The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires: A Novel | Grady Hendrix
Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the '90s about a women's book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a blood-sucking fiend. Patricia Campbell had always planned for a big life, but after giving up her career as a nurse to marry an ambitious doctor and become a mother, Patricia's life has never felt smaller. The days are long, her kids are ungrateful, her husband is distant, and her to-do list is never really done. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a group of Charleston mothers united only by their love for true-crime and suspenseful fiction. In these meetings, they're more likely to discuss the FBI's recent siege of Waco as much as the ups and downs of marriage and motherhood. But when an artistic and sensitive stranger moves into the neighborhood, the book club's meetings turn into speculation about the newcomer. Patricia is initially attracted to him, but when some local children go missing, she starts to suspect the newcomer is involved. She begins her own investigation, assuming that he's a Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy. What she uncovers is far more terrifying, and soon she--and her book club--are the only people standing between the monster they've invited into their homes and their unsuspecting community.

By far the best Grady Hendrix in my opinion, so far I tried my best friends exorcism and how to sell a haunted house which I dnf‘ed. SBCGTVS romps along it‘s a fast pasted horror but not to scary or disturbing and not really gruesome until the end , a perfect 👌 Halloween 🎃 read & I thoroughly enjoyed it. More spooky 👻 reads please

Thank you @PuddleJumper , Team #Flerken, #HauntedShelf, #Spookoween, and @TheSpineView for encouraging more reading in a busy month!
I didn‘t reach my lofty goal of 6 books, but I got 1 book read that‘s been on my shelf for awhile, 1 book read for book club, & took a big bite out of Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix. I read enough of an ARC to write a review, & enjoyed an essay related to an art exhibit seen this month. +2 new authors to 🧡!

Turns out having 4 days of stomach flu is good for 1 thing: finally finishing some books for Team #Flerken!
I started this earlier in the month when I got my book tattoo. It was so good 4 hours of needles on my skin went fast. I ironically had to put it aside to read a book for book club. Maybe fortunately bc it is also a nice distraction for stomach flu. This book had me flipping pages fast and shouting No! F*c&! And Aah!

Patricia and her book club love reading murder mysteries and horror books. But her community starts to question that choice when she starts being suspicious of their new neighbor James Harris around the town‘s children. Stretched over three years of turmoil, accusations, Patricia is faced with keeping the peace or losing the life she‘s build. Definitely one to read if this is your genre but not my cup of tea

I hated this book. Everything made it sound like a dark comedy… so far from the truth.
Every single man in this book sucked.
For people who have read a ton of true crime, Patty and her friends did so many things wrong.
The book club was pretty negligible to the plot.
It dragged horribly in places.
The men were literally the worst.

I really liked this one! It was a page-turner with lots of twist and turns. I have seen in some other reviews people not liking the main female characters, but personally I loved them. I thought they were very well written as real people. They were frustrating sometimes, but they didn‘t seem helpless to me. Something I didn‘t like was the multiple SAs in the plot - they did not feel necessary, but just for shock, which I didn‘t like.

The pacing and quirky writing style was engaging. The treatment of the housewives in this novel was terrible and the men in this book ranged from irritating to downright disgusting. I can't say I enjoyed the multiple SAs in this book, but aside from that, the horror element was handled really well. The ending feels unsatisfying because the threat was dealt with but wasn't permanently ended. I still can't tell if the SA was *REALLY* necessary--

Doppoetry or if it was peppered in for shock value. Overall I enjoyed it but a lot of things I personally didn't care for.

I think it's very important to establish things like that in horror from the getgo (I am a huge horror fan but I also know how plenty of authors love to put shocking things for the shock value and use 'horror' as an excuse)
7mo
Doppoetry I also feel like the book would have been a lot more suspenseful if the reader hadn't known that the main antagonist was a vampire from the start but had learned it along with the MC. 7mo

There are a couple decades in between my two most recent favorite albums, and they are not remotely similar except both were clearly labors of love. I also enjoy albums where every song doesn't sound the same - there's a lot of variety in both of these.
Thanks for starting this @TieDyeDude - I'm always curious what people are listening to 🎶

merelybookish I am clearly not her demographic but I love Olivia Rodrigo. My daughter and I listen to this album a lot. 10mo
Billypar @merelybookish Yeah, I'm also a bit far from her demographic I'd say 😅 But I guess that speaks to how good of an album it is. The songs have been playing on repeat in my head for awhile. 10mo

