My mom raised me to believe. It was never about real VS fictional. It was about the freedom to believe in the fantastic and all the wonders of fantasy without restrictions.

Even with the boogieman, I was never told that the boogieman didn't exist...my mom told me “how not to show fear, to be brave and the boogieman would have no power to taunt.“ Or my mom would gave me something “mystical“ to repeal the bully 🪄😉💝.

👇

AnnCrystal While I wasn't raised with the original books, this Movie has gone directly onto my all-time favorites list, a genuine gem that is the definition of my childhood upbringing 📚🎬💝.

Pure imagination is magical and powerful.

Believe!

Despite being in print since 1955, I hadn‘t read this until I found it on a booklist about "radical acceptance." What does Harold have to do with this? React, don't panic. Accept things out of your control. Problem-solve with simple solutions. Plus, Harold and his crayon have a trusting relationship. Sometimes one takes the lead, sometimes the other. Even though their walk has mild-scary moments, it ultimately brings them home. #dw2020reads

Harold and the Purple Crayon takes readers through a journey of a toddler who‘s magically using this purple crayon to create and draw stuff. This leads him through many adventures! I actually remember this book being read to me many many many years ago by a teacher who then challenged us to draw with a purple crayon. I think teachers could even take it a step further and have students close their eyes and draw the imagery that comes to mind!

Keishla.O This book looks really interesting. I love the open possibilities of what the child can create with his purple crayon and where that may take the story! It kind of reminds me of that Spongebob episode with the big pencil lol 5y

Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson won the National Parenting Publications Book Awards is a F picture book about a little boy and his adventures with a purple crayon. Using his imagination he draws with his crayon and everything comes to life. I would absolutely use this as a S in the classroom and read it the same week I read the day the crayons 🖍quit. ESOL strategy 6, continually monitor students‘ comprehension.#UCAE3414SP20

Harold and the Purple Crayon is a F picture book about a little boy and his adventures. The book, along with the illustrations, show how one night Harold decides to go on an adventure with his purple crayon. Whatever he draws with his crayon suddenly comes to life and he can use, play, eat, etc. whatever he decided to draw. This book could be told in a storytelling(S) or even partner reading(PR) followed by the lesson plan.

morganhillman http://readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactives/doodle-splash... the UDL 4.2, optimize access to tools and assistive technologies, is met as the students use the doodle splash tool to create their own drawings of the story. The EL 6, continually monitor students‘ comprehension, is met as the students are creating their own drawings. The teacher will be able to see who is comprehending the story by looking at their doodles 7y
Laura.S @morganhillman this book looks so cute and sounds like it would entertain the young kids! I love when authors take ordinary things, such as crayons, and bring them to life in books. 7y

Harold and the Purple Crayon is a fiction fantasy book, that takes the reader on a story of a four year old boy named Harold. One night Harold takes a walk in the moonlight, and draws the world around him on his way home. I believe this book is great for RT because it tells a story and the story takes you on an adventure.

AlexaDP While the book is a little long, I think it it is a great story for IR. Students who love to read will love this book and it aligns with ESOL strategy 8, using the book to teach direct instruction. Also, UDL3.2 highlighting patterns, critical features, big ideas. 7y
AlexaDP Here is a discussion guide for the book on scholastic‘s website, I think this will help students with critical thinking and get students talking about what happened in the book. http://www.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=32380 #ucflae3414f17 7y

So, my daughter hates children's books. I think it overwhelms her to be read to and shown pictures (idk why....since she watches tv). She does like if I read her poetry or nursery rhyme books. I want to try audio books for her. I think she might like them. Suggestions for audio books with simple stories? She usually prefers deep voices and hates shrill or high pitched voices or sounds (which tends to rule out anything made for kids). #audiobooks

Vexingcircumstance She's special needs and non-verbal but seems to comprehend more than the average two year old. She's never liked tv shows or movies made for her age. It's like she gets bored. She loves Supergirl and Brave and Jurassic World. And Walking With Dinosaurs. She likes Doctor Who fairly often as well. Sherlock occasionally. 8y
Vexingcircumstance Oh and she likes shows and movies with zombies. Zombies, Superheroes and dinosaurs seem to be her favorites lol. 8y
See All 8 Comments
Vexingcircumstance @LauraBeth I'll see if the library has them and the cd. They might. Kids stuff is super hit or miss with her. I'd be scared to buy it without testing it first lol. 8y
LauraBeth @Vexingcircumstance when my daughter wakes up I'll check her room because she may still have this as well as some others (that she outgrew years ago). If I can find them I'll be happy to mail to you 😀 8y
Vexingcircumstance @LauraBeth okay that would be great. Just lmk. 8y
Reviewsbylola My two year old is not a big reader. If she does want to sit down and read a book, it's just to flip the pages. 😂 I like the audiobook idea. 8y
readinginthedark My son is a big fan of Roald Dahl books on audio. There are different narrators depending on which you choose. And the first thing I read him as a baby was Pride and Prejudice, which he loved. Audiobooks of classics often have narrators with calmer voices! Those might be good ones to try! 8y
