Lords classic bestseller, and the definitive account of the unsinkable ships fateful last hoursAt first, no one but the lookout recognized the sound. Passengers described it as the impact of a heavy wave, a scraping noise, or the tearing of a long calico strip. In fact, it was the sound of the worlds most famous ocean liner striking an iceberg, and it served as the death knell for 1,500 souls. In the next two hours and forty minutes, the maiden voyage of the Titanic became one of historys worst maritime accidents. As the ships deck slipped closer to the icy waterline, women pleaded with their husbands to join them on lifeboats. Men changed into their evening clothes to meet death with dignity. And in steerage, hundreds fought bitterly against certain death. At 2:15 a.m. the ships band played Autumn. Five minutes later, the Titanic was gone.Based on interviews with sixty-three survivors, Lords moment-by-moment account is among the finest books written about one of the twentieth centurys bleakest nights.

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!). Feel free to join in!

A well-written and taut piece of historical fiction. There are elements which are outdated, of course, but Lord manages to tell the human story that both defines and informs the Titanic‘s tragedy extremely well.

Bklover I loved this book! Read it years- no, decades ago! 1y

A favorite conspiracy, second to the JFK Assassination, is the sinking of the Titanic. If you know good resources for either one, please share 🤓

Unfortunately, this book is neither here nor there, haha just a good play by play of events before it sank. (No fiction like the movie.)

It is a quick read - 150 pages or so.

A completely enthralling true account of the Titanic sinking. The author interviewed dozens of survivors & created a vivid picture of the tragedy. He balances details with background stories of passengers & crew. There were so many surprising facts, like the Titanic being the first ocean liner to send an SOS & the horrible class discrepancies in who was saved. An excellent nonfiction book that stood the test of time since its 1950s publication.

rabbitprincess I just read The Last Voyage of the Andrea Doria, about a passenger ship that sank in 1956, and many passengers were reading A Night to Remember on board 😬 4y

Finished this audiobook on our Nature Park walk this afternoon. This classic non-fiction about the sinking of the Titanic was very interesting. The author obviously did his research and even interviewed many of the survivors (this was written in the 1950s). It's a very straightforward account with many personal anecdotes. Lessons learned - do not go full speed through iceberg infested waters and carry enough lifeboats for everyone.

#NFNov This was a detailed but very sympathetic account of the last night of Titanics existence. The class divide at the time definitely played a part in a lot of deaths, not as many as the movie portrayed but the difference in death tolls between classes is substantial. #TIL - there were more male 1st class passengers saved than women & children in 3rd class.🚢 #NonFiction2019 #SomethingWithTravel

Decided to go with this book next for #NFNov I‘ve been slightly obsessed with the Titanic since I was a child. My dad had this beautiful coffee table book about Great Ocean Liners. #TIL - 14yrs before the sinking, an author wrote a novel about a great liner called the Titan with similar dimensions to the real ship, he wrote about the lack of enough lifeboats, called it Unsinkable then had it hit an iceberg on an April night & sink. #premonitions

Crazeedi Wow, that's eerie.... 5y

A quick, informative read. I‘ve been fascinated by all things Titanic since I was in the 3rd grade.

So many little “what if‘s” that played into the tragedy of that night. Having fairly recently listened to The Midnight Watch by David Dyer, many of these facts felt very familiar but it was still a well written and interesting read.

I will definitely be passing this book on for others to enjoy. #bookcrossing

#BookMail Pt7 After reading both Dead Wake(about the Lusitania)& Indianapolis(the sinking in WWII)for #NonFiction2019 I got hooked on shipwrecks. And of course, the most famous shipwreck is Titanic, and this is the most famous book written about the tragedy. Usually first on lists of what to read about the sinking, I tracked down a 2ndhand copy on AbesBooks for $2. Conditions not as good as advertised, but for $2, if I like it I‘ll buy a new edition.

Reading all the little misses (flares thought to be fireworks) that could have made this just another ship that sunk really brings home just how #tragic the sinking of the Titanic was😔

#ReadingResolutions Day16

Reviewsbylola I read this fairly recently. You‘re right, unbelievably tragic. 7y
TheBookgeekFrau @Reviewsbylola If all those little and not so little ‘mishaps‘ didn‘t all happen at once, things would‘ve been so different that night 7y
Nute A tragedy made so much more tragic when you conclude that maybe things didn‘t have to end as they did. 7y

A superb author who brought the tragedy of the Titanic into a new light. I have read A Night to Remember but not The Night Lives On. An absolutely heartbreaking and bittersweet collection of interviews from survivors in a wonderfully written novel fashion. An absolute must read for anyone who is a history lover.

Whilst not the happiest of books for summer this is a fascinating insight into the events of that fateful night. I've read a few books on the Titanic but feel this is the best. Whilst some breakthroughs in how it sank have been discovered since its publication the book offers a fantastic account of how events unfolded while showing a sense of emotion, remembering amidst it all many real lives were lost that night.

CindyMyLifeIsLit I read this as a teenager and was mesmerized. I had learned about the Titanic in school, but that book really brought the magnitude of the tragedy home for me. 7y
myers85 I agree. Many writers have focused on facts and figures but I really felt a sense of emotion with this account. 7y

This was a mixed bag for me. I appreciated that Lord was attempting to give a full account of the Titanic sinking. It's the most definitive book I've read on the tragedy, so not a book to miss if you're a titanic buff. I didn't like how Lord inserted his own thoughts and asides throughout the text and I also thought that it was a bit dry.

emilyhaldi Aw man, more dry non-fiction! Wah wahhhhh. Maybe dad would like! 8y
