Twelve Patients
Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital | Eric Manheimer
In the spirit of Oliver Sacks Awakenings and the TV series House, Dr. Eric Manheimer's TWELVE PATIENTS is a memoir from the Medical Director of Bellevue Hospital that uses the plights of twelve very different patients-from dignitaries at the nearby UN, to supermax prisoners from Riker's Island, to illegal immigrants, and Wall Street tycoons-to illustrate larger societal issues. Manheimer is not only the medical director of the country's oldest public hospital, but he is also a patient. As the book unfolds, the narrator is diagnosed with cancer, and he is forced to wrestle with the end of his own life even as he struggles to save the lives of others.

I thought this was good. He was able to sit down with some of these patients and talk to them and find out more about their backgrounds, so he provides more than the medical information about each one. He talks about their lives, and how they came to be in New York and in the hospital. Some of the patients were immigrants and some were prisoners from the nearby Rikers Prison, and there is more variety in addition. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin
Given that he also looks at the people‘s backgrounds, there is some politics thrown in, as well – some to do with the patients‘ countries of origin, some with the way the US handles immigration, and some with public health care in the US and the costs.

Late on my review for this one...probably not a good sign for the quality of it?

A high point was listening along to the audiobook as I read the physical copy, as I got to hear what Dr. Manheimer sounds like in real life. That was interesting to compare to his character on NBC‘s “New Amsterdam”. I felt it unnecessary to finish reading before tuning in to season 2.

The chapters were long and textbookish, making it hard to stick with.

Crazeedi I liked this book 5y
emilyhaldi Too bad... This has been sitting on my tbr shelf forever and I haven't felt motivated to pick it up 5y
Chelseabillups30 @emilyhaldi, I am not the be all end all of book reviews! I think you should still read it. The stories told within the pages were still interesting and engaging, it was just my opinion that it didn‘t come together well from beginning to end. You may feel differently when you read it! 5y
emilyhaldi Fair point, but I was already avoiding picking the book up for some reason 🤔 so I guess I just mean that your review doesn't further motivate me 🤣🤣 5y

The bad news: I have to return a book to the library I work @ tomorrow and I‘ve officially obtained my first Interlibrary Loan fees, I have not finished the book. 👎🏻📚😔

The good news, because of some harsh life circumstances, I have not started watching the latest season of New Amsterdam. When I went to check on if I could renew the aforementioned book, based off the real life New Amsterdam doctor was ready and waiting to be checked out! 💯

I didn‘t make it before the Season 2 premier, but still made it. This book in no way prepared me for the Season 2 premier of New Amsterdam. I did not find out who lived or died in that ambulance crash until I watched the show tonight. I will forever be haunted by “it‘s always my turn” and Max saying the days, “they‘re all long.”
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics This book is absolutely amazing on its own. I can see how it inspired New Amsterdam and why some amazing people wanted to turn it into a TV show. There are a lot of very important things in this book that we all need to hear in America. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 5y
GingerAntics This is a brilliant look into the American health care system, how we‘re all interconnected, reminders to keep a hold of our humanity, and the important message that children/the poor/immigrants/prisoners/doctors and nurses are people, too. #DrEricManheimer #TwelvePatients #NewAmsterdam #DamFam 5y

Not surprising in the least.
#DrEricManheimer #TwelvePatients #NewAmsterdam #DamFam #healthcare

I‘m trying to finish this before the New Amsterdam premiere on Tuesday night, but I‘m not sure I‘m going to make it.

Branwen I've been having TONS of healthcare related problems as of late, and until then I never realized how shitty this country's healthcare is. It's very disheartening, to say the least. 😞 5y
GingerAntics @Branwen that seems to be how it goes. You don‘t really need it until you need it, but then it‘s not there for you. I can‘t help but think if, as a country, we chose to value good health for all, how much cheaper things could be because everything would be check ups and preventative care and much less emergency care. 5y
Branwen @GingerAntics Yes, I absolutely agree. The prices for healthcare plans, if you're not getting coverage through the company you work for (and sometimes even if you are!), are outrageous. 5y
See All 8 Comments
GingerAntics @Branwen absolutely. Life saving meds are unattainable for most families. We‘ve got people in their 20‘s rationing insulin. If you look at our health care, the way we treat our sick, I don‘t understand how we can dare say this is the greatest country on earth. Every other first world nation takes care of their sick. 5y
Branwen @GingerAntics Yes, so true! It's very frustrating to think about. I just don't understand why we can't do right by our people. Especially when, as you said, the other first world nations get the job done. 5y
GingerAntics @Branwen I even found out that after WWII all of those first world nations were so grateful they all offered to put every American citizen forever on their systems and American lawmakers said, “no thanks, we can do better.” If this is better, I think I‘m using that word differently than they are. 5y
Branwen @GingerAntics ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Goddamn that makes me want to throw up. This country is such a joke sometimes. 😥 5y
GingerAntics @Branwen that was my reaction, too! Sadly, yeah I‘m totally serious. 5y

