Marcus‘s famous, but also secretly a fanfic writer. April‘s post causes a plus-size controversy. M publicly asks her out not knowing she‘s also his beta reader. After their date, he wants more of A, but will the hypercritical public get in the way?

This one had its cute & funny moments. I just didn‘t enjoy April kept negatively looking at herself; I know it‘s supposed to be an arc, but I don‘t enjoy those. I also wanted a little more spice.

Loved it. The initial conflict irked me (not that I think it‘s unrealistic, just me & how I am)& the major conflict was obvious, but the formula did take the plot in some minorly unexpected directions. The steam was steaming, it was cute, the fanfic/script chapter breaks didn‘t bother me (might be weird in audio) &as someone who loves cosplay & fandom this was a winner. It‘s an overgrown fanfic but it‘s good. Body positivity+neurodivergence rep.

5feet.of.fury Total side note but I recently DNF‘d a retelling of the Aeneid (which Marcus‘s show is based off a retelling of) & there was a quote from it in Game of Retribution, I feel like I am being haunted by the Aeneid & regretting my DNF of Lavinia -anyway 9mo

Reading the print was fine, but I had to switch quickly away from the audio. It was too confusing and it hates the narrators voice for Marcus on the audio. Better experience in print, though as I don‘t read fanfic, a lot was probably lost on me. I liked the emotional development of the relationship.

Overall I liked the book and found it to be an easy read but being a fan of fanfiction, this was weird for me to see in a published book. Some chapters were set up to open to look like an AO3 fic, chapter title and tags and all, so that was just so weirdly off-putting for me as a reader. Personally, it always took me away from the story and it's pacing and became a bit hard to get back into the actual story.

I was avoiding this book, but I‘m not sure why. Because I saw it floating around, but didn‘t want to pick it up. So this month, I decided to pick it up. It was just lovely. I‘m not a fan of fanfic. I might have tried reading it way back in the day. And this book jumped around a lot, so probably not the best to listen to the audio version. This was definitely about the last season of GoT and the writers, etc.

Clwojick Sounds cute! This is one from this author that I haven‘t read. 2y

Fanfiction lovers ruuun to get this book. We‘ve got a secretly dyslexic actor who hides behind a “I‘m hot and dumb” façade and write fan fiction of his own character. A hot, fat, geologist who‘s his best friend online who wrote fanfiction about his characters wife. And then they date without knowing they‘ve been online besties for years!! it‘s basic and I loved every single second of it. Read both books in this series now, Olivia, you are golden.

I couldn't relate to characters, they were boring.

I thought this would be fun so I was a disappointed. I don't read fanfiction either so wasn't really interested in some parts.

I didn't like how there was so much everything: the basic story but also group chats, direct messages, text messages, fanfiction and messages on discussion boards.

I was really disappointed with this one. It‘s basically a fanfiction about a Game of Thrones actor. The romance started right away and I got super bored. I just prefer slow burn. There was more 🌶 than I was expecting and those scenes were more awkward and abundant than anything. Once I realized I didn‘t care how it ended, I decided to move on. Other people seem to enjoy this one, it‘s just not my cup of tea.

BookLove4Ever @MadelineMcCrae I keep hearing mixed views on this one. 2y
RosePressedPages @BookLove4Ever it‘s definitely great with body positivity and representing fandom but I think the actual romance is a hit or miss for people 2y

I loved this book. I never read any of Olivia Dade‘s books before and I was utterly surprised. I have to admit it‘s refreshing to read about a chubby character falling in love with a famous person. I also love how the author deals with the issues the main characters have. An easy five stars for me.

I really enjoyed this fan/TV star plus pre-existing connection through fanfiction. Neither of our protagonists are a cookie cutter romance hero/ine and I loved the emphasis on them dealing with that through fanfic and then having to learn to translate to their actual lives (with corresponding angst).
I particularly loved seeing the ridiculous movie scripts and fanfic tags as part of the story - just felt right at home. Plus Steamy!

Through an act of Twitter, fanfiction writing geologist April suddenly finds herself dating the star of her favorite show—Marcus, who secretly writes fanfiction, too. This was such a fun, steamy, body positive, sex positive, heartwarming romance. My favorite parts were seeing April and Marcus love each other into being able to set boundaries with their respective toxic parents who don‘t see them as measuring up by each family‘s standards.

I liked the aspect that the two main characters meet online and developed admiration through each other's writing. Some bits were a bit long-winded. There was something that held me back from giving it a higher rating (gave it ⭐⭐⭐ but at this moment I can't put my finger on it.

Well, this was cute, but...

Marcus's secrecy felt constructed from the start, since it was clearly meant to lead to the pivotal conflict in the story.

Also, listening to all the DMs, Twitter messages, forum replies was no fun. They should have some sort of TW for that at the beginning of an audiobook.

As someone who: occasionally gets obsessed with Fandom; does not fit society's definition of appropriate weight; and wishes I had learned to love myself (and demand respect for myself) as a young woman I loved this. I liked both April and Marcus and I was pulling for them, individually and together. I'll read more by this author.

3⭐ I really liked this at first, but as it went on I began to lose interest, and it was a bit of a struggle for me to finish. I liked it, generally, but while the fandom aspect was so interesting to me, I didn‘t care for the fanfic excerpts and found them distracting and confusing.
The romance was cute and I liked the chemistry between Marcus and April, but I guess I just wasn‘t feeling all that invested in this one by the end.

This had such a great concept but the writing fell flat, the chemistry seemed not only unrealistic but also not believable. The story seemed to flow too smoothly for the challenges this couple would have faced.

I wouldn't normally put my fanfic consumption on litsy, but since it's a #ReadHarder2021 task I'll mention that I read “The Act of Creation Will Be Your Salvation,“ by Scifigrl47. It's Iron Man fanfic, and I don't even like Iron Man, but I do like stories that make me feel emotional about robots, and this delivers that in spades. Recommended; check it out at https://archiveofourown.org/works/401961.

A sweet fat positive (#readerharder2021) romance where an apparently vapid but pretty actor on a GoT-ish fantasy tv show somehow gets involved with the fanfic scene and then starts to date one of his fellow fanfic writers. She doesn‘t know she knew him as a fanfic writer... and thus shenanigans. I enjoyed the way this book dealt with fanfic, and the GoT snark, but found the plot and the general misery of the characters to be overly manufactured.

I have my book/film/tv show obsessions that I am sometimes embarrassed to admit, so this book was so satisfying to that piece of me. I am also a curvy woman who has struggled through two serious relationships where I didn‘t feel loved because of my weight. So much that I identified with here. BUT, I docked a full star because of, IMO, unnecessary use of the F word.

This book is a love letter to fandom. The best parts was the synopses of and excerpts from the bad movies that Marcus had been in before. It's a bit heavy on the wish fulfillment for my taste, and I never love books where the whole plot hinges on the characters keeping secrets from each other, but it was still a lot of fun.

#ReadHarder2021: a fat-positive romance.
