A day late (and a dollar short) for #weirdwordwednesday — but wanted to share anyway! I just finished the tagged book about the Dutch colony that first settled NYC. This section mentioned some of the Dutch words that were mutated into the English language and are still part of our lexicon 400 years later. As a word nerd, this type of stuff fascinates me!
@CBee

Ruthiella I nerd out on that kind of thing too! 😅 3w
BarbaraBB So funny to scroll and come upon words in my own language! Two very old fashioned and ordinary names in Dutch are Jan and Kees. That‘s what they called the Americans back in those days. Hence the American word Yankees! Just saying 😀 3w
Amiable @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB I love seeing how languages merge and intermingle! 3w
CBee @BarbaraBB I had NO idea!! How cool is that? 3w
CBee @Amiable thanks for sharing 😊 3w

Fascinating account of New Netherland, the Dutch colony on the island of Manhattan that predated the Pilgrims. After the English took control of the colony in 1664, the narrative shifted in favor of the “victor” and much of the Dutch history was lost. This book draws on a research project at the New York State Library that included the translation of thousands of original documents from the 17th century.

ferskner Oh wow, I hadn't heard of this book at all! Thanks for the rec. 3w
Amiable @ferskner This book was published 20 years ago. He just came out with a new one that picks up the history of NYC in 1664 after the English take over the colony: 3w
ferskner Oooooo adding that one too! 3w

It‘s so good to see these old friends. They are a wonderful historical fiction trilogy about NYC when it was still Nieuw Amsterdam. I really loved them.

P.S. I just looked up this series and there‘s a 4th book! City of Promise. Guess what‘s going on my wishlist? And then time for a reread. Nice.

I didn‘t make it before the Season 2 premier, but still made it. This book in no way prepared me for the Season 2 premier of New Amsterdam. I did not find out who lived or died in that ambulance crash until I watched the show tonight. I will forever be haunted by “it‘s always my turn” and Max saying the days, “they‘re all long.”

GingerAntics This book is absolutely amazing on its own. I can see how it inspired New Amsterdam and why some amazing people wanted to turn it into a TV show. There are a lot of very important things in this book that we all need to hear in America. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 6y
GingerAntics This is a brilliant look into the American health care system, how we‘re all interconnected, reminders to keep a hold of our humanity, and the important message that children/the poor/immigrants/prisoners/doctors and nurses are people, too. #DrEricManheimer #TwelvePatients #NewAmsterdam #DamFam 6y

Not surprising in the least.

I‘m trying to finish this before the New Amsterdam premiere on Tuesday night, but I‘m not sure I‘m going to make it.

Branwen I've been having TONS of healthcare related problems as of late, and until then I never realized how shitty this country's healthcare is. It's very disheartening, to say the least. 😞 6y
GingerAntics @Branwen that seems to be how it goes. You don‘t really need it until you need it, but then it‘s not there for you. I can‘t help but think if, as a country, we chose to value good health for all, how much cheaper things could be because everything would be check ups and preventative care and much less emergency care. 6y
Branwen @GingerAntics Yes, I absolutely agree. The prices for healthcare plans, if you're not getting coverage through the company you work for (and sometimes even if you are!), are outrageous. 6y

GingerAntics @Branwen absolutely. Life saving meds are unattainable for most families. We‘ve got people in their 20‘s rationing insulin. If you look at our health care, the way we treat our sick, I don‘t understand how we can dare say this is the greatest country on earth. Every other first world nation takes care of their sick. 6y
Branwen @GingerAntics Yes, so true! It's very frustrating to think about. I just don't understand why we can't do right by our people. Especially when, as you said, the other first world nations get the job done. 6y
GingerAntics @Branwen I even found out that after WWII all of those first world nations were so grateful they all offered to put every American citizen forever on their systems and American lawmakers said, “no thanks, we can do better.” If this is better, I think I‘m using that word differently than they are. 6y
Branwen @GingerAntics ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Goddamn that makes me want to throw up. This country is such a joke sometimes. 😥 6y
GingerAntics @Branwen that was my reaction, too! Sadly, yeah I‘m totally serious. 6y

I think people are shocked by the number of highly skilled immigrants (legal or not) who come here and can‘t work in the fields they‘re trained in. I firmly believe they should be able to show their credential or be able to call the school and then just take the licensing exam here. It‘s amazing the number of immigrant students I work with at work that are getting a second degree because their old credentials just don‘t count for some reason.

Gezemice Yeah, nuts. What a waste of talent and education. (edited) 6y
GingerAntics @Gezemice agreed. Especially when you think of how much their families sacrificed in order for them to be able to go the first time. 6y

Dear America,
Please remember this, too. Please don‘t lose your humanity. You are better than this, America. We are better than this.