I think people are shocked by the number of highly skilled immigrants (legal or not) who come here and can‘t work in the fields they‘re trained in. I firmly believe they should be able to show their credential or be able to call the school and then just take the licensing exam here. It‘s amazing the number of immigrant students I work with at work that are getting a second degree because their old credentials just don‘t count for some reason.

Gezemice Yeah, nuts. What a waste of talent and education. (edited) 5y
GingerAntics @Gezemice agreed. Especially when you think of how much their families sacrificed in order for them to be able to go the first time. 5y

It‘s hard to imagine what life is like for average, everyday Mexican citizens. I don‘t think, as Americans, we have considered how NAFTA hurt Mexican farmers or how life as it is now, in Mexico is a type of prison people find themselves in when they only thing they ever did was be born. This was a stunning, beautiful, eye opening passage. This explains why Trump‘s plan will NEVER work.

GingerAntics I think it also shows why Trump‘s claim that NAFTA hurts American farmers is an absolute slap in the face to the farmers of our trade partners in North America. #thismanhasgottogo 5y
Butterfinger That last sentence you highlighted hits it square on the head. US is only hurting ourselves. 5y
See All 11 Comments
GingerAntics @Butterfinger but we‘re not. We‘re hurting Mexican citizens that are just trying to survive now because of our policies. It‘s hard to post the entire thing because it‘s like a page and a half, but it is so powerful and it shows just how interdependent we all are. (edited) 5y
Butterfinger @GingerAntics in the long run, all we are doing is breeding hate. We won't have anyone to have as trade partners. Your quote was how the man's business was slowly being ruined because of economy because of us. Shutting our borders will hurt us too. 5y
Butterfinger I should not have used the word "only". I did that without thinking. It hurts all. Not just us. Forgive me. 5y
GingerAntics @Butterfinger I get your point. We‘re doing a lot of damage and we don‘t care. Some how people don‘t see the damage being done to our children and those who don‘t have any power. I think that‘s the hardest to accept. The hate is just disturbing. There is just so much hate. 5y
Scochrane26 1) I just spent the weekend in pigeon forge, TN & saw several stores selling trump merch. I realized that I‘ve never seen presidential merch like that for any other pres. 2) I work w/ a lot of kids whose parents are undocumented, & it‘s very sad & frustrating when their anxiety goes up because they‘re worried about deportations & who they‘re going to live with. I shouldn‘t have elementary kids in therapy with those kind of worries. 5y
Scochrane26 3) this passage explains a lot about why people risk being undocumented. They may not make much in U.S. but at least they have jobs. 5y
GingerAntics @Scochrane26 I completely agree with you on every point. His merch and how it‘s sold is so weird and his effect on even small children is proof of how inhumane and unpresidential he is. This book is in no way about immigration, but it makes wonderful points about it. This book was written in 2012, but I think it‘s safe to say Manheimer did NOT vote for Trump. 5y
GingerAntics @Scochrane26 I wish I could post a while page or two. This guy actually mentions how NAFTA put most Mexican farmers out of business because it prevented them from competing with American farmers. It makes the whole BS about how American farmers are being hurt by NAFTA so we need something new he‘s going to rescue farmers with just more proof that Trump has no idea what he‘s talking about. 5y

A former Chief Medical Officer of Bellevue gives a small glimpse into the world of this flagship public hospital through the stories of 12 patients who passed through its doors. These are fascinating and absorbing individual stories, and the insight I to the hospital is also very interesting.

New Amsterdam (the TV show) is very very very loosely based on this book.

My primary criticism is that it can be hard to follow the sequencing👇

ScientistSam When he goes into flashback mode. This might be an issue with the ebook if the physical book offsets the flashbacks from the current narrative. 5y

I wanted to love this book because my husband and I have been watching New Amsterdam and it was based off the book...but I‘m really not a big non-fiction fan! Part of the book was interesting and I really wanted to find out what happened to a patient...part of it I found myself skimming and wondering why each chapter was so long. I‘m glad I read it, but I‘m glad it wasn‘t any longer than it was!
