The Echo Wife meets How to be Eaten and The Final Girl's Support Group.
I am very glad I did not figure out what was going on until the reveal - I'm even more relieved this was not a 'the husband did it' plot.
I really admire the book for presenting the doubt in motherhood, and a character who is not shamed for deciding that motherhood and marriage were not right for her only after having tried it. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? The main perspective is that of the woman who chooses to be a wife and mother, who wants to stay, so subjectively the judgement could be there, but the narrative leaves room for an individual to make their own choice.
The commentary is clear on which figure society sees as more sympathetic - the young mother being the role model victim - the original clandestinely slipping away to a new life
2mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? - though that probably has more to do with the fact that she can't just pop up without creating issues for the cloning company and possibly herself given the murder investigation.
I'll admit for a while there I was more enamoured of the first half than the second, when the first had the literary sci fi bent of examining how a woman fits back into her life as a clone of a previous self, how a VR setting could provide intimacy,
2mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? could provide catharsis for murder victims - though I guess that last one's more a second half revelation; how the serial killer and the cloning board both seem to view the women as special and yet homogenous, replaceable, the idea of women feeling devalued, unrecognized even as they're unable to escape public attention. 2mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/? Then there are the non sci fi related questions around dealing with a sense of self, mortality, vulnerability, being a woman not automatically meaning victim, even as trauma, as media, as society keeps trying to attach that label; the struggle for control, obviously the concerns about trying to be a good mother, worries about connecting to one's child, physically and emotionally, even before post partum depression is suggested. 2mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 Because the second half shifted into murder mystery mode I thought I was losing the contemplative pieces but the last revelations, the choices available, the role cloning actually played, that the husband actually played, really worked for me.
Similar to The Echo Wife, all the comps above, really, I enjoyed how this worked out way more than I thought I would. Adding another 'clones' book to my favourites pile!

Another book that didn‘t quite work for me although I can see how and why it would be quite popular. A group of women have all been murdered by a serial killer and have been brought back to life by the “Replication Committee”. One woman works to investigate the mystery of her murder. An interesting conceit and covers some heavy issues like post-partum depression, but ultimately it just felt too far fetched for my liking.

I LOVED this! It was so unique and I wasn‘t really sure what to expect. In a world where people can be cloned and therefore sort of brought back from the dead, this group of women who were killed by a serial killer are given a second chance. However, like in most stories, not everything is as it seems. This ended up being more touching drama and less thriller and I can‘t say I‘m mad at it. I loved the blend of science and emotion. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This was incredible. I was thoroughly absorbed from start to finish.

A dark exploration of what it might be like to be brought back to life as a clone, with added twists and turns. This is not really a murder mystery, nor pure sci fi, nor lit fic, but incorporates elements from each genre to create a stunning whole.

I couldn't put it down.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Speculative murder mystery? Ok, I‘m in. Women murdered by a serial killer are cloned, then reintroduced to their lives by a government program. It‘s an … adjustment. On the surface, I love this concept, but I wanted the execution to go deeper. The twist is underwhelming, though contextually believable. I just wanted a little more development. Regardless, it‘s a solid read.

One more #BOTM read completed for the challenge, although I listened to the audiobook of this one. A really unique premise-a woman is cloned after being murdered & tries to find out who killed her. Bit of a slow start but the ending was tense & good. I had to go back & listen to the end again to make sure I understood everything that happened so it might have been easier reading instead of listening, but the narrator was excellent.

It‘s a coinkydink how themes sometimes blend together. This happened with my two Litsy book club books & my own own pick.
We read Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow which had a video game in it. I then read My Murder that has a video game in it AND a serial killer survivor support group. NEXT up for #LitsyBookClub is The Final Girl Support Group, which is about the girls who survived the serial killers in slasher movies!

Take a well-used serial killer thriller trope and give it an innovative premise involving cloning and this is what you get. I really liked this right up until the VR gaming aspect came into play and then it pretty much lost me…not completely, mind you, but enough that I wasn‘t as invested in the ending as I could‘ve been.
- Rebecca Lowman's narration was sufficiently performed.

So I enjoyed this for the most part -- I didn't predict the twist, but it was definitely in the set up (if you're paying close attention). Lou is a happily married mother of a toddler. She's also the victim of a local serial killer. Recently brought back to life and returned to her grieving family by a government project. Grateful for this second chance, the new Lou re-adapts to her old routines, and as she bonds with other female victims, she realizes that disturbing questions remain about what exactly preceded her death and how much she can really trust those around her. 4-Stars

Louise and 4 other women are actually clones of women killed by a serial killer. They meet together for support in navigating this strange reality. I was enjoying it but it was getting a little bland until about halfway through when a plot point seriously got my attention. I love some of the choices Williams makes in this and suspect the ending will anger some readers, though I really liked it.

#UnpopularOpinion I just didn‘t connect to this book the way so many others have. I found the pacing off and it was really confusing. There were times when I thought this book was brilliant and then at other times simply bizarre. More sci-fi than mystery/thriller this book had so much potential but I found it unnecessarily complicated. Even the narration ran hot & cold. I like @Megabooks comparison to Echo Wife.

Loved this one! Echoes of The Echo Wife, but I enjoyed this more.

Louise was murdered by a serial killer. She and his other victims were cloned and reintroduced into their old lives. They meet in a support group, and each has an interesting reaction to being brought back to life. But when Louise finds out she might not be like the others, she must follow the clues to find out why. A fun SciFi twist on a serial killer mystery!

The whole time I was reading this, I kept thinking of J.P. Delaney‘s book, The Perfect Wife, as it had a similar vibe. However, the differences made it so I was kept on my toes about what happened to Lou. I really enjoyed the journey until the end. It was lackluster and not fleshed out well. The “why” is missing.

This will NOT be for everyone, but it was for me! I went in blind, as readers should for this one. Such an interesting concept explored in this book. I don‘t want to reveal the situation beyond saying that the MC is actually trying to figure out more about her own murder. I loved the setup and didn‘t see it going in the direction that it ultimately went. A book about the value society places on women, motherhood, and identity.

Interesting book. This takes the murdered woman trope and flips it on its head. Set in a not too distant future (she doesn‘t tell us, but technology is familiar, yet advanced), it‘s a bit speculative fiction, a bit mystery. Fast paced- I easily read it in one sitting yesterday afternoon.

But overall I was enthralled I listened to it on audio and found myself extended my jog and biking to keep listening! Lou was a great main character, easily relatable and nonthreatening, and I loved the near future vibe with self driving cars and VR and clones!

I thought this was going to be more mystery/sci-fi, but I'd say it's more literary. Which is fine. I still liked the book. Our protagonist is a clone of a woman who was murdered by a serial killer. So it's a bit dark, but it's just absurd enough to relieve some of that darkness. Glad I picked this for #botm.

Couldn‘t put this one down. A serial murderer kills five women and they‘re brought back to life by the “replication committee.” The narrator, one of the women, is on her own journey, trying to figure out why she was murdered and if it went down the way the reports claimed. There‘s even a virtual reality game of the murders where the women try to outwit the killer. The twists keep coming, all the way to the end!
