These Silent Woods: A Novel | Kimi Cunningham Grant
53 posts | 61 read | 57 to read
A father and daughter living in the remote Appalachian mountains must reckon with the ghosts of their past in Kimi Cunningham Grant's These Silent Woods, a mesmerizing novel of suspense. No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabins shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But shes starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for herand hes still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there. The only people who know they exist are a mysterious local hermit named Scotland, and Cooper's old friend, Jake, who visits each winter to bring them food and supplies. But this year, Jake doesn't show up, setting off an irreversible chain of events that reveals just how precarious their situation really is. Suddenly, the boundaries of their safe haven have blurredand when a stranger wanders into their woods, Finchs growing obsession with her could put them all in danger. After a shocking disappearance threatens to upend the only life Finch has ever known, Cooper is forced to decide whether to keep hidingor finally face the sins of his past. Vividly atmospheric and masterfully tense, These Silent Woods is a poignant story of survival, sacrifice, and how far a father will go when faced with losing it all.

Pickpick

This book was a pick, but a low one, for me. The story of a father and his daughter living in the deep woods for years, a place to hide from an event in the past, should have been in my wheelhouse. It‘s not a mystery, it‘s not a thriller, it felt like an expanded short story. And I had a few questions at the end. 🤷🏻‍♀️ With this book, I completed my reading goal for the year. I had kept the goal low, hoping I‘d read my New Yorkers. I did not.

kspenmoll New Yorkers are so dense-I have a pile too.!!! Congratulations on meeting your goal early! You can only go higher from here! (edited) 2mo
Suet624 @kspenmoll I want to support The New Yorker - I love what they publish - but I seem to have a thing about actually reading them! None of my tricks seem to be working on how to drop a book and pick up the magazine. :) (edited) 2mo
Amiable @kspenmoll Ha ha, I read your comment quickly and thought you were referring to actual New Yorkers! 😂Because the roads in New England get so crowded with leaf-peepers this time of year. 😄 2mo

Anna40 I usually read Briefly noted and the short story, only rarely an article but the one on Vance in the latest issue is really good. 2mo
Suet624 @Anna40 that‘s an interesting approach. I definitely need to do something like that. It‘s just that everything in that magazine ends up being so interesting! I admire David Remnick so much for his belief in printing articles that require lots of lawyers to vet the story. Like Ronan farrow‘s article about Harvey Weinstein. So I will subscribe just to support Remnick. 💕 2mo
BarbaraBB I am sorry you didn‘t like it as much as I expected you to. Congrats of the 75 (!) books, too bad for your New Yorkers 😉😘 2mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I always feel a bit guilty when I recommend a book and you don‘t like it as much as I did. 😊. No worries. I think I was still recovering from the book I‘d read before. 2mo
Anna40 I agree. But the articles are so long, often I don‘t have the patience. But I guess I should. I also listen to their podcast Writer‘s voice and Fiction if I‘m too lazy to read 😊 2mo

(After pulling all the plants from the flower boxes I decided to leave this one in. Seems like the frost didn‘t damage it!) Just finished this one this morning - recommended and gifted to me by @BarbaraBB - thank you! 😘

Cooper and his daughter Finch have been living in a remote Appalachian cabin for years, when a series of events threaten to shatter their careful sheltered existence.

Loved both Cooper and Finch (and even Scotland!). I have a question, though, for those who have read it already, in spoilers below.

squirrelbrain How did Finch get to meet her grandparents without Cooper getting into trouble? I thought also that they‘d been told she was killed by Scotland? Or am I missing something? 2mo
jhod It's the tiny book! 2mo
Suet624 @squirrelbrain I just finished and I have questions too. Maybe Marie brokered an agreement with them? I wondered why Finch never saw Scotland again. Wouldn‘t he have gone to jail and couldn‘t she visit?? 2mo

While searching for my next audiobook, I came across this on my wishlist. The setting of a father and daughter living in the woods with no electricity and no connection to the outside world because a secret is being held sounded quite intriguing.

Marketing this one as a suspense/thriller really does it a disservice. For the most part, it is a much quieter book than that. About a man trying to navigate a life for and with his daughter, while hiding from the world. Don't read it for a shocking, twisty, suspenseful story. Read it for the story of a father who, above all else, loves his daughter and will do anything for her. And for an ending that will move you to tears.

squirrelbrain Ooh, @BarbaraBB just sent me this and now I‘m looking forward to it even more! 3mo
BarbaraBB Great review! I loved this one so much and you are right, calling it a thriller doesn‘t do it justice. Enjoy, Helen! @squirrelbrain 3mo
Mpcacher I read this one three years ago and I still remember it, which is saying something for me as regular thrillers are often entertaining but not always memorable. The memorable part is because it was so much more than a thriller. 3mo

A novel about sacrifice and risking everything for the ones you love. A remote Appalachian setting will always be a way to entice me to pick up a book, and this one delivered on that! However, the best part about this book is the ending.

