I had a decent time with this book, but I'm finding it impossible to categorize for the sake of recommending it to the right audience.
A bunch of cozy moments, even set around Christmas/New Years holidays, but also worrying about political situations, social issues, parent's health, husband's well-being, the doom that the button box might unleash, and missing girls. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Less out and out horror moments now that King's not co-writing, a bit more focus on missing, possibly murderered people, wouldn't say it's full on fantasy considering that there are fantastical premises but not much in the way of fantastical moments. There is the theme continued from the first book of the box's potential influence and destructive power as well as it's rewards, but it too felt like an element that was downplayed this time. 3d
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Somewhere between jarring and unexpectedly pleasant that these books contain formatting I'm more used to associating with middle grade novels: Larger, more spaced out text, short chapters, illustrations dividing some chapters.
Paranormal suspense? And yet, not kept in suspense about anything for very long.
3d
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Were it not for a few key details I'd consider this cozy speculative, but there's definitely some not for kids stuff here. I think Chizmar's writing shines in cozy mystery-adjacent with speculative elements. Hopefully that doesn't lead prospective readers too far wrong! 3d
Robotswithpersonality 5/6 Going back to my qualifier of 'decent', there's a lot that almost happens and doesn't, and then there's an element that pops out of nowhere to save the day, and those two things in the same narrative make it feel less about the plot and more about the characters. 3d
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 I'm happy to finish out the trilogy, though having experienced Chizmar's writing alone, I'm a little concerned what having King re-join the co-writing team for the third book will do for Gwendy. Hoping for the best!

Who knows what the tone the second book in a series written by only one of the original co-authors, prefaced by a first book I might term horror-fantasy, might be, but what I do know is this is a very cute owl. ☺️

Vibrant colourway vibe from TBR pile. High contrast makes sense for what I'm willing to bet are intense narratives! 💛💙

This is an absolutely delightful return to Gwendy and her story, and the narrative threads that present themselves in the second go-around are tied up quite neatly by the end. Chizmar does a fantastic job maintaining the tone he and King set together in the first entry, and the result is as enjoyable to read as its predecessor. I can't wait to reach the final chapter in Gwendy's tale. 5/5

Richard Chizmar is becoming Stephen King 2.0. Every book I‘ve read by Chizmar is artfully written, suspenseful and, sometimes, with a touch of reality. This book was well written and had plenty of suspense to keep me going. The only downside was that I figured out who the kidnapper was halfway through. I still recommend it. #SeriesLove2024 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

“With breathtaking and lyrical prose, Gwendy‘s Magic Feather explores whether our lives are controlled by fate or the choices we make and what price we sometimes have to pay. Prepare to return again to Stephen King‘s Castle Rock, the sleepy little town built on a bedrock of deep, dark secrets, just as it‘s about to awaken from its quiet slumber once more.”

I like Chizmar‘s prose and voice, but I this often felt like a story that didn‘t quite know what it wanted to be about. There‘s a serial killer subplot that seems tacked on, familial drama that is poignant but falls flat, and the mysterious button box that ultimately felt inconsequential within the narrative. I still love Gwendy as a character, but this missed the mark for me.

Gwendy is an adult when magic from her past finds her again. Very interesting to see how the title character behaved as an adult vs her experience as an adolescent.

Great continuation of this story. I was worried that I would miss King's collaboration, but Chizmar did an excellent job of expanding Gwendy's story, making it his own, but leaving lots of accolades to King's writing within the story.

I'm excited to read the conclusion to Gwendy's tale.

🎧 I like Gwendy. Very Stephen King.

Gwendy‘s mom is unwell. Gwendy‘s going to fix it.

Gwendy is a congresswoman & girls are disappearing in her town.

Good dialog. Good characters. Really good narration! Good story. So short!!

If you liked the first story you‘ll probably like this one too!! I loved it but I enjoy a good short story 😁

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bookwormjillk I just started the final book yesterday. Still good, no longer short 🤷‍♀️ 3y

A lot of the reviews of this book on Goodreads are one and two stars, but a lot of the reviewers just seem to be unhappy with it because Stephen King wasn‘t a coauthor like he was with Gwendy‘s Button Box. I liked it even though it wasn‘t tightly plotted. It was really late in the book, though, over halfway through, before we encounter the feather. I‘m unsure if it‘s related to the power of the box.

