Sarah Addison Allen's books. It follows two sisters with magical powers who are searching for their mom.