I loved this book, all of it. Cooper has been fleeing from his past and is raising 8 year old daughter Finch in the remote Appalachian woods. Once a year a friend brings supplies and there‘s a hermit neighbour somewhere nearby but mostly they are by themselves. Until the moment the books starts.
What a loving and atmospheric read and that perfect ending… tears in my eyes. Loved it. Thanks for bringing it to my radar, Meg 🩶

Cooper & Finch live in a remote cabin with very little contact with the outside world. Jake visits 1X a year & there‘s a hermit named Scotland.

C&F have been living like this for 8 years when Jake doesn‘t show up. Their world unravels from there.

Cooper‘s story about what happened 8 years ago slowly reveals what lengths a dad will go to do not to be separated from his baby girl.

SO GOOD! Awesome ending!

marleed I by chance audio‘d this book earlier this year. Bronson Pinchot was the narrator. He was excellent so I googled for other books he might have narrated, 100s of them! I had to laugh because I several narrators so often read the books I listen too, and Bronson wasn‘t among them. Made me realize I may be more genre specific than I profess not to be! 1y
Twainy @marleed I can‘t remember what my first Pinchot book was … but he‘s a solid narrator. He‘s in my top ten or twenty narrators! He usually adds something to the written word. 😁 1y

This was so good. A slow burn, which usuallly means boring, but it was hard to put down. It gave me some Cormac McCarthy‘s The Road vibes. Not as dark, but with all the atmosphere and suspense. How far will a father go when faced with losing it all?” Bring tissues.

I went into this with the understanding that I was reading a thriller. It definitely was not a thriller or horror. It was a captivating story of a father and daughter living in isolation in hiding. Definitely a slow burn but I couldn‘t put it down. It left me in tears because things/people are not always as they seem. Definite recommendation. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a pick with reservations. As others have noted, this is badly marketed as a thriller. It is not a fast-paced thrill ride. It relies heavily on coincidence that wasn‘t wholly believable, and I kept waiting for a shocking twist that never came. There is building tension throughout, but it‘s quiet and sneaky. I did enjoy it, but had I not already tempered my expectations based on other reviews, I might not have.

When @Megabooks noted this mystery brought a tear to her eye, I had to find out for myself. With the help of Libby, the audiobook was soon at hand (‘er ear). So there I was pushing my 7-mo old grandson down the street with tears rolling down my eyes! Also this is superbly narrated by Bronson Pinchot (blast from the past) and I could almost hear the silence in the woods. ↓

marleed This month I made a concerted effort to concentrate on books by black authors (or celebrating black stories) that were unread on my shelves. I veered from my concentration three times, and interestingly all three spoke to PTSD. This one was fiction and perhaps not entirely realistic, but it still pulled at my heart. 2y

marleed @jlhammar Oh I‘ll look this book up. Funny, I thought Bronson did such a good job narrating that I googled to see if he narrated anything else. Well, yes - over 100 books! That really got me thinking about what I listen too because the prolific voices I know are Cassandra Campbell, Julia Whalen, Bahni Turbin, and Scott Brick. Perhaps I need to expand my audiobook narrators! 2y

What is up with me getting emotional and crying at the end of a thriller? But this novel‘s ending was just perfect!

After a tragic accident, Cooper and his daughter, Finch, have to hide in an army buddy‘s cabin. They live in isolation except for their neighbor, Scotland. Cooper can‘t quite trust him or anyone else, though. When a girl stumbles into their woods, Cooper is afraid more will follow, but Finch is entranced. Will their cover be blown?

I went into this one blind and was pleasantly entertained. It did not go where I thought it would, so that‘s a plus. There is also a mounting tension throughout which feels quite menacing, but not of the killer thriller type. Rather it stems from domestic & personal conflict. Note, it is unrealistic in a couple of respects so the reader has to suspend disbelief.

The audio narrator has a very soothing voice. 😌

⭐️⭐️ I hate when books are mis-marketed. This is not a thriller. If I‘d been anticipating a slow burn, I could‘ve gone in with proper expectations which might‘ve helped … also, maybe not. I hated this story. It was boring, unbelievable, and too tidy. Nothing/nothing/nothing/rush/end. And gag me with that ridiculous epilogue. Made for a decent #bookclub discussion, though, so there‘s that. #thankunext

These Silent woods is a pungent, page-turning story of the length a father will go to protect his child.

The characters are crafted three dimensionally—they are relatable, have significant purpose to the story.

