I had some mixed feelings about this book...this came up in Beartown too, but Backman‘s “life lessons” that he started every chapter with struck me as a bit cheesy/preachy and could be pretty annoying. But! I loved the characters in this book, especially those who displayed such courage and kindness in the face of violence and hate. There was also a very emotional, uplifting ending, which was appreciated after the tragic events that took place.

I‘ve just finished this book and I‘m now in that state where I feel numb to everything going on in the real world, I will probably need hours to recover, and I can‘t stop thinking about this story and above all, these powerful, complicated, amazing characters. I‘ve seen some say that this book has a slow start, which I understand, but I personally liked the character-driven nature of this story⬇️

So I‘ve seen this going around and felt obligated to prove myself seeing as my bio states I am “100% Slytherin.” That‘s not possible in this quiz (unfortunately), but I‘d still say that‘s a pretty high percentage...

Wow. Though some parts of this book were slow, the last third really picked up and hit me so hard with all the tragedy, heartbreak, beauty, intelligence, and excitement that I have come to expect from Victor Hugo. This book really does center on the Notre-Dame cathedral (the original French title being Notre-Dame de Paris) which overlooks all the action with a presence that can be both unforgiving and nurturing to this cast of societal outcasts.

Did I need this new copy of Les Mis? No. I already have five. But it‘s so nice, and I have no impulse control when it comes to this book, so here we are...

I love when old books are way more funny than the author probably ever intended

In this classic, every sentence of Baldwin‘s is masterfully constructed, and it‘s hard to believe this book was published in 1956. From the very beginning, these characters spin towards their inevitably tragic endings as a result of the main character‘s self-repression and insecurity, and his need to run away from his own desires and the one person that could make him happy.
⚠️ Amazing read, but incredibly sad

Ok so I honestly have so much to say about this book, it‘s witty and magical and romantic and the two main characters are so frustrating but so AMAZING at the same time. Their relationship progresses so slowly that you can barely see it happening and by the end they are both so different but also so much themselves and it just makes so much SENSE! Sophie and Howl are my favs🌟

Just. This quote perfectly sums up how this book was like a fairytale but also just a COMPLETE inversion of the fairytale and it was honestly so funny and sweet and...

Golden.

1. Probably Beauty and the Beast (is The Princess Bride a fairytale?)
2. Gaston...not really a “favorite” because he‘s obviously pretty horrible, but he‘s different from many of the others because he‘s actually super popular and admired by everyone around him which makes him more dangerous

From the very first line, I am so drawn to this whimsical, magical tone! ✨✨✨💫

When I picked up this book, I expected the whole alien/sci-fi element to play a much bigger role. I was happy that the book actually turned out to be a down-to-earth examination of what it means to be alive in a universe where all of our actions are inevitably meaningless and the value of living after tragedy. I was also pleasantly surprised by the mature portrayal of the characters‘ various mental health issues, which is always nice to see.
