Trying to clear off the piles on my table. I keep finding these scraps of paper with lists of books I want to read. Managed to get to quite a few of them over the months but there is just not enough time to read them all! And yes, my piles accumulate over months. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Suet624 @AmyG Believe it or not I have one of those too. Then it became overwhelming. I think I have to start being more selective. I think my TBR on Litsy is over 2K (which has to be a mistake, but there it is). 3y

Suet624 @MaureenMc I love reading anything I can find about Dorothy. She‘s a bit hard on herself in that book. That‘s why I like reading books about her because they recognize and report on how much she accomplished. Enjoy!! 3y

Reggie Somewhere in a box of my stuff from my last apartment that I never put away, is a torn out a page from a People magazine that had Stephen King‘s Top 5 summer reads from like 2005. This is very that vibe. 😁 3y

#AwesomeAugust Readathon update: I managed to read and finish Midnight before the 15th so it doesn‘t count. I finished 4 books two which were in progress before the 15th and two which were unplanned. I am not quite 1/2 way through the audio of Pull of the Stars and it‘s so good. And I am enjoying #4 in the Gethsemane Brown mystery series. I have not made much progress on Too Much but will have my nose in it the rest of the evening.

Wow, do I have a lot of feelings about this wonderful book. I have a lot of shame around feeling like “too much”—too loud, too flirty, all over the place, a know it all, and on and on. RVC blends memoir and literary and cultural criticism in a frank and engaging way. The intro will hook you, I promise. And yes, I stole the poster from our bookstore‘s event 😊

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, the exploration of Victorian societal expectations, as expressed in the literature of the day, and the continuation of such ideals to now is interesting and engaging. However, the author gives over too much of this book to memoir, not all of which is illustrative of her thesis, and it feels a bit self-indulgent. I would have liked this more with more editing.

BronwynMahon I just finished this last night and feel the same! I was hoping for a more academic/feminist slant instead of such a personal one. But I enjoyed it once I readjusted my expectations. 4y

Hooked_on_books @BronwynMahon All the components are good and she writes well, but I‘m noticing this as a trend in nonfiction. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes it doesn‘t. I just don‘t think she balanced it quite right, but I do think she could write a good memoir. 4y

I know Rachel from UMD, so not only did I read this book in her actual voice, it felt like a conversation we could have hanging out in the grad lounge. Rachel deftly transitions between personal narrative, pop culture, and Victorian literature to trace the ways women's lives are circumscribed by societal expectations, using the metaphor of "too muchness" to describe those of us (i.e. everyone) who doesn't fit those parameters.
