The Book of Magic
The Book of Magic | Alice Hoffman
Filled with secrets and splendour and light and dark It casts a spell Matt Haig, author of The Midnight Library The Owens family finally confronts the curse that has marked their family for centuries in the thrilling and unforgettable conclusion to the beloved Practical Magic series The Owens family has been cursed in matters of love for over three-hundred years. In Massachusetts, beloved aunt Jet Owens hears the deathwatch beetle, a signal she has only seven days to live. She has finally discovered the secret to breaking the curse, but is out of time to help. And she is not the only one in danger the curse is already at work. The new Owens generation is unaware of the familys witchcraft lineage and of the curse. But one of the young sisters has fallen in love. After declaring their love for each other, her boyfriend falls into a coma, spurring three generations of Owens women and a long-lost brother to venture back to where it all began and use their gifts to break the curse once and for all. Doing so threatens to destroy everything the family has fought so hard to protect. How much will they give up for the greatest gift of all? PRAISE for ALICE HOFFMAN Beautiful, harrowing, a major contribution to twenty-first century literature Toni Morrison I am still reeling from The Dovekeepers from the history Alice Hoffman illuminates, from the language she uses to bring these women to life. This novel is a testament to the human spirit and to love rising from the ashes of war. But most of all, this novel is one that will never be forgotten by a reader. Jodi Picoult In her remarkable new novel, Alice Hoffman holds a mirror to our ancient past as she explores the contemporary themes of sexual desire, womens solidarity in the face of strife, and the magic thats quietly present in our day-to-day living. Put The Dovekeepers at the pinnacle of Hoffmans extraordinary body of work. I was blown away. Wally Lamb Alice Hoffman takes seemingly ordinary lives and lets us see and feel extraordinary things. Amy Tan Miss Hoffman heals wounds with the gentle touch of an angel Joseph Heller 'Oh, what a book this is! Hoffmans exploration of the world of good and evil, and the constant contest between them, is unflinching; and the humanity she brings to us it is a glorious experience.' Elizabeth Strout

Started this one yesterday! I‘ve got to finish the series 💫💛 🧙‍♀️ 🪄

If you‘ve read this series, which book is your favorite?! I think my favorite is The Rules of Magic! I loved the backstory of Franny, Jet, and Vincent!

Scochrane26 I still have this one to read, but so far, my favorite has also been The Rules of Magic. 2w

I enjoyed this (presumably) final installment of the Practical Magic series, but unevenly so. My deep affection for the elder Owenses — specifically Franny, Jet, and Vincent — is somewhat undermined by my then relative indifference for the youngest generation. Not sure why I couldn‘t seem to care as much for Kylie and Antonia, but it kept me feeling somewhat disconnected for large sections of the story.

Oh no! I didn't enjoy this as much as the others in the series. I think because I love the Owens Women so much and this book was going off on too many tangents telling us the life stories of the men in this book - new characters. And while we already know about the women I was not at all interested in meeting these other characters so in depth. The storyline itself was good and I wanted to know what happened but it took too many tangents.

What a great way to end the series! I really couldn‘t put the book down, and was enthralled by the historical note regarding Amelia Bassano, who I had not heard about, but now want to learn more about! For anyone who has been a fan of these books, hopefully you will enjoy the ending as much as I did, and feel a little more than you did when you started.

I didn't have exorbitantly high hopes since this series has been a mixed bag, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is a long story, but there is a lot at work & each character was given their due. The plot can be a little slow & there is a lot of background setup, but for me it was just an exploration of those things I was fond of in previous books. A rewarding end to the series that left the characters in a place that felt natural & comforting.

12-28-21: My 130th finished book of 2021! This was a wonderful ending to a beautiful series. The Owens family has been cursed in love for more than 300 years but now Jet and Franny and Gillian and Sally will come together with Sally‘s grown daughters, and travel to England to fight the curse that has cost so many lives. It was a perfect ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣3️⃣0️⃣

I finished my chronological read of the Practical Magic series!

While this wasn‘t my favorite of the four books, I still loved every minute of it. I fell in love with all of the Owens witches, one at a time, in the other books, and this book was a heartbreaking, heartwarming, satisfying love-letter of a conclusion. Hoffman‘s writing is gorgeous, as ever.

Bonus: Ehle‘s excellent narration while I was watching her in P&P every night.❤️

I‘m a fan of the series especially the last two, but the finale didn‘t quite work for me 😭 maybe because I had high hopes. I felt the new characters a little underwhelming and the plot dragged on in the middle. Whew, this book made me feel a bit emotional. I got really attached to Franny and Jet and it‘s a bit sad to see this series come to a close. I‘m glad I recently read The Rules of Magic and Magic Lessons last year as this book wouldn‘t make much sense otherwise. There is just a wonderful homecoming about these books with family, doing no harm, love, and the magic we may not be born to, but that we make for ourselves.

This was a nice conclusion to the curse of the Owens family - to undo what was done. I read @Branwen ‘s post noting the author and editors forgetting the manner of death of Michael in Practical Magic - I appreciate that I was prepared for that miss! It‘s definitely a companion to the previous trilogy and doesn‘t really stand alone as it‘s own story. And that‘s completely fine as it‘s not intended to stand alone.

