This is such a good lil‘ mystery I read it twice (once in English a few years back, and now in the original Danish)! I do feel like a significant amount gets lost in translation, but not enough to impact the overall plot and enjoyment thereof.
Danish is my first language, yet one I rarely read in. So far, this one‘s been worth all the effort it took to get it in the original, though, as so much of the linguistic humor did not survive translation (I read the US version in 2022).
If my mom has ever regretted raising a reader, I think it might‘ve been the moment where I asked her to go to the grocery store an hour from her house and get me books on sale, then mail them across the Atlantic (5th one‘s coming, too). 😂
This was my #doublespin for @TheAromaofBooks
I really liked this twisty, slow burn mystery and have book 2 on hold.
Late to the party again... Only now learned about it. Why wasn't I tagged, Andrew?!🤨 Hmpfff... 😂

Joining #JoyousJanuary #readathon - my goal: to read as much as possible, as always.
Maybe finish the tagged book. But no pressure.

First book in a series set in Denmark, two police officers are assigned a case where a young women has symbols curved into her face. I thought it was OK but not enough to continue the series.

This was a very fast paced detective novel that had me guessing until the very end. I was interested to see how the plot unfolded and who was involved in the murder. It was an interesting story with lots of twists and turns. There were some aspects of the book I thought were a bit over done, but it was entertaining all the same.

Debut mystery/thriller, first in a series. Publisher superlatives aside, this was a pretty predictable whodunnit. Set in Copenhagen and featuring police detectives Jeppe Koner and Annette Werner who are rushing to solve a couple of grisly murders that appear to be.based on a draft manuscript. Good premise, but the perpetrator is revealed too early and the the remaining plot limps along to the end. I‘ll try her next in hopes for more complexity.

Busy work week as well as plumbing problems so laundromat visit, paper dishes- finely resolved after 5 days. Wading through the piles of dirty dishes & laundry…
Finally posting!
Finished 5 books, bailed on 1( Death with Dostoevsky), still reading 2, Dear Reader & The Tenant.
Look at all this #birthdaylove that came my way! I love it all, but the best are Diane‘s gorgeous handcrafted cards. Thank you for your generosity my friend- it was such fun to unpack!
The first in the Kørner and Werner series
Thank you Joey for the book!
An excellent first book. A woman is murdered in the apartment below Esther, and the crime scene is just like the murder mystery Esther is writing. Jeppe and Anette are unlikely partners trying to solve the case. I'll definitely be reading the next book

The author has a third book coming out, and it sounds intriguing, so I wanted to read the first and second books in the series. This wasn‘t what I was expecting. It is a good mystery, extremely dark, but the book is overall so depressing, that I almost didn't finish it. I can't say that I really like the detectives, nor do they like each other, but there were, surprisingly, some really good laughs. I‘ll continue the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Excellent murder mystery- great cast of characters - this is not a thriller - reads like a crime drama - follow police as they investigate the crime, the characters and plot are well written so it held my interest the entire time - no parts were boring or uninteresting to me. Highly recommend if you enjoy murder mystery (not a cozy or thriller) -

1. green (but love purples, reds, oranges - all of them!)
2. No - the cover of a book (while nice to look at, and some are nicer than others) has no impact on reading a book.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was a really good and gritty Scandinavian noir. Really looking forward to more in the series. The audio narration was fantastic as well.
Well what can I said it was a crazy thrilling ride. I quite enjoyed it,
Taking. Break from my Victorian cozy mysteries on page 62 and so far it‘s ok..
This is between a so-so and a pick for me. I felt like there was crucial information that the investigators just never followed up on and made some poor decisions. I liked the first half or so of the book and ended up skimming the last bit. Not bad but not the greatest I‘ve read. 🌟🌟🌟
2021 Reads continued....
I usually don't get on very well with translated novels. Tend to find the rhyme of the writing gets lost in the translation, however really enjoyed this new Danish crime novel.
My Sunday ritual... trying to keep focused on this book so I can finish it soon! 😀
I wavered on how to rate this one! Some of the characters at times make non-logical decisions which can be confounding. But, I always looked forward to reading it and was curious as to how it would all fall together.
Saw this and thought of you @DGRachel

