The Corpse Exhibition
The Corpse Exhibition: And Other Stories of Iraq | Hassan Blasim
20 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 16 to read
A blistering debut that does for the Iraqi perspective on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan what Phil Klays Redeployment does for the American perspectiveThe first major literary work about the Iraq War from an Iraqi perspectiveby an explosive new voice hailed as perhaps the best writer of Arabic fiction alive (The Guardian)The Corpse Exhibitionshows us the war as we have never seen it before. Here is a world not only of soldiers and assassins, hostages and car bombers, refugees and terrorists, but also of madmen and prophets, angels and djinni, sorcerers and spirits. Blending shocking realism with flights of fantasy, The Corpse Exhibition offers us a pageant of horrors, as haunting as the photos of Abu Ghraib and as difficult to look away from, but shot through with a gallows humor that yields an unflinching comedy of the macabre. Gripping and hallucinatory, this is a new kind of storytelling forged in the crucible of war.

(Partial) book haul for #independentbookstoreday - I bought at least one book at every store visited today (tagged but not pictured is a book I ordered from powells awhile ago that happened to arrive today). I definitely went a little wild today and am now on a book buying ban for the foreseeable future.

Soubhiville I considered My Cat Yugoslavia as well. You‘ll have to tell me what you think. 2y

Eyelit @Soubhiville will do - you can borrow it as well if you like 😃 2y

Mehso-so

These short stories form a raw depiction of #Iraq in its darkest years. The stories are filled with death, bombs, torture, beheadings, betrayal and pain. It‘s unimaginable this was Hassan Blasim‘s reality before he fled to Europe - and that of the many who stayed. How little we know.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention @Hooked_on_books

Hooked_on_books You‘re so welcome! How are you doing overall in the challenge? 3y
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I am doing well, I‘ve read 27 out of 44 so far. A lot of hard ones though 😅. How are you doing? 3y
Hooked_on_books I‘ve made great progress, only 12 to go! I think I have most of them planned out, and I have a whole grouping lined up on audio soon. It‘s such a fun challenge! 3y

Librarybelle That cover is intriguing 3y
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle I agree, the cover triggered me too. But the content is harsh! 3y
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books only 12, impressive. I have most of them planned as well, though I still don‘t have a book in mind for all countries. But there‘s six months left 😉 3y

Pickpick

This searing story collection unveils the reality of living with constant risk of violence, which is dropped almost casually into each story, in #Iraq. It‘s brutal enough that I had to switch back and forth between this and a book that gives me joy. It‘s a worthy read.

#ReadingAsia2021

Librarybelle Wow! I just read the description in Litsy too. It sounds very powerful. 4y
BarbaraBB I‘ve had this one in mind got Iraq too. Would you recommend it? 4y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Yes, it‘s quite good. But have something light ready for after you finish or to read at the same time, as this one is emotionally difficult. 4y
BarbaraBB Thanks, I‘ll remember that. 4y

"Once he asked me to help him collect time. We went down toward the valley, stretched out on our stomachs, and proceeded to stare at a weed without moving for more than an hour. We were as silent as stone statues. It was Marwan's belief that if we stared at anything in nature for an hour we would store that hour in our brains. While other people lost time, we would collect it."

Book mail book mail book mail! 😍 Thanks Powell's Books for the sale last week. I definitely spoiled myself with a long time resident on my TBR (the title book above) and two authors whose works I've wanted to explore. Can't wait for the weekend now 🙌🏻

After selling 26 copies of this based on a friend's enthusiastic recommendation, I finally read it. And I wonder how many people finished this book. It's good, but so grimdark.

So engrossed in reading this that I missed my metro stop 😕

EllieDottie Ha! That is a bummer! But I love it when a book can do that! 8y
Smrloomis @EllieDottie agreed! Except when I make myself late 😂 8y

grandma_loves_books I did that while driving home. Both my son and I missed that we passed the freeway change because we were so caught up in a story. A bit inconvenient! 8y
Smrloomis @grandma_loves_books I feel your pain 😕 8y
Listener15 Oh I have done that many times to the point that I had timed each part of my commute/ride and set a timer to go off to give me time to finish a paragraph and get ready for my stop. 8y

I don't need any more new books, but ok maybe just one more... I expect this to be as dark as the title implies.

shawnmooney Wow! 8y
Smrloomis @shawnmooney I just watched this of him reading in Arabic with Jonathan Wright's English translation below: https://youtu.be/emAtQaFfTLQ Excellent, but of course very, very dark. 8y

After trying to think of a light, fun book to recommend someone, it really hit me that I love dark, depressing, serious, usually really weird books. Anyone have recs for lighter but maybe still substantial books?

I waited an amazing 16 days to buy a book this year! And it was only 3.50! (When you work in a bookstore, that's a pretty good record.)

I wanted to challenge myself for today's #septphotochallenge by finding something in my collection that wasn't Japanese (because I have plenty of that). So here's what I found! Any suggestions to broaden my Asian book horizons? #somethingforsept

It's been really interesting seeing how everyone interprets #minimalistcovers and it's been fun searching my own shelves to see what I have. After seeing other posts, I think I have more than I originally thought but I'll stick with the two I pulled this morning. #augustphotochallenge
