From New York Times bestselling author Nic Stone comes a middle-grade road-trip story through American race relations past and present, perfect for fans of Jacqueline Woodson and Jason Reynolds. How to Go on an Unplanned Road Trip with Your Grandma: Grab a Suitcase: Prepacked from the big spring break trip that got CANCELLED. Fasten Your Seatbelt: G'ma's never conventional, so this trip won't be either. Use the Green Book: G'ma's most treasured possession. It holds history, memories, and most important, the way home. What Not to Bring: A Cell Phone: Avoid contact with Dad at all costs. Even when G'ma starts acting stranger than usual. Set against the backdrop of the segregation history of the American South, take a trip with New York Times bestselling Nic Stone and an eleven-year-old boy who is about to discover that the world hasn't always been a welcoming place for kids like him, and things aren't always what they seem--his G'ma included.

Happy Thanksgiving week to everyone in the US! I love the use of a grandparent/grandchild relationship to frame a historical fiction story. The tagged book does that along with a crazy adventure! Another good one is The Lost Year by Katherine Marsh. I can't wait to see your selections for this #middlegrademonday

Clean Getaway is funny, historically informative and involves solving a mystery! It was my first introduction to the Green Book. Not your average #roadtrip experience for #middlegrademonday!

I love Nic Stone. This MG book had some really great ideas and moments, but the premise of the grandma just basically kidnapping the kid just felt wrong to me.

If I think about them just taking a trip together, the book takes on a whole new meaning for me. I loved the way the grandma and grandson connected and how she opened up and shared his family's past. I just couldn't get past the kidnapping. 😕

Not my favorite MG novel. I was hoping this would be more about visiting civil rights sites and less about a senile grandmother kidnapping her grandson. I guess I just found the kidnapping premise…odd…and it took away from enjoying the more educational aspects. But I‘m not a 10 year old, so maybe a kid that age would enjoy it more. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Loved Dion Graham‘s narration though!! #AuthorAMonth

When Scoob‘s grandma shows up unannounced to take him on a road trip, he leaves a note for his dad and grabs his bag. Scoot soon realizes that 1. His grandma is ignoring his dad‘s phone calls and 2. Grandma does not seem like herself.

As Scoob gets to know his grandma in a new way, he realizes his family history is different from the story he‘s heard growing up.

Another #librofm #educatoralcs and this one was a hit! Once again confirming that I like fiction #audiobooks so much more than nonfiction.

This is a sweet middle grade road trip story about family, race and identity and how others don‘t always live up to our expectations. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this #middlegrade story about a young black boy on a road trip with his white grandma. During the way, G‘ma is reliving some personal history while also teaching Scoob about the civil rights movement and how it affected her and his grandfather. Some laughs, some mystery, and a lot of love in this one. #bbrc #mellowyellow #bookspinbingo

I loved everything about this book. It was a quick read. I loved the set up and storyline. The educational information in this story was a plus and a great way to introduce it to middle schoolers. This would be one that I would use if I taught middle school.

Scoob is grounded when his G‘ma shows up in a brand new RV and wants him to go on a road trip with her. As they retrace a road trip that Scoob‘s G‘pop and G‘ma went on in the 1960‘s. During this trip Scoob finds out things about his G‘ma‘s past that he never knew about. He also learns that his G‘ma is hiding something very important. I wasn‘t to sure about this book when I first started reading it but I am glad I stayed with it!

My #LMPBC choice for a diverse middle grade read. It was not anything I expected. I do not want to say too much but I am very very interested to see what the rest of my group say and others who have read it.

