Today while I worked in the kitchen, I listened to a few Sherlock Holmes stories and to chapter 36 of David Copperfield. I‘m worried things are going to go badly for him again.
I put up more pumpkin, which includes a good amount of frozen purée, treats/food for Luthien, pasta baked in a pumpkin, a jar of pickled pumpkin cubes, roasted seeds, and pumpkin sourdough rising.

I feel like we get two seasons in one. First we get autumn, the leaves changing color with beautiful scenery and then fall, which happened last night. All the leaves on my tree made a pact counted to three and dropped. I‘m playing catch up #WhatTheDickens My #HyggeHour will be spent on my couch reading tagged book drinking cocoa.
Happy Saturday morning! I‘m starting a quiet Saturday morning with breakfast casserole and coffee while I catch up on the last few chapters of David Copperfield for October.
I have lots of things to work on at home today since I‘ve been gone the last few weekends, but I plan to listen to lots of audio and fit in some print reading for the Dewey‘s Readathon as well.

Thoughts on September‘s section? We have been introduced to a wide range of characters both friend and foe in David Copperfield. We meet David, his mother, his aunt, his stepfather, Peggotty, Mr. Peggotty, Emily, Steerforth, the Micawber family, and Mr Dick. All leave an impression on David and us readers, who stood out, what did you notice? Favorite villain, favorite character?
Finally starting David Copperfield for #WhatTheDickens (since I finished Demon Copperhead a couple days ago)—and the Preface immediately reminded me of just how much I love Dickens!! Also, I have discovered that I used a purple pen for my underlines and notes when I read this in grad school 😂
#WhatTheDickens All are welcome
Sept parts 1 - 5
Oct parts 6 - 10
Nov parts 11 - 15
Dec parts 15 -20

Finished Chunkster number 2! I enjoyed some storylines better than others, but loved all of the endearing characters…and some of the not-so-endearing ones, too! I‘m looking at you, Uriah Heep! I think I his one will warrant a reread at some point!

In the home stretch for this #chunksterchallenge2024 read. Things are finally catching up with Uriah Heep…when I read about him, I can‘t help picturing The Shermanator from the American Pie movie. 😂

I listened to the audio and most of it was not actually interesting enough to listen to. So, I missed most of it. I found many names caught my attention, though, for some reason. So, I seemed to notice when names were mentioned, but didn‘t pay enough attention to what actually was happening. I did catch a bit more of what happened at the end. And I did read a wikipedia summary maybe 1/3 of the way through the book. Cont in comments...
Chapter 32: The Beginning of a Long Journey
I get why Mr. Pegotty and Mrs. Steerforth we‘re at cross purposes— he only wanted Emily respectably married and she only wanted Steerforth back home single. But what was Dartle‘s motivation to be so angry at David for even bringing Mr. Pegotty?
Also, this illustration leads me to believe I have once again missed the Christ imagery. #buddyread #readalong
Chapter 28: Mr. Micawber‘s Gsuntlet
What I like most about Dickens is the subtle things. The first time David runs into Micawber unexpectedly at Canterbury, he‘s embarrassed that he‘ll reveal details about David‘s early life. The second time, in London, that‘s far enough into his past that he doesn‘t even think of it — even if he‘s not ready to forgive and forget with Miss Murdstone.
#readalong #buddyread
Chapter 17: Somebody Turns Up
David could not “make up my mind whether I liked Uriah or detested him.” I made a text-to-self connection here, as I frequently will go yours without knowing if an acquaintance is a friend or an enemy.
Also of note, my first page of Google results for Uriah Heep was mostly the 1970s rock band.
#buddyread #readalong
My hold came in from #Libby and it remembered where I left off! Such smart technology! Just about 8 hours left of this #audiobook to finish!
Chapter 9: I Have A Memorable Birthday
The pic is from Wuthering Heights but it was the best I could find. David will forever remember turning 10 because that‘s the day he loses his mother. I think Dickens is suggesting she may have died from a lack of kindness. Mr. Murdstone seems actually cut up, but is that because he lost his son too? Or is he lamenting the fact he no longer has someone to psychologically abuse?

Chapter 5: I Am Sent Away From Home.
David is sent away to school because he bit his stepfather (in self defense!). Peggotty manages to at least give him an affectionate farewell and gains a suitor in the process. After an arduous journey, for an 8 yr old, David arrives, the other boys are still on vacation, but David is made to wear a humiliating sign on his back as punishment. He worries what the other boys will think and do when they see it.
David Copperfield, Chapter 3: I Have A Change.
David returns from the best vacation in his short life (what kid wouldn‘t get a kick out of living in a beached boat?) only to discover his beloved mamma has married the controlling Mr. Murdstone. We‘re introduced to Peggotty‘s adorable family-particularly doomed little Em‘ly.
Despite foreshadowing, this was a mostly humorous chapter. I often forget how funny Dickens is!

I spent a big chunk of the day working but took time off to run to HPB and found these!
Current #audiobook and I feel like Dickens was using the #NaNoWriMo form of writing, repeat full names every time you talk to them, about them, or think about them! Gets a little redundant.
I love this book!!!! It is one of my favorite Charles Dickens books of all time!!! I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars!!!! I love the characters so much!!!
I absolutely loved this book! It's Charles Dickens so yes, he does get rather prosy at times, but his ability to capture human nature is just brilliant. I couldn't believe how this book, published in 1850, contained so many people and situations that resonated with me completely. Reading this one as a chapter a day (until the end - I gobbled the last dozen chapters or so yesterday) was definitely beneficial for me. I think I may have been less ⬇️
Awww Dickens how I love you 😘💕 and boy can you create villains!!!
“Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show”
