Dear Child
Dear Child | Romy Hausmann
Gone Girl meets Room in this page-turning thriller from one of Germany's hottest new talents A windowless shack in the woods. Lena's life and that of her two children follows the rules set by their captor, the father: Meals, bathroom visits, study time are strictly scheduled and meticulously observed. Oxygen comes from a 'circulation machine', and food is provided by the father only. He protects his family from the dangers lurking in the outside world and makes sure that his children will always have a mother to look after them. One day Lena manages to flee - but the nightmare continues. It seems as if her tormentor wants to get back what belongs to him. And then there is the question whether she really is the woman called 'Lena', who disappeared without a trace 14 years ago. The police and Lena's family are all desperately trying to piece together a puzzle which doesn't quite seem to fit.

This is a gripping psychological novel. It's a book filled with twists and turns that kept me reading until the very end. Matthias realizes that the girl is not Lena when a women turned up at the hospital. Hannah is the spitting image of Lena. The book is told from 3 different POV's - Lena, Hannah and Matthias. I'm looking forward to reading the next book by Romy Housmann.

EadieB If you like books like ROOM and GONE GIRL then you will love this book. Highly recommended! 4mo

Saturday last I landed on Netflix and binged this series. Then I saw the series was based on a German book and the translated book had a short library hold, and I had to go there. Although the series kinda-sorta aligned with the book, there were significant changes in the adaption. The book had more in-depth backstories for the adults in the story, and we were better able to ‘hear‘ the conversations in their heads.

Compelling, dark German thriller with no comic relief. This is the kind of story that makes me take a long look at my life and seriously assess how many weapons I can carry on my person without being crazy. ? Because you might just get kidnapped by a psychopath and drug off to be his bunker wife to replace the last kidnapped wife. The story is told in first person by the "wife" who escaped, the father of the first ⬇️

LitStephanie kidnap victim, and the creepy little daughter of the abducter. The vulture like reporters seem over the top, but maybe they are that way in Germany. The parents of the first victim are kind of a$$holes after what they have been through, which actually makes them more realistic. Good voice talent. #foodandlit #germany 2y
Reggie The lady who gives drinks out at work, she‘s in her late 60s, she told me her son sent her a taser for Xmas. So maybe a taser, some pepper spray on the keychain, a small blade hidden in your hair if its long enough, and maybe you wear a garter belt where you pack your gun. Lol idk I‘m sure those are just the obvious choices. Maybe you can put some kind of poison in a ring whose top you can twist off? Also, stacked. Sounds intriguing. 2y
LitStephanie @Reggie A knife in my hair sounds fun, LOL!! And a poison ring! Don't encourage my paranoid tendencies! 😆 I do carry pepper spray. I have one of those taser flashlight things but generally I only carry one or the other. Pretty sure after reading that book I will start carrying both. Enjoy the book, it is really good! 2y

Dear Child was a gripping, chilling read (and a quick one!) to devour on a dark, stormy night. If you‘re in the mood for a charged thriller and you can cope with all the triggers (cruelty, violence against women and children, etc.), this is a good one to try. This dark and twisty novel set in Germany is one of the best psychological thrillers I‘ve read in years. Hausmann packs a lot of gut punches into her debut novel, and I was happy to accept them. This is the best kind of thriller - a true page turner that will have you reading into the wee hours and sleeping with the lights on. I want to say more, but the less you know about this one the better. Just read it. 5⭐️

This definitely had the feel of “Room”. I was thoroughly invested in this story and finding out what happened. The epilogue made me very emotional. The only complaint I have is that it felt like it dragged a lot.

A woman held captive with two children finally escapes and calls herself Lena, which is also the name of a woman who went missing years ago.

But Lena‘s family is certain this woman is NOT their Lena.

Who is this woman, and who are the children who had been forced to live this unimaginable life?

Def. gave me Room vibes, which is one of my favorite books, but also had much more of a suspense feel to it.

I stayed up past midnight to finish!

bibliobliss Sounds like a good book 4y

Dark, page-turning, and plot twisting, this novel describes the aftermath of a woman who escapes her kidnapper. Some flashbacks include her time in captivity and alternate points of view from other characters. With this evidence, the reader has enough information to try to put together who the abductor could be. I don‘t like long soliloquies at the end of thrillers that explain everything, but it did keep me engaged. Good, but not Gone Girl/ Room.

Book 154 I listened to Dear Child and originally mistook it for a story like The Room. Dear Child is less about how the captured will escape their prison and more about how they got in. It's a typical suspense/thriller novel. It kept me guessing. Even when I thought I had figured it out, I was wrong. I recommend it to those who like the genre, and I will watch for more from Hausmann.

Dear Child starts with a missing girl and a car accident, and spirals into a story of abduction, obsession, and creepy children. It is told from three points of view, which make the story quite fast-paced and engaging. If you enjoyed Room by Emma Donoghue, you might enjoy Dear Child too! 3.5⭐

A psychological thriller that kicks it up a notch from Emma Donohue's Room. Set in Germany, a woman held captive for months is rescued along with two other children. As the group attempt to heal from their ordeal while the media scrutinizes their story, more secrets are revealed concerning their captor that connects to another missing woman and a bereaved father. For fans of Karen Dionne's The Marsh King's Daughter.

This riveting pageturner reminds me of Emma Donouhue‘s Room, but with more perspectives-& a lot more twists! Told across 3 perspectives, the book opens in a hospital after a hit & run accident. A young girl is there with some alarming answers to basic questions, a woman fades in & out of consciousness & a father races to discover if the woman is the daughter that went missing almost 14 years earlier. Surprising & exciting, I couldn‘t put it down!

EH2018 I completely agree with you! Similar to room but with much more detail and depth to the characters. 4y

I found this to be an incredible, completely engrossing read. It‘s so well written, with a plot that keeps you on tenterhooks throughout. It grabs you from the very start and doesn‘t let go. Dealing with the trauma of abduction, violence and fear it‘s not an easy read at times but so compelling.

A fantastically chilling and original thriller….this is a must read.
