Hawaii: A Novel | James A. Michener
Pulitzer Prizewinning author James A. Michener brings Hawaiis epic history vividly to life in a classic saga that has captivated readers since its initial publication in 1959. As the volcanic Hawaiian Islands sprout from the ocean floor, the land remains untouched for centuriesuntil, little more than a thousand years ago, Polynesian seafarers make the perilous journey across the Pacific, flourishing in this tropical paradise according to their ancient traditions. Then, in the early nineteenth century, American missionaries arrive, bringing with them a new creed and a new way of life. Based on exhaustive research and told in Micheners immersive prose, Hawaii is the story of disparate peoples struggling to keep their identity, live in harmony, and, ultimately, join together. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Centennial. Praise for Hawaii Wonderful . . . [a] mammoth epic of the islands. The Baltimore Sun One novel you must not miss! A tremendous work from every point of viewthrilling, exciting, lusty, vivid, stupendous.Chicago Tribune From Micheners devotion to the islands, he has written a monumental chronicle of Hawaii, an extraordinary and fascinating novel.Saturday Review Memorable . . . a superb biography of a people.Houston Chronicle

I just finished my Q3 #chunksterchallenge2023 book and I absolutely loved it. I‘ve read so much historical fiction over the years, but knew absolutely nothing about Hawaii. This was my first James Michener, but it definitely won‘t be my last. Love these buddy reads with @Kelly326

Thank you for hosting, @Amiable We are already talking about possible reads for next year! 💙
#bookspinbingo

Amiable Yay for the chunkster love! I was meh about the one Michener I read, but I‘m glad you enjoyed this one! 1y
GinaKButler @Amiable I‘m curious which one you read. We‘re talking about reading “The Source” by him for one of our books next year! 1y
Amiable @GinaKButler It was this one 1y
GinaKButler @Amiable Oh…good to know! Thank you! I‘m interested in reading Poland (I‘m 3/4 Polish), The Source and this one: 1y

I‘m starting my Q3 #chunksterchallenge2023 today! Planning on reading ~15 pages daily with my book-buddy @Kelly326

My mom has recommended this author in the past, so I‘m excited about this one (and it sounds perfect for the beach!)

@Amiable

Amiable Nice! Have you read Michener before? I read one of his for a previous Chunkster Challenge—I think it was this one: 1y
GinaKButler @Amiable This is my first by him. 😊 1y
BookNAround I loved this book when I read it decades ago (I‘m old). I can still tell you plot points from it too so it definitely stuck with me. 1y
GinaKButler @BookNAround I‘m excited! I haven‘t loved the other two chunks I‘ve read this year…I have high hopes for this one! 1y

For my #readhawaii challenge I started with this title. I‘m a sucker for any sweeping saga type reads. This one defies description. So very very good. This book totals over 1,000 pages so be prepared for a lengthy read. But it‘s well worth the time and effort. Historic fiction at its best. #readhawaii #mayreading

Bklover I loved this book although I read it so long ago I don‘t remember much except that I loved it! May have to reread this one 3y
KristiAhlers @Bklover it was so good. My dad suggested it. He‘s a big fan of this author. 3y

I went to a secondhand store to innocently browse around for two things I haven‘t been able to find anywhere. Then these books were on a “Free to take” table. So yes, they moved in with me 😊 I adore the taste in books this generous person has! Some of my fave authors 😍

MayJasper James Clavell! I read all his books many moons ago. I wonder if I would enjoy them as much if I read them again. I hope so. Enjoy 😊 4y

#OldCoolBooks #saga

Someday I would like to have an old cool edition of Hawaii by James Michener, definitely a saga and a chunkster, to go with my Hawaii-based books. The original cover is on the top left and some of the older paperback covers are along the bottom. My edition is on the top right and is from the 80s. It was picked up at a used bookstore to be a beach read when I first moved here.

Leftcoastzen Love seeing all these great covers! 7y
ReadZenRites I remember seeing the one on the bottom right-hand corner at my house at some point back before I enjoyed reading. I couldn‘t understand why anyone would choose to read such a thick book 😂 7y

Currently reading:

- Hawaii (James A. Michener) because we're planning a 2019 trip there
- Secrets of the Tudor Court: The Pleasure Palace (Kate Emerson) because it's been on the shelf for years (so far not so good)
- A Wrinkle in Time (Madeline L'Engle) because the movie is coming out soon!
- Bad Girls Throughout History (Ann Shen) because this world needs more girl power, and I've always loved a bad girl story!

We are deciding on Hawaii for our winter vacation this year. What book set in Hawaii would you recommend I read before I go to get in the mood? Do you have a favorite read on the beach/by the pool rec? I have been to Oahu once a few years back, this time we will head for the big island.

JulAnna I don‘t know if it will help with your vacation pick, but Moloka‘i by Alan Brennert is a really interesting read! 😊 7y

Picking this back up. After a really great intro chapter, I kind of got turned off at the beginning of second section and set it down for a couple of months. I've now gotten back into the story and am really enjoying the writing. This is definitely an "in my wheelhouse" type of book- armchair traveling, history, culture, biography of a people.

Lynnsoprano Of those Michener books, Hawaii is the best, IMO, and best place to start. 8y
julesG @Lynnsoprano But if I start with the best, won't I be disappointed by the other ones? 8y
Betty @Lynnsoprano I was going to say the same thing! @julesG I haven't read Mexico or Caribbean which is why I'd say Hawaii 8y
See All 7 Comments
Lynnsoprano @Betty @julesG I liked Caribbean but my husband hated it. I bailed on Mexico. Some of his books are more approachable than others, and I'd put Hawaii in that category. (edited) 8y
Reviewsbylola I've been curious about Michener. 8y
HannaPolkadots I've read both Poland and Chesapeake earlier this month and they left me wanting more Michener. Really a brilliant storyteller, his books are long, detailed and often span over centuries, but he manages to keep it interesting. Buying more next time I find anything by him ❤ 8y
julesG @HannaPolkadots I've read a lot of Edward Rutherfurd, which got boring after the fourth book. 8y

I want to go back 🌴🌴BUT just to visit. I lived on Oahu for five years and while I loved being on the island, five years was enough for me. But damn if I don't miss the weather and being able to drive anywhere and see the ocean! It's absolutely beautiful and honestly my kind of weather. Except for that one time it rained for 41 days straight 😳😂

syasutake I also lived in Hawaii for five years! My husband was born and raised there. 🌴🌺🌈 8y
TheNextBook @syasutake My son was born there! I went to college there, met my husband an eventually left. It was harder after having my son because all of my family is on the mainland. But as a college student it was perfect! Five amazing years! 8y

syasutake Where did you go to college? I'm a UH Manoa alum, class of '97. 😄 I understand about wanting to be closer to family, especially after your son was born! I left after I graduated from UH--I did have family in HI but was ready to get back to the mainland. I moved to San Francisco and met my husband there. Coincidence that he was from Hawaii! (edited) 8y
TheNextBook I went to Hawaii Pacific University Class of 08! I loved going to school out there! I'm from Cali so my family could come visit but my hubby's family couldn't. 8y

Day25 #booktober #Ilikebigbooks I like the right big book for the right time, mood, and place. Shortly after moving to Oahu, I decided I should read Michener's Hawaii-all 1,136 pages of it, so I bought a used paperback and carted it along to the beach & everywhere else until I finished it. I followed it with a 'chaser' of Tales of the South Pacific-a mere 384 pages-almost a short story in the Michener world! 🌺🍍🌴

BarbaraTheBibliophage I wondered who would post Michener for this photo challenge. Great story! 8y
