A Magical New York Christmas: A Novel | Anita Hughes
24 posts | 11 read | 11 to read
"Theres plenty to love in this sparkling Christmas rom-com."Publishers Weekly A magical holiday love story set at the glamorous Plaza Hotel in New York City. Its Christmas week when 26-year-old Sabrina Post knocks on the door of the Vanderbilt suite at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, ready to accept the ghostwriting position for the memoir of Grayson Westcotta famous art dealer. A struggling journalist, Sabrina can't believe her luck: a paycheck and six nights in her own suite at the Plaza. She feels like Eloise, the heroine from her favorite childrens books. To make the job even more exciting, Grayson recounts how he worked as a butler at the Plaza sixty years ago for none other than the author of the Eloise books, Kay Thompson. What promises to be a perfect week is complicated when Sabrina meets Ian Wentworth, a handsome British visitor, at the hotel bar. When Ian assumes Sabrina is another wealthy guest at the hotel, she doesnt correct him a decision she doesnt regret after learning that Ian is a member of the British aristocracy. But, things are not what they seem. The truth is: Ian is not a wealthy lord; hes actually the personal secretary of Lord Spencer Braxton. As the week unfolds, will Sabrina and Ian learn the truth about one another? Filled with the magic that can only be found at the Plaza Hotel during the holidays, and revealing facts about the author of the Eloise books, Anita Hughes's A Magical New York Christmas is both a holiday treat and a heartwarming story that reminds us that falling in love is the greatest miracle of all.

An enjoyable holiday romance! It‘s a bit repetitive in places and the word “magical” was seriously overused in the beginning, but as someone who has stayed at The Plaza during the holiday season numerous times, I couldn‘t help but like it!

I want to live in this universe specifically. All of the magic and mishaps of a Hallmark movie, and I just adore all the Eloise references! I do think the misunderstanding trope got blown out of proportion, but I'll let it go. #reread #christmasromance

I REALLY hate to give up on books but I tried reading this one AND listening to the audiobook and I just...couldn't...do it. The writing is lovely, but the main characters were hardly ever together and Ian's life was beyond frustrating. He's a personal secretary to a British Baron but really he's just a babysitter for a grown man. I liked Sabrina and her storyline, but alas, it wasn't enough to keep me reading. #bookspin #dnf

Clare-Dragonfly Life is too short to read books you aren‘t enjoying! 2y
SheReadsAndWrites 😊 I agree @Clare-Dragonfly I still feel a twinge of guilt though. The writing really is lovely... 2y
Hooked_on_books I suspect a lot of personal assistants are babysitters who do the adulting for people so they can do whatever they want. Kinda gross. 2y

I couldn‘t help but get some Fiona Davis vibes since the Plaza Hotel is essentially a character here. The G- rated romance is everything you‘d expect from a Hallmark movie set in NYC - including the miscommunication. But really my favorite part of this, was the second timeline supporting story with Kay Thomas the author of the Eloise books. I‘m now very curious about Kay Thomas!

December #DoubleSpin @TheAromaofBooks

marleed @TheAromaofBooks I‘ve now completed all 24 books for the 2022 BookSpin/DoubleSpin. Thank you Thank you!! I don‘t record in google docs for 2 reasons - first I failed to figure out how to use the technology. But most importantly, I feel like I should be the one gifting you a book for hosting this challenge in which I find myself endlessly entertainment.
2y
kspenmoll I read this last December & was totally intrigued by the Eloise/Thomas storyline myself & also enjoyed learning more about this author! Visited the Ritz but never stayed! (edited) 2y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I'm so glad you were successful with this challenge!!! The giveaway is of course optional, but if it's only the technology keeping you away, please let me know so I can help you through it!! 2y
marleed @TheAromaofBooks haha, no, I should be up to the challenge of figuring out technology- I just didn‘t get the round tuit! But honestly, I just wanted to let you know I fully participated (even got a July bingo back out) even though my name is deliberately not part of the draw. And I can‘t way to try my approach to my 2023 lists! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I'm super happy that it's working for you and excited to see what you read in 2023!!! I can't believe a new year is almost here! 2y

This book was pretty magical ✨ Set at the Plaza Hotel the week of Christmas, it follows Sabrina a struggling journalist as she takes on a ghostwriting job for a wealthy art dealer and meets a handsome British man who is staying across the hall. She and Ian both make assumptions about each other and struggle to reveal their true lives in fear of messing up their blossoming romance. We also get the art dealer's backstory from when he worked as a ↘️

There were a couple of small details about the British aristocracy that weren't factually correct (e.g., the wife of an earl being called a duchess), but they didn't detract from my enjoyment of this book. I adored the setting and the Eloise appreciation, and I'd read another book about Sabrina and Ian any day! #christmasromance #contemporaryromance

I don‘t normally read/listen to Christmas books, but this one has a few nods to one of my favorite childhood books, Eloise & its author, Kay Thompson!

kspenmoll I really enjoyed this! Miss NYC- we usually go at Christmas time but have not since Covid. 3y
tpixie @kspenmoll I have not been to New York City for decades! And I‘ve always wanted to go at Christmas time. I bet it‘s magical! My cousins just went and they said it was very crowded. People are starting to get out more. 3y

3.5 ⭐️: If you enjoy romance & seasonally set novels, you‘ll likely enjoy this 📖. The descriptions of NYC at Christmastime are enchanting, as are the loosely based references to Old Hollywood. Like I do w/ most 📚 in the genre, the lack of transparent communication between the MCs was 🙄. And 💰is discussed a lot, which was tiring. However, if you‘re needing a light, seasonal, “once upon a time” read, this book is likely to satisfy. 📄: 290 pgs.

I'm working my way through my #netgalley backlog. This was a quick and enjoyable read. I love NYC at Christmastime. The Plaza is breathtaking with the decorations, so that made a perfect setting for this holiday romance. #wintergames #teamgamesleighers @staycurious #dashingdecember #anywayyoureadathon #wintercosy #bfc21 #averymerrybingo #averymerryreadathon

Much of this book is set at the NewYork Plaza Hotel, all dressed up for Christmas.Although I have only visited its lobby, this plush setting did lend its magic to the read. Other streets & neighborhoods are familiar to me, especially when Sabrina shops at an outdoor Christmas bazaar, the last thing my family did in the City in 2019. So this book worked its magic on me- I visited NYC vicariously for Christmas in 2021. Romance, the spirit of giving.

This Christmas romance is set in NYC. Sabrina,a soon to be penniless free lance journalist, has taken a job to ghost write a wealthy elderly man‘s memoirs. It is Christmas week and the Plaza where her boss is staying & has booked a suite for Sabrina too, is dressed up for Christmas, which adds to its otherworldly magic. Sabrina is #enchanted.

Chose this book to begin my 2021 Christmas reading. Usually we take the train to NYC before Christmas, but Covid has gotten in the way- our last visit was 12/21/2019. So I will be visiting the City vicariously while I read. 🚉🏙💖

Am I reading a Christmas book in October? Yes. Is it the most delightful thing I have read in a while with multiple book references in the first chapter? Also yes. I must say one chapter in and I‘m in love.
