My Last Continent
My Last Continent: A Novel | Midge Raymond
25 posts | 17 read | 47 to read
An unforgettable debut with an irresistible love story, My Last Continent is a big-hearted, propulsive novel set against the dramatic Antarctic landscapeoriginal and entirely authentic love story (Graeme Simsion, author of The Rosie Project). It is only at the end of the worldamong the glacial mountains, cleaving icebergs, and frigid waters of Antarcticawhere Deb Gardner and Keller Sullivan feel at home. For the few blissful weeks they spend each year studying the habits of emperor and Adlie penguins, Deb and Keller can escape the frustrations and sorrows of their separate lives and find solace in their work and in each other. But Antarctica, like their fleeting romance, is tenuous, imperiled by the world to the north. A new travel and research season has just begun, and Deb and Keller are ready to play tour guide to the passengers on the small expedition ship that ferries them to their research destination. But this year, Keller fails to appear on board. Then, shortly into the journey, Debs ship receives an emergency signal from the Australis, a cruise liner that has hit desperate trouble in the ice-choked waters of the Southern Ocean. Soon Debs role will change from researcher to rescuer; among the crew of that sinking ship, Deb learns, is Keller. As Deb and Kellers troubled histories collide with this catastrophic present, Midge Raymonds phenomenal novel takes us on a voyage deep into the wonders of the Antarctic and the mysteries of the human heart. My Last Continent is packed with emotional intelligence and high stakesa harrowing, searching novel of love and loss in one of the most remote places on earth, a land of harsh beauty where even the smallest missteps have tragic consequencesHalf adventure, half elegy, and wholly recommended (Karen Joy Fowler, author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves).

Some authors have a lovely, poetic use of language but can‘t seem to move a story along. Others can write a compelling story but lack beauty in their words. This author does both very successfully. What a wonderful book!

I‘m thoroughly enjoying this novel set in Antarctica about two scientists studying penguins. The book‘s timeline is fascinating — the reader knows from the first page that a shipwreck has occurred, and the chapters circle first toward and then away from the tragic event. The suspense is killing me...!

This is a story of love and loss between two naturalists studying penguins in Antartica. Each chapter follows a timeline before|after the sinking of passenger ship Australis in Antarctica. For this being her first novel, a wealth of research by Raymond has been written into it's chapters which peeked my interest in Antarctica's landscape, the effects of tourism, its bird species, habitat and their plight. A great read!

Midge Raymond was inspired to write her novel after a life changing trip she took to Antarctica. She also volunteered once to participate in a penguin census in Argentina! This book has been on my TBR for a while but after hearing her read, I'm moving it up to the top of the pile! #wordstockpdx

I don't typically read contemporary romance novels but I LOVED this book. Yes there was a romance, and it was a significant element of the overall story, but it was so much more than that. I appreciated the non-linear storyline which allowed you to learn things at the most emotional moments. And the setting of Antarctica came to vivid life. #mustread

Enjoying this Antarctic love/survival story. Anyone else read it?

[DELETED] 2232195534 I like almost anything set in the Antarctic or the Arctic. Hope it's good!! 8y
BlogginBoutBooks It is! I was expecting a flashier, more action-packed story, but this is more literary fiction than action/adventure. I like the slow-building action, the relationship subplot, and learning about penguins/Antarctica. I haven't quite finished the book, but I'm definitely enjoying it! 8y
MrBook Not yet, so I added it 😎👌🏻. 8y

Really wanted to like this but Deb and Keller's relationship was just so not appealing that I barely finished this book. It's saving grace? Midge Raymond does such a fantastic job at describing Antarctica; her writing is so vivid and full of wonderful imagery that this icy, desolate and unwelcoming continent comes to life within the book's pages.

Now I want to go to Antarctica. But only if it's alright with the penguins.

So I'm still listening to the audiobook of The Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards, but what's the fun of reading only one book at a time? Am I right? So last night, as part of my bedtime reading I started My Last Continent by Midge Raymond. I just find Antarctica to be so fascinating. 💕🐧🚢

I needed extra coffee after staying up to midnight to find out what happened with the shipwreck, information that is teased out from the first chapter on. Really complex and page-turning plotting.

With its deft maneuvers in time, before and after the shipwreck, this love story spools out amid icebergs and penguins as it raced to a stunning and satisfying conclusion. Photo is author Midge Raymond at Powell's Wednesday night.

Took this at work the other day. The first two look THE SAME but even the third similarity is uncanny. 💫🌙☀️🌟First yellow covers and now starry skies! I should start a similar cover series on my blog 😜 Any other themes people are noticing?

TirzahPrice Check out The Smell of Other People's Houses. It's cover is on theme. 8y
WordWaller @TirzahPrice perfect match!! I love the purple. 8y
johnnie_cakes I just a newsletter for my store's upcoming events and noticed that yellow and orange covers were popular for July. 8y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I'm tired of seeing the backs of women's necks as covers for literary fiction with titles like "The _____'s Daughter" 8y
WordWaller @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com oh yeah! Also the backs of women or their silhouettes/legs. I hate when so many don't know a face as if we're being dehumanized. No thanks! 8y

This novel, about a tourist shipwreck on Antarctica, spoke to me. I visited the continent last year on a small vessel like the Cormorant and the trip changed my life. This book is beautiful and painful, and I can't quite describe how much I loved it. It made me ache with longing to be back.

Josie Oh that sounds so good! Definitely adding it to my TBR pile!! You look oh so cold lol but like you're having a great time! 9y

I love books that send me off looking for visuals like maps and penguins.

Christine Thanks for sharing this - I need a North or South Pole book for BOTNS Bingo, and my 9 year old has had a lifelong obsession with penguins, so this seems like a must. :) 9y
ReadingEnvy @Christine I am enjoying this one in particular because it isn't just an adventure story, also a love story with all these penguin and ice metaphors (but it's working for me, not heavy handed)... But still a quicker read. 9y
Christine Sounds perfect! 9y

This book completely teleported me into another world. It was a slow burn, but a good one, with beautiful language fitting of its setting.
