Motherland, Fatherland, Homelandsexuals
Motherland, Fatherland, Homelandsexuals | Patricia Lockwood
Digte. What if a deer did porn? Is America going down on Canada? What happens when Niagara Falls gets drunk at a wedding? Is it legal to marry a stuffed owl exhibit? What would Walt Whitman's tit-pics look like? Why isn't anyone named Gary anymore? The poems' subject is the natural world, but their images would never occur in nature

I largely didn‘t understand most of these poems but I liked the ideas that I understood and some of them stuck out as very unique and well done. not really a poetry girl but my sister gave me this book so I gave it a shot.

I'm officially intrigued by this author. A couple of these poems are beyond brilliant so I'm calling this a strong pick. And this cover is just awesome.

“Commence me taking hundreds of boob photos, and studying them closely, and thinking most of those don‘t even look like boobs.
And I thought, “This is not something Emily Dickinson or Walt Whitman would have done. Or is it.”

On this reread, Lockwood launched me once again into her universe of actors in gorilla suits and porn scenes between humans and nature, of licentious deer and rape incidents twisted into a joke—which I‘m so glad to visit a second time, as I find it brilliant, working wonders for teaching me about the powers of imagination.

quote
Taylor

The poets have money to spend
in the cities: they spend the newest American dollars,
the crisp-aired greenest American dollars, blazing
with pictures of National Parks. 💵

I‘m rereading this too....

Another book I read only because a friend lent it to me, insistently almost—and it ended up being far, far better than I ever expected. I love the way Lockwood writes these strange but oh so catchy and palatable poems. The lines hum and the ideas are one-of-a-kind and the imagery described sends landscapes, flora and beasts flashing through my mind.

BkClubCare Have you read Priest Daddy? Amazing... 4y
Taylor @BkClubCare I have not. Maybe I should check it out.... I‘m not a big memoir person though. 4y

Part two of the top #40in2019tbr list that I made (incorrectly) for @LibrarianRyan ‘s fun giveaway (which is still going on — check it out)! This doesn‘t serve as an entry, since I read the rules wrong... but it was still useful to make - & hopefully interesting for you to peruse.

Any books you feel passionately about on here (either negatively or positively)? Are any of them on your TBR, too? 🤓

"Rape Joke" by Patricia Lockwood was published online by The Awl in 2013 #provoking a huge viral response. Worth a read -- even if poetry isn't your cuppa tea.

Bedtime reading. I've been super into poetry lately. #poems #poetry #patricialockwood

cariashley I'm not a big poetry reader but Rape Joke (in this collection) is outstanding. 7y
shawnmooney Interesting. Something tells me @Lindy will be interested too if she hasn't already read it. 7y
Lindy @shawnmooney I bailed on it when it first came out. I heard Lockwood read some of it on a podcast recently, and I loved it, so now I want to give it a second try. 7y

Between a pick and a so-so for me. I had read Rape Joke on The Awl and it was equally affecting here. I didn't connect with many of the poems, though the ones I did were powerful.

Just had a particularly harrowing appliance delivery (moves and deliveries are always nightmares in NYC) involving 2 nasty delivery guys, 4 amazing guys from my building, door removals, baseboard destruction and discovery of plumbing issues and illegal vents! So I NEED this Pinot noir and poetry for the next little bit. 😰🍷📖

Picked up library books today and it's making me so happy. I have so much regular fiction to read at home already I feel guilty taking any out from the library, so graphic novels and poetry it is! #libraryhaul
