This was a quick read. YA, it features three tales of families seeking safety in three different timelines, from three different countries: Nazi Germany, Communist Cuba, and the war in Syria. Immigration is a hot topic, with violent, white supremacist right wing fantasies. We all have a right to live a life free from oppression and violence. This book asks us to see the humanity and worth in our fellow human beings.

#SchoolSpirit #Memories This is one of my favorite cookbooks- my sister-in-law was Cuban and taught me how to cook some of the recipes from this cookbook.

Dialogue and story are okay but I‘m more invested than I thought I‘d be in finding out how these seemingly unconnected storylines come together.

Three stories of 3 different refugees in 3 different times: 1930s, 1994, and 2015. But they all have connections that tie the stories together…I like how all his book covers have dramatic red-white-black theme

Written in poetry this is a beautiful, haunting story of the wars fought in Cuba to gain independence from Spain. The main character is Rosa a slave turned nurse who hides in the countryside helping all who cross her path regardless of allegiance. At the moment though it was Silvia a young girl escaped from the (first) ‘re concentration ‘ camps after all her family died of starvation or disease who might stay with me longest

The Pros: explores a setting & events & POV I was unfamiliar with (and should), in verse which is appealing to me. The Cons: if there weren‘t section breaks for the different wars, I would not have realized time was passing (maybe that‘s on purpose?) and I felt that Lt Death was unresolved. I still wondered if he would pop up again in the end. Still, glad to read it and would recommend. Newbery Honor, Pura Belpre Award Winner
