The Stranger in the Lifeboat
The Stranger in the Lifeboat | Mitch Albom
45 posts | 47 read | 23 to read
What would happen if we called on God for help and God actually appeared? In Mitch Albom's profound new novel of hope and faith, a group of shipwrecked passengers pull a strange man from the sea. He claims to be "the Lord." And he says he can only save them if they all believe in him. Adrift in a raft after a deadly ship explosion, nine people struggle for survival at sea. Three days pass. Short on water, food and hope, they spot a man floating in the waves. They pull him in. "Thank the Lord we found you," a passenger says. "I am the Lord," the man whispers. So begins Mitch Albom's most beguiling and inspiring novel yet. Albom has written of heaven in the celebrated number one bestsellers The Five People You Meet in Heaven and The First Phone Call from Heaven. Now, for the first time in his fiction, he ponders what we would do if, after crying out for divine help, God actually appeared before us? What might the Lord look, sound and act like? In The Stranger in the Lifeboat, Albom keeps us guessing until the end: Is this strange and quiet man really who he claims to be? What actually happened to cause the explosion? Are the survivors already in heaven, or are they in hell? The story is narrated by Benji, one of the passengers, who recounts the events in a notebook that is later discovered--a year later--when the empty life raft washes up on the island of Montserrat. It falls to the island's chief inspector, Jarty LeFleur, a man battling his own demons, to solve the mystery of what really happened. A fast-paced, compelling novel that makes you ponder your deepest beliefs, The Stranger in the Lifeboat suggests that answers to our prayers may be found where we least expect them.

There was a shipwreck. There is a lifeboat. & among 11 survivors there is one claiming to be the Lord. What can one can believe in in awful circumstances?

I think it‘s safe to say, at this point, Albom is not for me anymore. The twists were predictable, the characters were flat, & this felt overly preachy in a way that I learned the exact opposite lesson Albom would have wanted. If this wasn‘t a book club book, I would have bailed.🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

I listened to the audiobook.

Nine people are in a lifeboat after surviving an explosion on a yacht. They are a mixed bag of people, all successful in their careers, except for one. They pull a man out of the water only to be spiritually tested. The man tells them that he can save them, but only if they believe in God. As each of the nine wrestle with their selves, who will believe and end up living?

😊 Happy Reading 😊

Intriguing and suspenseful. I enjoyed how the characters pulled at my heart strings. I appreciate the message Mitch concludes with. As expected from the book description, there is a significant God presence in the book as the survivors in the lifeboat debate their beliefs. I‘m not a religious person as I prefer Eastern philosophy and it did not hinder my ability to become fully engrossed in the story.

After reading @suvata ‘s review, I happened to see this at the library. Her enthusiasm inspired me. Albom is generally hit or miss for me and over time I‘ve tended to stay away. However, I really enjoyed this one. The structure and pace of the story was great. A boat blows up, there are 11 survivors in a life raft. One of them says they are the Lord. Of course it‘s about faith because that‘s Albom‘s jam, but I thought the story was well done.

suvata I‘m so happy to hear that you liked it. I‘m glad you gave it a try. 7mo

• 5 Stars -- Unforgettable!

Adrift in a raft after a deadly ship explosion, ten people struggle for survival at sea. Three days pass. Short on water, food and hope, they spot a man floating in the waves. They pull him in.

"Thank the Lord we found you," a passenger says.

"I am the Lord," the man whispers.

So begins Mitch Albom's most beguiling novel yet.

I‘m always up for a good conspiracy theory. Titanic or Olympic almost had me believing that these two ships were swapped. Scratch that. I bought it hook, line, and sinker. Either way, get me onto a lifeboat ASAP which brings me to The Stranger in the Lifeboat by fellow-Detroiter, Mitch Albom.

As much as I love Albom's books, this one was quite disappointing. It read like a poor man's Life of Pi.

5⭐️ I was behind on posting my last two reads because I had to finish this one first. This is the first book I‘ve ever read by this author, but I‘ll tell you now, it will not be my last. It was such a well written, intriguing, heart breaking, creative piece of literature. It speaks of hope, and has the ability to restore faith. I was not looking for this book, but I think it founded me when I needed it most.

Anyone ever notice how many song are referenced in books? For example, the listed book just mentioned John B by The Beach Boys. I am thinking of making a playlist… Anyone have suggestions on its name?

BookwormAHN Check out Stephen King's 11/22/63 has its own Playlist 1y

It‘s been a minute since I posted anything, but I‘m just starting this book today and I‘m super excited about it. I‘ve heard really good things. I haven‘t read much in the last three months due to some really big stressors. I will be posting the books I have read (coughs 2 under breath) probably sometime tonight. I‘m looking forward to reconnecting with this community and decreasing stress and increasing joy by reading again.

There‘s probably a research paper in the theology of Mitch Albom‘s books. They always make me think about what I would do, say, or believe. This one is no different. Bought on a whim and started waiting for friends. Shorter book that makes you think.

A Christmas present. A quick read with a good message, though it may not strike a cord for all, including myself at times. We do need to get over our disappointments and get down to the business of living - really living - our lives, not just breathing through them. Appreciate the New Year we have been given and MAKE it a good one….!

I first read Mitch Albom in college and then devoured all of his books, it‘s been more than 10 years and I found him again. This was a strange story of the sinking of a ship and survival. The story is so interesting, I could not put it down. I enjoyed the characters and the unexpected ending. All of us require faith whether we believe or not in a higher power and this book makes you really think about your own life, if you allow. Book #80 in 2021

What would you do if you asked God for help and he actually appeared? Would you recognize him? Would you believe he was who he said? Would you be happy, embarrassed, ashamed, terrified? What would you do if you called and he answered?

Started this last night and I all ready know it‘s a winner!!!

What if you call out for the Lord and he actually appears before you? Days after billionaire Jason Lambert‘s luxury yacht Galaxy suddenly sinks in the North Atlantic with many illustrious passengers aboard, a few survivors float in a life raft.

The story reminded me greatly of THE LIFE OF PI, the character being through into a sea of doubt. That the Lord has appeared to your unanswered calls - even if some answers are no. That struck the hardest, I think. The twists give a new meaning at every revelation. Good book to read right now

As I‘ve said about every other Albom novel, go read this book. It didn‘t replace my favorite Alboms, but still worthy of 5 stars. (Pictured alongside my library haul.)

Wow. I just read this cover to cover and it was a beautiful whirlwind.
I heard Albom give a virtual book talk last week and it was so moving, really more like a class in religion, philosophy, and spirituality than a book talk. He is such a unique writer.
Though this story is brief, it is packed with surprises and overflowing with “food for thought.”

As usual, Albom's writing is fantastic. When I pick up one of his books I know I wont be disappointed. I really liked this one as it had a bit of mystery to it and I was dying to find out the ending. Strangers find themselves in a lifeboat after The Galaxy yacht explodes. The story follows along their journey as you learn their back stories.

Mitch Albom has once again written a short, entertaining, spiritual and thought provoking novel. I will be pondering this one for a while. It would be a great choice for book clubs as It left me wanting to talk about it. I gave it 4/5 stars.