Chrissyreadit I loved Arrested Development- and i should listen to Olivia Rodrigo and see what I think. 10mo
Billypar @KathyWheeler @BarbaraBB @Chrissyreadit I missed out on Arrested Development when they were popular but when I got to Tennessee I had one of those 'Ohhh... this song is them?!' moments. 10mo
Billypar @TieDyeDude I didn't see her SNL or Grammy's performances, but it wouldn't shock me if the studio versions are better. Vampire seems to me like a song you probably can't help overdoing live (and at karaoke for sure). 10mo
AmyG I just love her song Bad Idea, Right? She is awesome. (edited) 10mo
TheKidUpstairs Arrested Development is one of those bands that I totally forget just how great they are, and then have so much fun being reminded. What a great album. I only learned recently that Dionne Farris featured on People Everyday! 10mo

I ended my Goodreads Challenge with a book about vampires. The story is not what I expected. I guess I was a bit disappointed by that. It satisfied the criteria for a horror novel but I hated the husband more than I disliked the antagonist. Over all, the story was okay. So I enjoyed this and found the phrasing different making it a good read. It‘s not a typical vampire book and I really liked that aspect. It has that stepford wives perspective with a vampire in the mix… interesting and enjoyable… Although I would have enjoyed it more with some strong female attitude as it was more go along with the flow rather than take charge of the situation still enjoyable.

Reggie Oh man, I wanted to punch the husbands in here. Especially when he was like-apologize to him. 13mo

TLuvs I was "entertained" with this title up until around the half way point. The last few chapters have so throughly disgusted me with the extreme male chauvinistic behaviors, gas lighting/mental abuse, invalidating of the wives, condescending tones, and physical abuse. I had to step away and breathe for a little. I seriously don't know if I'll finish. Nor if I'll read anything from GH again. 1y

I couldn't relate to characters and I hated how husbands treated their wives. I think my problem with this book was that this was concentrating on housewives' every day problems and fights and not on vampires. This wasn't a horror story for my taste.

Ok...I'm sad to say I'm bailing on this one..but my reasoning is def a me thing!
The writing is great!! So great, in fact, the descriptions of certain scenes are making me sick 🤢
Hendrix can write a relatable, likeable character, a believable and lush setting..but his excellent writing makes his horror verrrrrrryy hard to stomach. I cringed, I gagged, and I only made it to page 75.

I would love to be part of a book club that picks monthly themes, rather than a specific book. I think it would be so interesting to chat about a broad theme within the framework of a bunch of books that handle that theme differently. Plus, its a great way to hear about more books! I don't have the social energy to start a book club, but if this exists and u know of it, please let me know 😅

BookmarkTavern What kind of themes? This sounds like a really cool idea? 2y
ShyBookOwl @ozma.of.oz I'm thinking more specific than a genre, but stuff u can know from the back cover and is broad enough to play out many ways. Like, set in a hidden/secret place, or deals with the loss of a parent, or takes place across 2 timelines or on 2 continents. I'm spit-balling, but that's where my head is at 2y
Soubhiville I have a bookclub like that. We mostly meet virtually, US central time zone. April we will be in person, but our May topic is “it‘s the end of the world as we know it.” Meeting on May 20th. If you‘re interested email me, magicbelly@gmail, we‘d love to have you attend a meeting and see if you‘d like to join us 🙂. 2y
See All 21 Comments
ShyBookOwl @ozma.of.oz Some of that is maybe too broad, but I think the idea would be to explore and learn about multiple books with one thing in common, through spoiler-free chats. That way, ppl can find more books in their wheelhouse or even expand their wheelhouse by encountering a theme they wouldn't normally gravitate towards 2y
ShyBookOwl @Soubhiville That's awesome! I probably couldn't attend anything in person as I'm in Ontario, Canada BUT super interested in virtual meetings! I'll email u 😊 thank you!! 2y

ShyBookOwl @Tamra Show & Tell is a great way of putting it! Book chat with a common theme to ground the convo 2y
Tamra @ShyBookOwl 👍🏾 2y
TEArificbooks I have a book club on Facebook where we get four prompts a month and you read two books that meet those prompts. Through out the month we talk about the prompts and what we are reading. At the end of the month we list the books we picked are entered into a drawing for a prize. 2y
marleed I love your monthly theme idea! 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag What a fun idea! The library I work at do something similar - staff talk about a couple of books they‘ve read and then open the floor up to whoever is turned up - often lovely conversations flow! 2y

This story really grows its characters into becoming strong women and breaking the 'house wife' stigma.

Understanding this book was set back in the 1990's, I'm glad that it showed those stereotypes in a way that demonstrates how terrible and demeaning they are, while still throwing a fun twist on it as these women go outside their comfort zones to protect their families and their community.
