Tenth Girl | Sara Faring
A haunted Argentinian mansion.A family curse.A twist you'll never see coming.Welcome to Vaccaro School. Simmering in Patagonian myth, Sara Faring's The Tenth Girl is a gothic psychological thriller with a haunting twist. At the very southern tip of South America looms an isolated finishing school. Legend has it that the land will curse those who settle there. But for Mavi--a bold Buenos Aires native fleeing the military regime that took her mother--it offers an escape to a new life as a young teacher to Argentina's elite girls. Mavi tries to embrace the strangeness of the imposing house--despite warnings not to roam at night, threats from an enigmatic young man, and rumors of mysterious Others. But one of Mavi's ten students is missing, and when students and teachers alike begin to behave as if possessed, the forces haunting this unholy cliff will no longer be ignored... and one of these spirits holds a secret that could unravel Mavi's existence. An Imprint Book Layered and challenging, and full to bursting with intelligence, while at the same time exuberantly bizarre, like it's having the best time on its own and daring you to join in.--Rory Power, New York Times bestselling author of Wilder GirlsFaring's exquisite prose weaves a tale that is both seductively eerie and wildly original. I've never read anything like it.--April Genevieve Tucholke, author of The Boneless Mercies

July book 2! Read for bookclub and I'm kind of excited for the discussion bc I fully expect this novel to be polarizing thanks to the twist at ~75% through the book. On its surface, it's a Gothic ghost story set in an 1970s Argentinian, isolated, girls' boarding school. For me, the twist made the book more interesting... At first. But then plot points and other aspects also made less sense, so, it's a so-so for me.

Larkken This was also #doublespin pick for July 👍🏻 3y

Finished first book for May goals #BFC21 @wanderinglynn and for #20in4 @Andrew65

This started out interesting and creepy but became repetitive (find the tenth girl, get lost in house, get told to ignore the illness and odd things happening, repeat). The ending is interesting but poorly executed, didn't come together well. It has promise and if it were a rough draft it could be fixed, but this is the final product, so I am panning it.

Andrew65 Shame the book wasn‘t better but well done 👏👏👏 4y

This book has some VERY anti-native writing in it and I just... can‘t. Yes, she‘s Argentinan but she‘s not native. Also she named the area tribe Mapuche when there‘s an actual large group of South American native people called the Zapuche. *side eye for days*

MIND BLOWN!! I‘m so not quite sure what just happened! I enjoyed this story and then the plot twist climax was OMG! I was not expecting that ending. As I think back through the story, I see so many clues that connect to the ending. This was such fresh writing that I‘m excited to see more from the author. Another book finished for #Scarathlon2020 and #Screamathon.

I had higher expectations for this one based on the description, but it didn't quite live up to them. The story has a haunted house, ghosts, secrets from the past, and a vast array of characters. However, the explanations for why things were happening were nonexistent and I ended up more confused when I finished than when I started.

Picture was from The Reading Rush photo challenge a book with your pet.

This book... this damn book was terrible and I am so irritated about it. The big draw for this is that it has a plot twist you'll never see coming..if you own the hardcover version of this damn book don't take the dust jacket off because there is an imprinting on the hardcover that gives away the frankly terrible plot twist but still it ruined any interest I had in the book.

🎧 Well. Meh. I‘m not sure what else I can say without giving too much away. Starts out with a young teacher (Mavi) escaping to a haunted boarding school. She meets a questionable romantic interest (Angel). And the story unfolds. Not for the younger YA audience! There‘s a significant trigger. It‘s a really interesting premise with plenty of foreshadowing for a very select audience ... this could have been a better book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3

As Randy Jackson would say: “Yeah, that‘s gonna be a no from me, dawg.”

I went into this knowing it was getting very polarizing reviews and that there was a bogus twist. But wow. I didn‘t realize it was going to be BOGUS BOGUS.

This didn‘t work for me. Even before the twist. It was far too long and nothing really happens and I just didn‘t care about these bland characters.

Then the twist just made it even worse. Completely tragic.

This book had some very polarizing reviews on goodreads and the premise really sucked me in. I just love a big haunted house. Right away, I figured out this wasn‘t going to be a typical gothic tale. It definitely was thought provoking with a very interesting twist. It definitely brought up some ethical discussion in my mind. While I can see it not being for everyone, I thought it was great.

