Atonement
Atonement | Ian McEwan
From the Booker Prize winning author of Amsterdam, a brilliant new novel. On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching her is Robbie Turner, son of the Talliss cleaning lady, whose education has been subsidized by Cecilias and Brionys father, and who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By day's end, their lives will be changed irrevocably. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had not imagined at its start. And Briony will have witnessed mysteries, seen an unspeakable word, and committed a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atoneBrilliant and utterly enthralling in its depiction of love and war and class and childhood and England, An Atonement is a profound and profoundly moving exploration of shame and forgiveness, of atonement and of the possibility of absolution. From the Hardcover edition.

A a lot of people told me to read this book and so i obliged. I regretted it. I found the characters to be shallow and the story line to be slow paced and boring. The first half of the book felt similar to reading Jane Austen. It dragged on during parts two and three and I finished it but felt as if my time could have been spent reading something else. I know it‘s a favorite here, but that‘s my two cents.

What a beautifully written, descriptive novel. Part 2 had one of the best depictions of the effects of war I have ever read, except for THE ILIAD. That's saying something! That being said, I would have preferred a bit more action than mostly description. You really had to care about the characters to keep wanting to follow their paths.

Beautiful writing, morally grey plot, war narrative. This book really makes you question supposed “good intentions”, and show so many facets of love, grief, forgiveness, and atonement.

Thanks for the tag @sprainedbrain #manicmonday

📕 Atonement (a few favourites, but this is my top)
✍️ Jane Austen 👌
🎥 Absolute Power (I don‘t watch a lot of movies, I enjoyed this)
🎙 Annie Lennox (you must be guessing my age)
🎶 All Out Of Love - Air Supply (now you know #eightiesgirl )

Tagging anyone who wants to play.

CBee Atonement and Austen are definitely favorites today! Thanks for playing, fellow 80s girl 👏🏻👏🏻♥️♥️ 2y

@CBee is bringing back #ManicMonday! I love this game because I can change my picks almost as often as I change my mind. 😜

📖 Atonement (tagged)

✍️ Austen, of course… but she has competition (Atwood, Atkinson, Adiche)

🎥 Adore (2013) only because I wouldn‘t let myself pick Atonement for this category too.

🎤 Avenged Sevenfold

🎵 Adore You by Harry Styles (this is the hardest category!)

Tagging some friends, but everyone play!

The first part was a bit slow going for me, and I questioned why everyone loves it so much. It picked up in the second part and then, THE ENDING. I am so distraught, I literally want to just lie in bed all day and cry. The prose is masterful and the tension and suspense are deeply felt. This haunting examination of innocence vs. awareness and how one event can ripple through time is one I wish I could experience again for the first time. 5 ⭐️

McEwan‘s writing is very Literary(TM). Atonement actually has an interesting story, and I can see how it would make for a good movie, but it‘s just buried underneath McEwan‘s turgid prose. It was so overwrought at times I burst out laughing; weed isn‘t just weed, it‘s a “cigarette that drives young men of a bohemian inclination across the borders of insanity”. Not to my taste. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/atonement-ian-mcewan/

TheLudicReader I love how people have differing views on books. Both my kids studied this in AP English and would argue that this is the most perfect novel ever written. (Of course, my daughter said the same thing about Twilight when she was 13, so there‘s that.) I also loved this book, but McEwan does tend to go on. Lol 4y

I have a super soft spot for McEwan. On more than one occasion he has pulled me out if a reading slump.
Saw this movie years ago and was curious how much I would remember, it follows the book fairly well.
The characters are interesting and engaging, the story has a few twists and turns and as with most of his work (not you Cement Garden) I feel right into the atmosphere and story.

I first read this years ago before the movie came out, and I never finished it. I thought the movie was spectacular and heartbreaking beyond anything I had ever seen. But now, having read the novel, I actually find the film 🎞 to be better. The writing was eloquent and moving. But in general I was either enthralled or bored while reading—there is no in between. I don‘t know if I‘d be interested in reading his other works. #AuthorAMonth

No tears here, just some anger. I think McEwan wrote this story well, because he kept me feeling things for the characters even as the focus zigged and zagged through the years. It did hit me, the statement about becoming inventions, fantasies, after we are gone. We are the star of our story. It‘s easy to forget the story is different when you‘re in a supporting role someone else‘s.

On the other hand, I‘m not ready to hate Saiorse Ronan in something, and she‘s such a good actress that I know she‘s going to bring it as Briony. Foolish, infuriating Briony! I know she‘s just a kid, but I‘m so pissed at her right now!
