The Skies Belong to Us
The Skies Belong to Us: Love and Terror in the Golden Age of Hijacking | Brendan I. Koerner
19 posts | 13 read | 64 to read
In an America torn apart by the Vietnam War and the demise of sixties idealism, airplane hijackings were astonishingly routine. Over a five-year period starting in 1968, the desperate and disillusioned seized commercial jets nearly once a week, using guns, bombs, and jars of acid. Some hijackers wished to escape to foreign lands, where they imagined being hailed as heroes; others aimed to swap hostages for sacks of cash. Their criminal exploits mesmerized the country, never more so than when the young lovers at the heart of Brendan I. Koerner's The Skies Belong to Us pulled off the longest-distance hijacking in American history.A shattered Army veteran and a mischievous party girl, Roger Holder and Cathy Kerkow commandeered Western Airlines Flight 701 as a vague protest against the war. Through a combination of savvy and dumb luck, the couple managed to flee across an ocean with a half-million dollars in ransom, a feat that made them notorious around the globe. Koerner spent four years chronicling this madcap tale, which involves a cast of characters ranging from exiled Black Panthers to African despots to French movie stars. He combed through over 4,000 declassified documents and interviewed scores of key figures in the dramaincluding one of the hijackers, whom Koerner discovered living in total obscurity. Yet The Skies Belong to Us is more than just an enthralling yarn about a spectacular heist and its bittersweet, decades-long aftermath. It is also a psychological portrait of America at its most turbulent, and a testament to the madness that can grip a nation when politics fail.

This is a completely fascinating, unputdownable book about the age of skyjacking in the US (1960s into early 70s). It keys in on one particular event involving the pictured two. It also shows the infighting and paralysis of congress to make any meaningful changes that might help prevent these events (seriously, it took them 12 years to require screening). Highly recommend!

Leftcoastzen Wow, that sounds super interesting! Seems ridiculous it took so long to come up with screening . Duh . 6mo
TheBookHippie Oooo. I remember this being a real fear when I flew as a child. 😵‍💫 6mo
Hooked_on_books @Leftcoastzen Completely ridiculous! For me, it put into perspective the congressional indecision/inaction we often see now. It‘s not new! 6mo
Hooked_on_books @TheBookHippie I can imagine! I‘m kind of surprised anyone ever got on a plane! The funniest bit was when they started screening in NY and an employer of the one airline complained to the FAA about loss of revenue on their NYC to Miami flight because all the mafia guys started driving instead. 😂 6mo
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books gotta love the mob! They use to explain what to do if we were hijacked 😵‍💫 I remember that! As for screening it was pretty lax even then IMO. 6mo

My human and my pet are still sound asleep.

I adore this moment on the weekends. Sneaking in some reading time. ❤️

Yes, we do use two separate comforters. It was the best thing we ever did for our relationship. #notkidding 🤣🤣

MicheleinPhilly HA! Brilliant idea! 7y
erinreads My husband and I have always used two comforters in bed. Everyone always finds that weird, so I‘m glad to have found someone else who has figured out how awesome it is! 🙌🏻😂 7y
Soubhiville That is a great idea! I hate waking up to an uncovered 🍑 or knees! Also, early weekend mornings when I‘m the only one awake are heavenly! Reading before the bustle begins 📚❤️ 7y

Karkar My Brother and his SO do the same thing. Separate top sheet and comforter. 7y
TheLibrarian Smart thinking! I might have to steal that idea because I‘m a blanket hog. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa No stealing the covers! Yes!! 7y
LauraBeth I‘m a blanket stealer then wrap myself up like a burrito, so we do this as well so the husband can have a blanket. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @erinreads @Karkar @LauraBeth Yes! People always think this is weird, but we fought all the time about my blanket hogging abilities. Problem solved. We're just all burritoed. 🤣🤣 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Soubhiville 🤣🤣 That is the worst. Especially in the winter. Early morning weekend reading is also my favorite. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @TheLibrarian It is a game changer. People always tell me it's weird, but we sleep better. 7y

I have a special rule that I'm allowed to stay up extra late reading on Thursdays because I only have to be tired for one more day before the weekend.

🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

Come on 11:30. 🎉

jpmcwisemorgan I do this too! It‘s also why I don‘t do much very late on Sundays, unless it‘s a special occasion. I tend to end up feeling tired for more than one day and that makes for a bad work week. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @jpmcwisemorgan Same! I have to be very careful on Sundays. I usually get in bed by l9 and read for only a tiny bit. 7y
KB253 @Ashley_Nicoletto that's a good rule. I'm going to try that next week 7y

Since I am not flying anytime soon, I am going to read this. @Liberty talked about this on ATB, and I was intrigued.

quote
keithmalek

Etymological lore holds that the verb "hijack" derives from the slangy directive issued by gangsters who commandered freight trucks: "Hold your hands high, Jack."

quote
keithmalek

Between 1961, when the first plane was seized in American airspace, and 1972, the year Flight 701 was waylaid en route to Seattle, 159 flights were hijacked in the United States. All but a fraction of those hijackings took place during the last five years of that frenetic era, often at a clip of one or more per week. There were, in fact, many days when two planes were hijacked simultaneously, strictly by coincidence.

In the 1960s, skyjacking was a common occurrence. And Roger Holder & Cathy Kerkow some #slipperypeople manage to pull off the kookiest, longest-distance hijacking in Us history. Journalist Brendan Koerner explores this dramatic, batty and politically embarrassing period of history in vivid detail. It's 🍌👖‼️#wackyWednesday #rocktober

TrishB How scary would that be now 😱 7y
Cinfhen This book was eye opening ~ there was something like 150 "skyjacking" incidents in a 4 year period @TrishB This is back in the day before airport security or luggage screening! It's amazing how naive the US was 7y

This book was fascinating. A very intimate look at both a unique story and a general phenomenon. I did feel a little nervous reading it on the plane this weekend though 😜

This was fascinating! I couldn't believe how non existent security was until 1973! It is not a comedy but I laughed in disbelieve and horror through the entire thing!

This story was banana pants 🍌👖sooo crazy, nobody could make this stuff up! Good read for #NonfictionNovember although I still believe tighter editing was needed.

Oftencantdecide I don't know who this is a picture of but I'm really digging his sweater. The book sounds really interesting too. 8y

My son is due to arrive later today, after traveling abroad the past 5 months ? I'm questioning my choice for #nonfictionnovember as this read traces the history of "skyjacking" and "aviation piracy" ?So far this book is interesting but a little overloaded with secondary sources and tidbits. Can't wait to have him back home ? ?

BookishFeminist How exciting!! 😀 8y
Cinfhen @BookishFeminist still not sleeping? How's the migraine? Hope you're feeling better! Yes, exciting but I'm kinda dreading the laundry 😉 8y
BookishFeminist @Cinfhen Migraine gone, insomnia not! 😒 I am definitely feeling better though so no complaints tonight since I can actually curl up with a book. :) It's never too early to wean them onto doing their own laundry. 😉 It'll be nice to have him home- I hope you guys have a fun time! 8y

Suet624 Some light reading after finishing such an intense book?😳 8y
Cinfhen @Suet624 I'm a glutton for punishment! And I just noticed that most of my November reads are solemn 🙄😕 8y

It's #Recommendsday! This is one of my favorite nonfiction books. It's full of so much history, information, and WTF moments, your brain will spin in your skull.

Did you know the actor who played the cook on Bonanza was shot during an air hijacking attempt??? This is one of the zillion facts I learned -and repeated to everyone around me. SO MUCH INFORMATION.

This book is the best HBO/Netflix/Showtime/Hulu series that hasn't been made. Yet.

JennaRoot I liked this one too! Good timing with all of the DB Cooper stuff resurfacing again 8y
Cinfhen This one has been on my TBR list for a long time...I need to get to it quickly😀 8y
passingfair I LOVED this book! I remember calling my mother after reading this and being all 'how dare you never tell me there was an airplane hijacking epidemic!!' And she was like '..... Sorry?' 8y
Procrastireader Hop Sing was in a hijacking?!? (Mind. Blown.). ( and why is that not an emoji?) 8y

Enjoying this. Had no idea the extent of skyjacking in history. Feels like I'm reading a dispatch from a strange timeline.