While the novel was a full, satisfying story, I was curious to see more about the mysterious girl with the camera.

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant is a captivating story of sacrifice, protection, and grace.

I had expected this to be a thriller, but I would probably describe this more as a slowburn mystery. Its a quiet book very atmospheric and the first audio book to actually make me ugly cry. While most of the book seems calm, and characters are pretty soft, there is just an air of tension that runs through it. Everything seems alright, but something is about to go down. ⬇️

Tera66 In every little thing that happened I was seeing bloodthirsty rogue 🐻, hatchet murders, and boogeyman hiding everywhere. But I didn't expect the ending or that it would make me back my eyes out. I really like this one, four 🌟 3y

This was slow for me in the beginning, but it turned out to be a moving and melancholic tale about the power of grace and love. This book was marketed wrong, it was suppose to be a Thriller, but it's far from it. I think the author thought if they lived off the land in the woods, it would give a scary vibe. But I thought it gave off a very cozy and peaceful vibe. There wasn't any plot twists or anything, just following their lives. I struggled between a 3 or4 rating because I did end up enjoying it. But settled on 3.5 because I was kept waiting for a twist that never came.

Not a fan of this at all. If I wanted to be preached at, I would have picked up a Christian book. Instead, I was blindsided by what I thought was a thriller. The author actually has a character who cheated on his wife and was "very poisonous" because he was an "outspoken atheist." Barf. The story itself was super boring, unbelievable, and unoriginal. I wish I could get back my hours that I wasted on this drivel.

It has been a long time since I read a book like THESE SILENT WOODS by Kimi Cunningham Grant: startling plot twists, riveting, unexpected, tender and heartrending. Not a word is wasted in this larger-than-life story of a father and a daughter who must do everything in their own terms to live through life against all odds, against a horrible past and a bleak future. Brimming with wisdom about the human condition, Ms. Grant is setting the bar 👇

thevagabondlawyer too high and redefining what storytelling is all about. In the literary heights reminiscent of what I had felt reading The Kite Runner, A Little Life, A Thousand Splendin Suns, These Silent Woods is an astonishing accomplishment. I thought my tears were dried up already reading three amazing memoirs, but what the hell, this book wrecked me and had me in messy tears, in the best possible way. FIVE FREAKIN STARS 🌟 🌟🌟 🌟🌟 3y

This book is beautiful, poignant, and a tad cautious. It was also definitely what you would call a slow burn. I‘m sure that many will love this story because of all these things. I, unfortunately, didn‘t love it but I did really, really like it. If I had to pinpoint why I would have to say that I felt like the entire story was eluding to something bigger than what is was and I think it left me feeling underwhelmed.

Book 151

These Silent Woods is a mild thriller about a man and his daughter who live in a cabin in the woods in order to avoid some unknown danger. It's a story that's been told, with an underwhelming backstory. It was okay but nothing special. ⭐⭐⭐

Exactly the book that I needed in my life right now. Rarely do books live up to my hopes, but this one truly did. It was atmospheric, cozy & emotional. I could feel the characters' happiness, grief, peace & anxiety. It's December and I've finally found my favorite read this year.

I didn't feel like the book quite lived up to the hype of the publisher description. Nonetheless, this was a slightly more interesting than average read. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#these-silent-woods

This was such a good book. Very tender and heartwarming. I did not think it was at all a thriller. A bit of a tense in some parts book but not a thriller. It has some mystery to it but I would not even call it a mystery. It was just a very good general fiction book about a father and daughter. One that may stick with you. Touch your heart.
THE THING ABOUT GRACE IS THAT YOU DON'T DESERVE IT. YOU CAN'T EVEN EARN IT. YOU CAN ONLY ACCEPT IT. OR NOT.

This book is about the love between a father, Cooper, and his daughter, Finch, whom we meet when she is eight-years-old. They are living in a remote cabin, off the grid and hidden away from society. When their peaceful existence comes under threat, Cooper must make difficult choices. Finch reminded me of Scout from “To Kill a Mockingbird“ and I loved her character. I really enjoyed this book and gave it 4/5 stars.

Oh, I absolutely loved this novel!! Cooper and his daughter, Finch, have been living in a remote cabin in the woods when one season everything changes as the outside world creeps in. Cooper‘s own past and PTSD play a large role here and I especially love the relationship between father and daughter here. It‘s hard to put down and quite well written! I am looking forward to reading more from this talented author!

This is written in such a compelling way that even the moments not centered in mystery gripped me completely.

The story captures the crippling effects of PTSD incredibly well while skillfully depicting a father‘s overwhelming love for his daughter and sensitively delving into the enormity of grief. It‘s a narrative full of emotion you can feel and it took my breath away.