I thought this Nordic noir mystery was fantastic! The characters, the plot, and the twists were all engaging. Looking forward to book 2! https://amysbookreviews.com/2020/11/30/the-tenant-by-katrine-engberg-review/
Book 136
I listened to this available audibook that I'd recently seen on social media. The killer copies a murder from an unpublished manual by carving the face of the victim before death. All elements are there but not remarkable.
To be fair, this book coincided with a horrible reading slump so I've chipped away at it for weeks and that likely made the reveal less satisfying than it normally might have been. There were some intriguing plot points, but the author had to go out of her way to retroactively make the pieces fit rather than having an organic "aha!" moment. I also wish I'd listened on audio bc I just know I butchered the pronunciation of names and places ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Children who grow up in orphanages and institutions sometimes refer to those homes as a nightmare factory.”
“A killer who‘s grown up in an orphanage?” Anette couldn‘t help curling her lip at the word.
“Maybe.”
“An orphan, who grows up to become a knife murderer? Tell me, are we in the middle of some fucking crime novel, or what?”
“I don‘t know, Werner. Is that what we are?”
It's all gone a bit meta.
Jeppe glanced down at the fallen flower petals and pigeon droppings in the gravel. At the moment, the combination seemed like a fitting image of Copenhagen: a mosaic of flowers and shit.
No one is going to hire Engberg to advertise Copenhagen as a tourist destination based on this! (Although thinking about it, Rebus worked for Edinburgh...)
This was so much better than I expected it would be! It‘s a detective story set in Copenhagen. Edge of your seat good. The audio is fantastic! Also, if you use Audible, consider switching to Libro.fm. They partner with local bookstores. Amazon doesn‘t need your money, but these small businesses do! Especially now.
A young woman is killed in her Copenhagen apartment and an unusual connection to her death is discovered. There are some good twists in here and some satisfying complexity, but it‘s too slow to get started and there is an anti-feminist tone in places that I didn‘t like. Between pick and so-so for me.

The Tenant by Katrine Engberg. Just finished this and it was a good mystery but not much of a thriller for me. A young woman is murdered in a building with only four tenants. There is a unique mark carved into her face. Who is responsible? What does the carving mean?
My reading companions for the day. 💙🐾❤️🐾📖
Wandering around Logan looking for the perfect addition to this 4hr flight. This little number caught my eye 🤓 let‘s hope it‘s as good as it sounds 📚
A murder that is stolen straight from an authors unpublished manuscript! Super cool premise on this one! At times, I could have skimmed, but otherwise a cool read!
Spending some time with this egalley this morning ☕️. Finally hit the halfway mark 😝!
Finished! TBH, I have mixed feelings about this one. Once more we have a murdered girl, found by an old man on his way to throw out his garbage. There are so many little nuances that I ended up missing (as the reveal at the end made me realize), which I feel is a good thing but the main cop guy was *so annoying*, it's hard to really recommend this with a thumbs up 🤔🤔
3/5 ⭐ I think I went into this with really high expectations, so this was just an okay read for me. Perhaps if I hadn't been lured in by the buzz and discovered it on my own I would have enjoyed it more. This was entertaining and I read it quickly, but it didn't wow me.
Oh boy, not keeping to my tbr 😆😆 but as long as I get 5 books in, I'll consider it a win. This is another book we just got at work a few days ago so I figured I'd read it. The cover looked cool, that green really says spooky, and it's my off day so maybe I'll finish it 🤓

This one started out slow but I'm glad I stuck with it. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, there was another twist in the story. I enjoyed the side story of Detective Korner and look forward to seeing what happens to him as the series continues. The only negative thing I'd have to say is the amount of exclamations during normal conversations. I don't know if it was because it was translated but it was a little annoying.
