Lockwood & Co. the Creeping Shadow
Lockwood & Co. the Creeping Shadow | Jonathan Stroud
After leaving Lockwood & Co. at the end of "The Hollow Boy, " Lucy is a freelance operative, hiring herself out to agencies that value her ever-improving skills. One day she is pleasantly surprised by a visit from Lockwood, who tells her he needs a good Listener for a tough assignment. Penelope Fittes, the leader of the giant Fittes Agency wants them--and only them--to locate and remove the Source for the legendary Brixton Cannibal. They succeed in their very dangerous task, but tensions remain high between Lucy and the other agents. Even the skull in the jar talks to her like a jilted lover. What will it take to reunite the team? Black marketeers, an informant ghost, a Spirit Cape that transports the wearer, and mysteries involving Steve Rotwell and Penelope Fittes just may do the trick. But, in a shocking cliffhanger ending, the team learns that someone has been manipulating them all along. . . .

What a way to not just start but end a book!

Tension is running high from the start of the book and Stroud did a fantastic job of mixing in wit, humor, fantasy, mystery and suspenseful moments all throughout. I'm actually a bit upset at that surprise ending on this one because I didn't see it coming 😂 but I'm already off to go find the next and last book of the series.

The dynamics between the characters changed so much in this book compared to the previous ones in this series. The author is amazing at making you feel exactly the way he wants you to. The hairs on the back of your neck raise when they are supposed to, your heart constricts and bleeds along with the main character Lucy's. The funny banter is still there even though the tone of the book is more serious. And I loved every single word!

It is great to be able to read each book in a series without having to wait for the next one to release. I am onto book number 4!

The characters really grew on me and this 4th book was the best so far. I jumped straight into the final (audio)book.

Bookgoil I love this series! 5y
tessavi @Bookgoil It didn't start as strong as the Bartimaes books but I'm enjoying this series! 5y
Bookgoil I feel like the first book really got good at the end with the Red Room tho! 5y

The fourth Lockwood & Co. book is more about the relationships between the characters, and the mechanics of the ghost problem. I found it to be more 'grown-up' than the last ones for these reasons, and enjoyed it very much. There's only one book left in the series, I think.

1. I‘m really enjoying the Lockwood & Co. series on audiobook.
2. My Dad had a nickname that only he called me but I prefer to leave it to the past. A friend called me “Lor” and I hated it.
3. Breadsticks!
4. I want to stay home and read.
5. Only English. I used to know Spanish.

I love this series! This book steps it up with some bigger reveals about the Problem which starts to connect events across the books. I'll be getting book 5 off the library asap. Pretty creepy stuff for #middlegrade though. Not sure it would have worked for me at that age. So fun now though! #mommyreads #ghosts #detectives

Done! Yay!

I'm not sure if it was me hitting a series slump (I'm not a big series reader) or the book but, while I was and still am very interested to see where this is going, reading this took months and felt like work. Hopefully the next book in the series picks up.

Kicking off my first evening of vacation by eating ice cream at 11 pm.

Also, apparently I take all my cat photos with this book. Maybe I'll finally finish it soon and can stop with the endless progress shots. Maybe.

I sped through this fourth installment and it did NOT disappoint!! I feel like everything is starting to come together for the next and final book. I'm glad things are being resolved in reasonable ways. I love how everything is so intertwined that you can go way back to the beginning and find clues.

My two pre-vacation goals: clean and read. I would really like to finish these two and Eliza and Her Monsters before I leave. I don't want partially finished books hanging over my head on vacation! ?

Also, I really love the kitty reflection in the shiny library book cover which is why I didn't retake the photo to add Eliza. It seemed fitting for his face to be over the title "The Creeping Shadow."

Trying to start what feels like my millionth book of the weekend. Grr book slumps, especially when I actually have time to read! Can't complain too much, though, because the weather is gorgeous and my husband took the girls hiking so I have a peaceful morning. Here's hoping Lockwood & Co. can break my slump and make a great day even better!

#MayBookFlowers Day 6: #SupernaturalMysteries - this new series by Jonathan Stroud has given his Bartimaeus trilogy a run for its money, at least in my book. I have fallen in love with the mystery and ghost-busting elements of this series.

Honestly, this series is not THAT amazing. The characters never seem to reach any resolution, the plot kind of meanders. And yet! Somehow I finish each book and immediately want to read the next one. Weird.

ShansMousey They are very addicting. I do like The Bartimaeus Trilogy better than Lockwood and Co. I feel Lockwood and Co while a fun read is a very safe book series. Doesn't take too many risks, but is just entertaining enough to keep you going. 8y
brandymuses I still haven't found the motivation to read this one. Maybe I'm done with this series. 8y
meichner87 @brandymuses Yeah, I might be done after this one too. The characters just seem so static. 8y
meichner87 @SqueakGirl I still haven't read the Bartimaeus books! That's a good point about Lockwood being just interesting enough. 8y
ShansMousey @meichner87 I highly recommend The Bartimaeus Trilogy. I reread it all the time as a young teen. I feel it takes a lot more risks than Lockwood and Co and the world building pulls you in. Plus I feel like it makes an interesting foil to the Harry Potter Series which was at its height when Bartimaeus came out. 8y

I had a British coworker who discovered that "queuing theory" is a real thing one night while we were working, so I made my dad (a statistician) text me a picture of his bookshelf full of queuing theory books. My coworker was SO HAPPY. Anyway, that's what this quote reminds me of. I also like jokes about British people and lines.

My favorite Halloween tradition is reading the newest Lockwood & Co. book. I need Jonathan Stroud's to keep this series going forever! For me, reading these books is kind of like riding a rollercoaster because they make me so happy and so scared at the same time. I think I had a crazy grin on my face for this entire book.

I hope this series never ends! There are four books and they're all amazing. Each book manages to provide answers while creating still more questions.

And now I'm left with thinking the source of the Problem may have sinister origins...

These are a must read: spooky, funny, action-packed, and full of intrigue. Stroud is a fantastic writer.

Lucy Carlyle & Co. return for a spectacular series of ghost-busting adventures in this fourth installment, armed with swords, magnesium flares, and, of course, liberal doses of sarcasm (still the best weapon against ghosts, naturally). Highly recommend if you're looking for a fall read that's as entertaining and witty as it is adventurous & creepy! ★★★★☆.