TrishB I enjoyed it too. 3y
KathyWheeler @TrishB 👍🏼 I thought the 1 star rating were harsh and don‘t understand them. Now I have to get Gwendy‘s Final Task. (edited) 3y

This second book in the series is written by Richard Chizmar alone and I really enjoyed it. Such a great continuation of Gwendy and the button box. Gwendy is such an interesting character and this story finds her in adulthood now. Good read!!

I‘m off today because of my husband‘s doctor‘s appointments, and now that we‘re home from all that, I thought I‘d settle in and read more about Gwendy.

I didn‘t read this after the first one as King wasn‘t involved. But since reading one of Chizmar‘s own books I thought I‘d give it a go.
Really enjoyed it, he does that small town King like vibe really well. Apparently number 3 is coming out and it‘s a collaboration again.

I read this Sept 5-6 and gave it 3.5 ⭐️. This book seems to polarize readers on Good Reads. Some of the first reviews are either people who hated it or people who loved it. It was a decent enough book that had a problem of being just a little too busy. It also resolved only a few things and left me with more questions.

I must admit, I was a little worried that I wasn't going to like this sequel because Stephen King didn't co-write it like the first one. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though it didn't have the horror feel like the first one, this short book showed that everyone has temptations and how magic and a little faith can make the worst situations turn good. I'm so glad I picked up this book

This was missing all of the delightful darkness and creep factor of the first book. (I guess that's what happens when you lose Stephen King...) I found this really dull with a weird upbeat ending. Chizmar tries super hard to achieve that uncomfortable squirminess the reader feels when reading King books, I mean, there is a serial killer subplot. But it just can't quite get there. Ultimate meh. On the plus side, it's a fast read.

Review || Gwendy‘s Magic Feather | Richard Chizmar

I have mixed feelings on this one. The main character is now an adult (37, I believe.) and A LOT has happened off the page. While I enjoyed her journey back into the magical world of the box, I found it oddly political and lacking in the magic charm of the original (Lack of King influence?). It was short enough to recommend if you enjoyed its predecessor.

#Booked2020 | #HatHeadCoveringOnCover

Cinfhen Sorry this was only a so-so 😔 5y
LiterRohde @Cinfhen It was a high so-so; could have been a low pick. It‘s weird sometimes to rate books when you only have pick, so-so, and pan. It just didn‘t live up to the original. 5y
Cinfhen I totally agree, I‘m not a fan of the generic rating system!! Im glad it fell on the higher side of so-so 😊 5y

January wrap up! I completed 7 books and these are the top 3, Gwendy‘s #1! 🏆 🏆

I have 4 more on the go, of the 4, 2 are in a bit of a holding pattern because I‘m not feeling them.
Most importantly, those 7 books were all from my personal TBR! Both print and ebook, but I read them!

Wow it‘s been awhile since I‘ve finished a book. Been a rough fall and winter for reading. Just like the first one, it‘s a solid, easy read. Nothing fantastic, but a fun read that‘s on the shorter side—which is a nice break from my usual mammoth reads.

1) eclectic, sporadic, passionate

2) I love reading on the beach or camping, anywhere I guess. I like to read before bed.

3) The tagged, edging out Educated but just barely. Worst, Head Over High Heels (or a good reminder that I don‘t enjoy romance)

I squee‘d with joy when I saw this book on the new arrivals shelf at the library. Gwendy‘s Button Box is one of my absolute favorite books and I‘ve already read it 3 times in the last year. The sequel picks up in 1999, when Gwendy is 37. The button box magically reappears in her life and strange things start happening. Not as good as the original but a solid story and I would love to read more books about her. 4⭐️

rubyslippersreads How scary are these books? They sound intriguing, but I just can‘t handle much horror/gruesomeness. 5y
JenlovesJT47 @rubyslippersreads not scary at all imo, more of a supernatural element. The second book does deal with the disappearances of a few girls but they don‘t go into great detail about it. It mostly focuses on Gwendy. I can‘t recommend the first book enough! Plus, it‘s short. 🤗 5y
