A Lady's Guide to Mischief and Mayhem
A Lady's Guide to Mischief and Mayhem | Manda Collins
25 posts | 24 read | 33 to read
An intrepid female reporter matches wits with a serious, sexy detective in award-winning author Manda Collins' fun and flirty historical rom-com, perfect for readers of Evie Dunmore, Julia Quinn, and Tessa Dare! England, 1865: As one of England's most notorious newspaper columnists, Lady Katherine Bascomb believes knowledge is power. And she's determined to inform and educate the ladies of London on the nefarious - and deadly - criminals who are praying on the fairer sex. But when her reporting leads to the arrest of a notorious killer, Katherine flees to a country house party to escape her newfound notoriety - only to witness a murder on her very first night! And when the lead detective accuses Katherine of inflaming - rather than informing - the public with her column, she vows to prove him wrong. Detective Inspector Andrew Eversham's refusal to compromise his investigations nearly cost him his own career, and he blames Katherine. When he discovers she's the key witness in a new crime, he's determined to prevent the beautiful widow from once again wreaking havoc on his case. Yet as Katherine proves surprisingly insightful and Andrew impresses Katherine with his lethal competency, both are forced to admit the fire between them is more flirtatious than furious. But to explore the passion between them, they'll need to catch a killer . . . 'Manda Collins heats up the ballroom and writes romance to melt even the frostiest duke's heart' Tessa Dare, New York Times bestselling author

Ditched a work meeting for a coffee and some reading which seems fitting given the title.

This was fun to read! It‘s historical romance detective fiction 🤣 the story reminded me of the tv show ⬆️ and the League of Extraordinary Women book series.

I really enjoyed this mystery/romance. Lady Katherine is a feminist who runs a newspaper, & Eversham is a detective with Scotland Yard. They get together pretty quickly while investigating a serial killer case. Fun, light read. If you don‘t enjoy romance, you prob won‘t like this one. #scarathlon #teamslaughter @Clwojick 16 pts

A fun, easy breezy don‘t take seriously romp of mystery and romance. #lmpbc

mabell I just found this one secondhand a few weeks ago! 4y
Chrissyreadit @mabell there are some plot holes. If you do not take it too seriously it‘s a fun read! Hope you like it too! 4y
mabell Realistically, I‘m not sure when I will read it, but it‘s a cute cover! 😆 4y

Sarah it‘s here! Came Friday- but my weekend was rough and I just realized it was left for me to open. #lmpbc

TheAromaofBooks LOL looks like the book's journey was a little rough, too - although not as bad as the one I got with an actual tire track on it 😂 Glad it arrived safely & hope things are better today!!! 4y

This was a fun & fluffy #LMPBC read. There were a few aspects of the mystery part that left me feeling a little confused, but it's a book you read in the spirit it was written lol A soft pick.

This ended up being a busy/productive weekend so I only got through 525/700pg goal for the #AnyWayYouReadathon but we made lots of house-project progress so I'm pretty content!!

CoverToCoverGirl I just picked this one up from the newest audible 2 for 1 sale. It sounded fun and it‘s read by Mary Jane Wells. She an amazing narrator. I hope I like it. 🙂 4y

Chrissyreadit Awesome! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @CoverToCoverGirl - it didn't make me want to rush out and read the sequel, but it was a fun way to while a way a couple of hours!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @kimmypete1 - We've been remodeling this house since 2014 (off and on) & this is the last BIG PUSH so... some weekend we just look at each & are like “nah“ & slack off but now that the weather is getting nicer (despite the fact that it's indoor work...) we find ourselves more inspired to actually crack down & move forward!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp @Chrissyreadit - Chrissy, I'll probably mail this on Monday, which is my next day off. I'll try to remember to actually let you know it's coming this time 😂 4y
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks Im not worried. I‘m still struggling with reading this month. I need some speed reading time. 4y

The murder at the center of this story is easily solvable. It‘s more a romance novel than anything else...but that‘s honestly the way I like my mysteries. 😅 Perfect for Deanna Raybourn fans.

Sexy, witty, & fast-paced.

I‘m thrilled that there will be a companion novel starring Lady Katherine‘s BFF, Caro, because I love that she‘s an eccentric rebel who flouts social conventions but also just openly & unabashedly loves love. 💖 Me too, Caro.

