Crackin' read!
Not a successful novel in my opinion. I don't think the author could make up her mind whether she was writing a mystery, a country town slice of life or a sexual awakening story. I didn't like the switches from first person to third person narrative and the solution to the mystery involved too much secret keeping for insufficient reason, but my main problem with it was that it was all very dull. #ozfiction
Set in a small country, life is quiet until two residents go missing within the space of a week. How the town copes and mystery unfolds is told from the point of view of seventeen year old Jean. I quite liked the story and way it was told, though there was a bit of teenage angst.
I did enjoy this book but not as much as her second novel, which I‘m hoping means her books just keep getting better! I liked her portrayal of a small country town and the mystery kept me hooked but I just didn‘t love it. I don‘t regret reading it though and will definitely read more of her books....when she writes them 😀
I recently read Holly Throsby‘s second novel ‘Cedar Valley‘ which I really enjoyed. It prompted me to reserve this, her first novel, from the library. The setting is a country town not far from town in the second novel and some of the characters overlap which is great.
Day 24| #ReadingResolutions
1992. A small town. 2 people vanish. Secrets. What more could I ask from a #beachread #tbr
A quirky small town Australian mystery made all the more interesting by the voice of 17 year old Jean as she narrates the puzzling and distressing events from Goodwood in the 1992. I also appreciated the flashbacks in my own small town Australian childhood.
My secret power is the ability to read in the car. This comes in handy during the seven hour drive home from our beach holiday. This is another #aussieauthor and one I should have got to sooner. I'm hooked, even reading while stopped at a park for lunch.
I can't say I loved this - I had trouble remembering who all the characters were, and, along with the switching POV and perspective, I found this a bit distracting and just wasn't engaged. I do think some people will love it though.
Finished this today, just in time for the #Aprilbookshowers #ruralsetting prompt.
I really enjoyed it. It was a light book about some dark subject matter (if that makes sense). Very Aussie and I wonder how Littens from other parts of the world might find it?
I keep reading about Jean's "brown toast" for breakfast and had to get me some this fine morning ?.
#currentread Hubby's back at work. Kids are temporarily occupied. So it's tea, a biccie and a little Goodwood for me 😁.
This is going to (unexpectedly) be one of my favourite books of the year.
It's quiet, ostensibly taking place around twin mysteries, but ultimately it is just about small town living and coming-of-age.
At times, the prose was absolutely beautiful and I found myself laying awake thinking about it, then having to get up and just finish it. Hence a review at 2:50am Brisbane time. 😝
I got this book from our book club Christmas. It is a first novel. Holly is an Aussie. I loved it. Very very Aussie. The ending was just perfect for me! 😊😊 . Give it a go.
Loving reading this wee treasure with my wee treasures on a miserable day
My best nine from 2016 featured so much bookish goodness 😍 I'm aiming for 90 books in 2017, after having read 76 in 2016. How many books are you hoping to read this year?
As someone fighting MS, this quote sums up my daily struggles 😂
Goodwood is like any small Australian town, I felt at home there while reading about it. Holly Throsby has a particular talent for language and her turn of phrase is compelling. I found myself sharing quotes on social media and re-reading passages because they were so well written. A thumbs up from me 👍
Getting into the Christmas Spirit at work. Only 2 more weeks until the end of term and then 6 weeks off for the Christmas break.

Struggling to adult today! I want to stay in bed and read, not struggle through hideous traffic and work 😆
Chicken salad and a small town mystery, perfect evening 🔎
Moving on from horror to mystery. A good Australian story. And it is #setinasmalltown for #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading
Really excellent book. Very worth picking up especially if you like mysteries or small towns. It's very well crafted and so hard to put down. A joy to read
'Chaotic' is how I would describe this book.
It's like we are seeing events unfold through Evie's eyes but she doesn't feel like the protagonist, just narrator. The stronger chapters were those with Mack and Davo or Judy and Mrs Bart because I could feel the emotional trauma caused by the missing people.
It flips between characters and between tenses but there were no strong individual voices between the characters.
I'm recording a podcast with Holly Throsby tomorrow and I can't wait to talk to her about her debut novel GOODWOOD✌🏼️
I love a coming of age story and Goodwood is an excellent example. Great characters, incredible sense of place and warm humour. Set in a quiet Australian town, two people go missing a week apart.
Feeling miserable with a head cold means bed, book and endless cups of tea.
