How did that manage the tone switch between bizarre, creepy and profound, repeatedly?! I can certainly see why it was adapted for film, though I'm a little leery of actually viewing it to see whether they were successful or what they cut. Mr. Teatime is a sociopath that wigged me out, Susan remains epic, and I love any story with the Discworld's Death.

I love all the Discworld Death arc, and I‘d say he or Susan make a great match for today‘s prompt for #littensdressedinblood! I know the tagged is a Christmas book, but I might rewatch the miniseries anyway.

MidnightBookGirl I started this series, but I should return to it. 3y

Soubhiville This is such a fun book! I love the way it mocks Christmas and also pulls other fairytales in. Teatime is such a good villain; in some ways I found him scarier than Pratchett‘s other baddies, but also he‘s ridiculous. If you haven‘t seen the movie rendition, it‘s also a lot of fun. 4y

Soubhiville Also, why is the idea of huge collections of teeth particularly scary/gross when I‘m not usually a squeamish person? Anyone else feel that way? 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ll admit, this one took awhile to get me sucked into the story, lots of separate stories...and it wasn‘t until they started to come together a bit more that it got really page turning for me. Loved all the poking at and examining Christmas and traditions and belief. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Soubhiville I loved the boogeyman...who ended up collecting teeth to protect the children....surprising twist for me.🤷‍♀️ 4y
Gezemice It had me at “HO.HO.HO”. 😁 I totally loved the small time god creatures, like the “oh God” of Hangovers, and particularly the Cheerful Fairy, whom you had to keep entertained otherwise she cried. And Hex‘s error messages cracked me up. +++ Divide By Cucumber Error. Reinstall Universe And Reboot. +++ And rebooting involved kicking it. Genius. Also, it needed the FTB enabled 😂 (edited) 4y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was a big put off by that (the boogeyman). It did not make too much sense to me. Although Pratchett is not known for sensible plots. The humor and the characters are so much fun. 4y
IndyHannaJones I listen to this book every year on Audible as one of my Xmas traditions! 4y
BookmarkTavern This is the first one I ever read, and it hooked me for life. It‘s still in the top three of my favorites. The conversation between Susan and Death toward the end about believing in the little lies is probably my favorite scene in Discworld. ❤️ 4y
khooliha A lot of these middle ones are blurred together from my first, feverish Discworld read, so I'm really enjoying the half-unearthing process this reread is forcing me to do. Take this one! I remembered about half of the major set pieces (how can you forget the Maul?) and the Christmas-y vibe. I absolutely LOVED it on this read! I've loved it enough to decide to make it a seasonal tradition. 4y
khooliha I get thinking the boogeyman is kind of creepy, but it's basically just done what Death has - gotten invested in the beings it interacts with. It just also had to deal with modernization in a way Death will never have to. 4y
khooliha I really like that there are no repercussions for the smaller actions Death takes, like saving the little match girl. People like Albert and Susan keep saying you can't just -do- certain things, like save everybody, provide for everybody, but you can. Death knows it, even if people don't believe it. It feels very related to the big lies that make us human. 4y
khooliha @ozma.of.oz It's so good! That conversation is an all time classic. 4y
BookmarkTavern @khooliha Right? Like, what I love about that conversation is that it could be taken so cynically, justice and mercy are all lies. But, BUT. Here is Death, basically saying that by us believing in these things, these big almost-unattainable things, we make them as real as the Hogfather. As real as ourselves. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ozma.of.oz yes, such a great conversation. 4y

Gezemice I am still re-reading it. I did not remember much, just that Death was playing the Hogfather. HO HO HO. Hilarious! It seems most people have dropped off but I am continuing even if I don‘t read all as most are re-reads for me. 5y
Gezemice @Catherine_Willoughby He is a great character, the way he tries to understand humans but never truly does. And that he has a house full of cats. And a granddaughter. So fun! 5y
julesG @Gezemice my problem with the challenge is, as soon as I've posted the new book or discussion post, I forget to post my own thoughts. 🙈 5y
Gezemice @julesG not too late! 5y
julesG @Gezemice I know. But by the time I get round, I'm at that point where I can only add "I agree" most of the time. ?? 5y

I read this between Dec 21 & Jan 2. I gave it about 3.5 stars on Good Reads. Whilst I enjoyed the bulk of the books, I found the scenes with the wizards rather dull. It also took me so long to read this one because I was in such a reading slump at the end of the year. I finished 2019 with having read 136 books and my GR goal was 125. This year my goal is 104 books.

#adventrecommends day 19! (I‘m playing catch-up thanks to visits).

If you‘ve never read Discworld before then I wouldn‘t recommend starting here (there are flowcharts online as to where would be best to start), but this is a favourite holiday read about Death filling in for a missing Father Christmas, and about the importance of belief.