Suuuuuper busy day so a little late posting my goals, but I'm hoping to read 700 pages for the #AnyWayYouReadathon !!! I'm starting with the tagged book, which is for #LMPBC - pretty entertaining so far!!

kimmypete1 Thanks for joining! Hope you have a wonderful weekend reading! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @kimmypete1 - Thanks!!! It always depends on how ambitious we get about other projects. The constant battle between productivity & vegging out 😂 I got the grass mowed yesterday after work, so that deserves some bonus Saturday relaxation, right?? 😁 4y

This book wasn‘t as good as I wanted it to be. I‘ve definitely read better historical romance/mystery series. However, this was still a fun read and I‘m glad I read it. I don‘t want to say too much since it‘s my #LMPBC book.

This was a recommendation from #GetTBR from Book Riot.

TheAromaofBooks It does sound fun & I'm excited because I get it next!! 😁 4y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks I mailed this out to you today! 4y

Hey ladies! Here are some romance options for #LMPBC #GroupR

The first 4 I own, the last 2 I do not. My first choice would be the tagged. It‘s billed as a mystery/rom-com. The others are typical historical romance, a f/f romance and a southern magical realism, but is tagged as having romance.

Hallie - I tried to not pick what you already marked as read on GR 😂

They will all be tagged below. 💚

Chrissyreadit A lady‘s guide to mischief and mayhem is my first pick, south of the buttonwood tree my second and then any of the others. 4y
hes7 I‘ve read A Lady‘s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem. 😬😂 But I was kinda distracted when I listened to it, so I wouldn‘t mind rereading it (with my eyes). The other choices look good, too, though! 4y
TheAromaofBooks The Mischief & Mayhem one sounds fun & I'm with @Chrissyreadit - I think the Buttonwood Tree would be my second pick even though it's not technically romance haha @hes7 please stop reading so much 😂 4y

Bought a bunch of business books at my indie. So of course I also had to get a fun book for myself.

Hopefully I‘ll get to read at least one of these in the next 2 weeks before I start!

Bailedbailed

I think I‘m going to have to temporarily (or maybe permanently 😬) bail on this. I‘m not sure if I‘m just not in the mood for this type of story or if it‘s just not piquing my interest, but I‘m 33% through with it and I‘m struggling to keep reading

The author's bio says two of her influences are Nancy Drew and Jane Austen, and that's totally the vibe of this historical romance mystery. I loved Kate's empowered widowhood reporter life, and she had great bantery chemistry with Andrew, the lead detective. The romance aspect is much better done than the mystery, which was a little clunky tbh, but overall it was a fun time.

JulietReads Love the title. 😆 4y

Got my next round of picks from #GetTBR from @bookriot

I hadn‘t heard of the tagged book. The cover of Ring Shot looks familiar but I‘ve never looked up reading it. I really liked Witchmark, so I‘m looking forward to The Midnight Bargain.

I‘m really excited for this round of books!

CaraTK @Laughterhp Ring Shout novella is amazing. The author has a novel coming out next year called Master of Djinn and I‘m really excited for it! 4y
Laughterhp @CaraTK Oh awesome! That‘s good to know! 4y
eanderson Good news on the book I sent you, it‘s in MA so it‘s getting close! 4y
Laughterhp @eanderson Oh that‘s great to hear! I‘ll keep an eye out for it and let you know when I get it! 4y

A lovely cozy Victorian mystery/romance with a feminist “stay sexy and don‘t get murdered” bent.

Kate is a widowed Lady and a newspaperwoman. She wrotes column about a serial killer and how the police are fumbling the case without thinking through the ramifications of what she published. Because of her story an innocent man is arrested and Andrew, an honest detective, is demoted. (Cort. ⬇️)

CoffeeK8 Kate leave for the country but stumbles across another murder, and Andrew is sent out to investigate. Sparks fly and clues are uncovered. 4y

I was highly anticipating this book and I'm so happy it lives up to it. I thought #mandacollins really balanced out the romance and the mystery really well. It's been awhile since I've read a good historical mystery. This one checks all the boxes. #mystery #historicalromance