Overall, I liked this book a lot. I like how Faring subverts the reader‘s expectations, but I also can see how the big twists will turn off some readers. Writers make an unspoken promise to the reader with each story, and there‘s a fine line between a great plot twist and failing to deliver on the original promise. My biggest sticking point is the POV of Angel, because I feel the emotional cues aren‘t authentic given the twist later in the book.

I found this YA paranormal thriller to be a painfully slow, confusing novel. I finished my library ebook hours before it was due; it shouldn‘t take me 21 days to get through a thriller. There were a few vaguely creepy parts, but nothing was all that scary, and I have a low threshold for scary things. The “twist” didn‘t make sense at all, and felt completely out of place. That type of twist wasn‘t earned and cheapened the rest of the book.

Merethebookgal (This next thought is kinda spoilery but not actually the twist) I feel like the twist was just like an updated version of “it was all a dream.” Anyway, I only finished it because it‘s a book club book, but if I‘d had my way, I would have DNF‘d this pretty early on. It‘s too bad, really, because the premise sounded cool. (edited) 5y

Okay, wow, I don‘t even know where to begin with this book. This is perfect for fans of Miss Peregrine‘s Home for Peculiar Children and Ready Player One (I know, weird combo, but trust me), and the best way to read it is without knowing anything going in. I really enjoyed this, but Goodreads helped me see some issues I hadn‘t thought of before. Definitely on the older side of YA, and it needs some content warnings. Read with care.

jmtrivera Would you say it's scary? I can't do horror at ALL, but our book club will be reading it. I'm worried I won't be able to handle it. 5y
cleoh @jmtrivera I found it more unsettling than downright scary and I don‘t know what else I can say without spoilers. I think the world building relies on setting an uncomfortable/unsettling tone, but once the story picks up and is less focused on the world, I didn‘t find it scary at all. Does that make sense? I don‘t want to give anything away 😂 5y
jmtrivera @cleoh That does make sense. How long does it take for it to pick up and be less scary? 5y

I‘m kind of between so-so and pan for this one. The book starts off great and I think Faring writes really well. The setting of a creepy boarding school isolated at the tip of Argentina is perfect. Mavi is on the run and takes the job as English teacher. It‘s really hard to talk about the plot without spoilers. The story is gothic and creepy, and then the twist(?) or big reveal(?) happens and I almost quit. I was confused, but plugged on. ⬇️

Bookzombie I‘m not completely sure I got it all. Maybe I read it too fast. 🤷🏼‍♀️ In the end, I wanted my 458 pages of time back. #screamathon 5y

Undoubtedly, an intriguing book. I definitely haven't read anything else like it. There's a certain genius to it, but it's confusing as it doesn't fit into the box of any genre. This creepy story will probably reverberate around my head for awhile. I thought I had a pretty good handle on it & then around the last hundred pages it took a crazy, unexpected turn. You'll just have to read it yourself to find out what I mean.

So, this is a very weird book. It‘s essentially two books in one (so far). The first storyline tracks a young woman in 1978 on the run from people who want to kill her and posing as a teacher in a remote and exclusive school in the southernmost portion of South America. The second storyline is a ghost from the present who has been sent back to 1978 to haunt that same school. I like the former storyline, not sold on the second one yet.

This is a solid book to read for Halloween month. Mavi and Angel are interesting and complex and I did not see that plot twist coming!

Just a note on the YA rating. There is a lot of pretty intense violence and cruelty and profanity that needs to be considered when offering this book as YA. The writing also suggests an older reader as well. Perhaps New Adult would be better.

It‘s October! It‘s spooky book season! And this ain‘t it! I want ghost, I want monsters, I want horror and weird, and I thought the synopsis said it had all that but it was wrong! Instead it had a weird twist that I hated. By page 300 I was skimming the dialogue till the last 2 chapters because I no longer cared, I couldn‘t stay invested. The nature of this book will make it very polarizing, you either love it or hate it and sadly I hated it.

I selected the ARC from Netgalley bc the description was simply fascinating! Girls at an isolated school where all is not as it seems + creepy folklore should've been a win, but it just failed for me. This is the kind of story where the plot is turned on its head after you've read 80% of the novel &, sadly, the big surprise is just a confusing dud. Pass. Pass. Pass.