ElizaMarie I always see this # and didn't know what it meant. What does #LMPBC mean!?
4y
Chrissyreadit @ElizaMarie it‘s Litsy Markup postal Book Club. @suvata organizes it. Groups of 4 read a book, put notes and thoughts in then mail to the next person. It‘s so much fun! 4y
ElizaMarie @Chrissyreadit ooo it does sound fun. I would have to look in to it. I have a bunch of buddy reads about to start but maybe when they start a new round. 4y

ElizaMarie @LibrarianRyan ooo that would be a perfect time to start! I‘ll keep my eyes open for it 4y
Chrissyreadit @LibrarianRyan @TheBookHippie @SaturnDoo checking in cause I haven‘t seen any posts- I did not get a book yet. Did Clean Getaway arrive? 4y
LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie @SaturnDoo I sent my books over a week ago. I sent 9 packages and 14 letters. Only 2 packages and the international letters have been delivered. Uggghhhhh also Chrissy, you note says something is in your package that‘s not. It‘s coming separate. I forgot to put it in. (edited) 4y
LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit not quite but it felt like it. I was aiming for back space but hit send instead. 😜😀🙃 4y
Chrissyreadit @LibrarianRyan your envelope came yesterday but I was in the middle of Brynnes graduation gathering- and just remembered I forgot to post. Thanks for the bookmarks! I‘m sharing with Brynnes girlfriend. She‘s an avid reader who somehow has no bookmarks of her own. 4y
LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit share away. It was supposed to be in with your book. Those were mailed 3 days after the book. At a different post office. It‘s explained with the book. I was just telling @rockpools how bad uS mail is right now. Ughhhhh. 4y
Chrissyreadit @LibrarianRyan oh no!!! The mail is really struggling! Last round I received the mangled empty envelope and no book for LMPBC. Hopefully it will turn up. 4y
LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit I‘ve had that happen twice. Each time never found. And I had the people for Maya and the dragon email me about the copy I won and if I read it what I thought and that they are waiting for my review. I just assumed it was never sent. Ughh. It‘s also way I‘ve taken to putting a double label, one in the package and one on the book itself. I love the USPS but I don‘t love what is currently happening to it. 👿 4y
Chrissyreadit @LibrarianRyan I agree- it has been awful. I think one of Trumps goals is to hobble it so much people will be glad it‘s gone. Then we will be at the mercy of corporate mail service. This is insanity. I like your idea of double wrapping. I will try to do that also. I had a mangled amazon package- empty but the envelope still delivered. 4y
Chrissyreadit @LibrarianRyan that‘s why I reached out too- I was worried about mine being delivered and the arrival - I‘m really laid back about actual mailing times. 4y

Grounded for fighting a bully, William "Scoob" Lamar first sees his G'ma's invitation for a road trip as freedom. She takes him from Atlanta towards Mexico, retracing a trip she took with G'pa in 1968 and teaching Scoob how hard it was for them to travel safely as an interracial couple. But Scoob soon realizes family history isn't the only secret she's keeping!

#SummerFun #BlackVoices
@4thhouseontheleft @StayCurious

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I loved the way this book described complicated emotions, such as Scoob rationalizing his decision to cheat in computer science and his mixed fear and longing to call his dad after leaving without permission. 4y

Loved this fun MG novel! Scoob is grounded, so when his G-Ma shows up in a brand new RV and invites him on an adventure he jumps on it! Leaving his cell at home, he and G-Ma start retracing her and G-Pops old trip route. I loved the inclusion of historical references, biracial family make up, and complex family dynamics. This was a cute & quick read!

Scoob has had a rough time at school and home. G‘ma Ruby whisks him away in her brand new RV, and it‘s fun at first. But then she starts acting weird, and Scoob doesn‘t know what to do.

Lots of history about interracial relationships and the civil rights movement. Good introduction for the middle grade kids.

I was struck more by Stone‘s writing style than the content, which to be sure is top notch YA. There‘s such an economy of words in the prose... some of the biggest moments in the book happened “off screen”... which was absolutely fine by me!

megnews @Chrissyreadit I get it. I felt that way about the daughter in The Library of Lost Things having to be an adult because of mom‘s mental health. I dnf‘d that. I enjoyed the road trip aspect of this one and I guess I gave grandma more slack than mom. 4y

I enjoyed this #middlegrade #audiobook and think it provides an interesting introduction to some key places and events of the Civil Rights movement. The relationship between Scoob and his G‘ma starts out entertaining, but becomes much more complex as he learns his family‘s history. The ending seemed to tie things up neatly, yet it left some important questions unanswered. (Length: 3 hr. 56 min.)
