WOW. I really loved this book. I seriously could not put this book down. When I found out why Eleanor was sent away to boarding school and who Arthur was/how he became, I was truly surprised. Everything I guessed was not what it turned out to be. Definitely loved how everything tied together in the end. Left me with a very nostalgic feeling and the desire for more. 🐺

For as wild and feral as the characters are, this was a very bland read. Way too many loose ends (so…what‘s with Eleanor‘s mom?…no one is gonna explain that one?) and way too many stupid bits that the author tries to make into gothic enigmas…she did not do a great job at that. But hey, if you want to read a book about a stereotypical weird girl and the family that she doesn‘t feel connected to, then go for it! But be warned, this book has no bite.

Finally picking up a book again after two very busy weeks. Its feels like forever since I have had time to read!

This book has a low Litsy rating & I understand why. The blurb on the back cover refers to its “otherness,” which is the perfect word to describe it. Much of the story is un-pin-down-able. The time period is unclear. The characters‘ identities, allegiances, & moralities are unclear. It‘s hard to find your footing. And the answers we get by the end aren‘t fully illuminating. There are still pieces I feel confused about. 👇🏻

Perfect example of telling and not showing. Huge exposition dumps and I find all the characters unlikable.

The book was a perfect mix of the darker side of fairy tales and Eldritch creatures, with a dash of other horror stories to round it out. There‘s a spooky house, TWO creepy grandmothers, and a town of folx who may or may not own pitchforks. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Such a dark, weird, beautiful book. It had touches of The Munsters and The Addams Family if their stories were told as a gothic drama instead of a comedy. The book centers around Eleanor, who has run away from boarding school to return home to her family of monsters. Problem - Eleanor‘s family seems to be afraid of her.

This is Szabo‘s debut novel and I‘m excited for what they release next. This will absolutely be a re-read for me in the future.

When I read the synopsis for What Big Teeth by Rose Szabo, I was so excited! I love werewolf stories, and the idea of coming home from boarding school to a strange family sounds like a great plot to me. The opening chapters of the book were intriguing. Overall, What Big Teeth is a tame, YA fantasy with gothic undertones. It wasn't the werewolf story I was expecting, but I'm sure some readers of YA fantasy will appreciate its uniqueness.

First book down for #24in48 and what a doozy it was. I had a hard time in the first hundred pages wondering if I really cared where these breadcrumbs were leading me but holy wow that last half. Eleanor Zarrin has runaway from her posh school for girls where she has been for the last 8 yrs. She returns home to her family of witches and werewolves and has a hard time feeling like she belongs. With elements of gothic and fantasy, this was a 👇🏼

Teenage Eleanor flees home to her strange, savage family after an incident at her boarding school. The haunting, isolated setting of a gothic mansion on the outskirts of a small village creates an ominous foreboding atmosphere. The author skillfully builds tension, fear and a pervasive unsettling feeling of constant threat. I could not put this creepy yet triumphant book down. An astonishing and highly recommended debut about family and identity.

Mysterious. Chilling. Weird. Haunting. Bizarre. Original... These are all words that I would use to describe the debut young adult book What Big Teeth by Ruth Szabo. I went into this horror novel thinking that it was going to simply be a story of werewolves. This twisted tale turned in to so much more!

Quite easily the oddest book I have ever read. It's part horror story but also a coming of age story about love and family. Szabo writes in such an engrossing way, that I had a hard time putting this book down. I feel certain that I'll never find another book like this.