BookwormAHN I just started this book and was wondering if I remembered that wrong 😺 3y
Branwen @BookwormAHN You didn't remember it wrong! They messed up and it drive me crazy for the entirety of the book! 🤣😂 3y

marleed @Branwen It really did help because I was able to let it go knowing you held the frustration :). Maybe @BookwormAHN will agree! 3y
BookwormAHN @Branwen It definitely helped. It drives me nuts when authors change things. 3y
Branwen @BookwormAHN YES! Same! I couldn't get over it with this book! 🤣😂 3y
Branwen @marleed I'm STILL frustrated about it, to be honest! 🤣😂 3y
marleed @Branwen @BookwormAHN If they are aware of this significant oversight, I wonder if they‘ll fix it in subsequent publications. 3y
Branwen @marleed @BookwormAHN I really hope so! 😥 I haven't read about other reviews on goodreads of people complaining about it though! Weird! 🤔 3y
BookwormAHN @Branwen @marleed That's weird. I know people on Goodreads were complaining about some of the changes, mainly the Aunts significant others deaths, that were changed from Practical Magic to Rules of Magic. She seems to default to men being stuck by lightning a lot 😸 3y

Okay, so I don't want to be THAT person..but I can't stop thinking about this.

There is an inconsistency in this new book that is driving me nuts. In the beginning of this book, it's mentioned that Sally's first husband, Michael, was killed by being struck by lightning. Um. That's wrong! In the first Practical Magic he died by being hit by a car driven by drunk teens! (I went back and double checked this to confirm) HOW DID NO ONE CATCH THIS?! 👇

ReadingVampire For real? That's insane! 😮☹ 3y
Branwen (Continued from post) Look, I know this isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things. But I can't possibly be the only one bothered by this? I just feel like it's really lazy writing. When you're banking off the success of previous books in the series, at least make sure you get your facts right! I am a huge Alice Hoffman fan, and I love her books, especially this series! But COME ONE WITH THIS LAZY WRITING! 😓 3y
DaveGreen7777 What if… plot twist, the teens had named the car “Lightning”?! 🤔 3y
See All 20 Comments
Branwen @Puredragonstar Yup! I just went back to check Practical Magic to check and I am just blown away by this error! I'm really loving the book otherwise, but I can't stop thinking about this! 😞 3y
Branwen @DaveGreen7777 AHAHAHAHA! THAT WOULD MAKE DO MUCH MORE SENSE, HONESTLY! 😂🤣👏 3y
ReadingVampire It would completely bother me too!!! That's just crazy! Why not go back and make sure? SMH little facts make consistency of a story. 3y
Branwen @Puredragonstar Exactly! I hate being pulked out of a story by stuff like this! I want to be immersed in the world, not thinking about fact checking! 3y
Ruthiella That would bother me too! Someone should have checked all that for accuracy. 3y
Branwen @Ruthiella Right?! Like, how did they miss this?! 3y
ReadingEnvy Oh no! How did the AUTHOR miss it? Are you liking it otherwise? I have a copy but haven't started yet. 3y
Branwen @ReadingEnvy That's the worst part, I think! That the author missed it! Grrr! Honestly, otherwise it's really good! Other than this flub I'm really enjoying it! 3y
WanderingBookaneer Just out of curiosity: Does he die the same way in both the movie and the book? 3y
StaceGhost Michael definitely died bc of a drunk driver in the book, although two would be admirers of the aunts were both struck by lightning. I also noticed there was a tradition of wearing Maria‘s sapphire but Jet and Franny sold it in Rules of M. I chose to believe they bought it back. Haha I am that person 3y
Branwen @WanderingBookaneer I just looked it up, and in the movie he died from being hit by a truck! 3y
Branwen @StaceGhost Yes! I remember Jet's beau dying from a lightning strike! Which is part of why it was so weird she made that mistake for Michael's death! ARGH! SO frustrating! 😓 I totally forgot about the sapphire! 😲 3y
WanderingBookaneer Ok… Your post just brought to mind the sequel to Jurassic Park, which ended up being a sequel to the Jurassic Park movie and not the Jurassic Park book. 3y
Branwen @WanderingBookaneer Oooh yes! That makes total sense! 3y
Palimpsest @Branwen I just read The Rules of Magic last month and I‘m pretty sure Vincent left the Magus sitting on a bench for someone else to find, but in this book Ian is casually reading it at the house. I just finished this book and still overall loved it despite the mistakes and some repetitive info. I‘ve never read Practical Magic though, I‘ve only watched the movie so I didn‘t catch the wrong death, which seems like a big mistake to make. 😬 3y
Palimpsest And yeah I forgot about the sapphire too until this post. Details like that are important. 3y
Branwen @Palimpsest YES! You are so right! Details like that are super important and it just seems like lazy writing/editing to come across stuff like that! 😔 3y

The Owens family learns that a life well-lived is a life well-loved thus ending the beloved series. Admittedly, the middle of the book dragged for me, but the ending made it all worth it. So, if this happens to you, channel your Energizer 🐰 & keep going. One of the things I love about the series is the feminist overtones, which this 📖 continues. This 📕 also includes a sapphic storyline! 🎉 - 🏳️‍🌈 women can also find love & be magical!
