I finished this #audiobook a few days ago, but I didn‘t have time to make beef empanadas until today. I enjoyed a few of the stories, but most of them were not for me and I‘ll admit I was a bit lost in several. “Death and the Compass” remained my favorite. The empanadas, on the other hand were fairly simple and delicious.

Daisey @TheAromaofBooks This was also book 5 on my February list for #BookSpin. 3y
OutAndAbout Your empanadas look incredible! 3y
Texreader Wow those empanadas are gorgeous! 3y

Daisey @OutAndAbout @Texreader Thanks! I was a little nervous reading that the dough is somewhat like pie crust, but it turned out to be incredibly easy to work with. 3y
Texreader @Daisey I‘m always nervous about making any kind of bread including anything meant to be crusts. So I don‘t. How easy was it to make? 3y
Daisey @Texreader I make yeast breads all the time, but I almost never make flaky pastries or pie crust. This is a very simple crust from My Recipe Confessions containing only flour, butter, salt, and water (I left out the paprika). I cut in cold butter instead of melting which meant I did not need to chill it either. It went together quickly and smoothly with no difficulty. It does not actually turn out as flaky as pie crust, but it stayed tender. (edited) 3y

I am slowly making my way through this audiobook. A lot of the stories are a bit deep for me and a few I‘ve listened to twice for clarity. So far my favorite has been “Death and the Compass.”

I found this collection quite complicated, and in particular had to read one story, "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius," three times in order to feel like I understood it. Overall it‘s been an intriguing experience reading this and has given me more than enough to chew on. I suspect it even transmuted my worldview/literary view (kind of the same thing for me to be honest) if only slightly.

1️⃣ There are many, but let's say Labyrinth for today.
2️⃣ Star Trek (not Abramverse so much, though)
3️⃣ Antarctica
4️⃣ SF
5️⃣ Fluently, French and English; Reading, understanding, and mumbling, Spanish and Italian; wading through when reading, German, Latin, Dutch and Portuguese.

Erofan Wow! You are a polyglot! 👍 6y
Megabooks Totally agree on point 2! And impressive with the languages! 6y
tournevis @Erofan @Megabooks Thank you. I do have a talent for languages, but it's a must when you're an academic, so not too unusual in my field. As for Abramverse, it's full of eye candy, but only ST Beyond has any substance, you know? 6y
Megabooks @tournevis Agreed. I feel like, with Abrams, the movies moved to being more an action/SF franchise. Less thoughtful than the 20th century Roddenberry era. I haven‘t tried Disco since I can‘t rationalize paying for CBS All Access just for ST. 6y
tournevis @Megabooks Agreed. I understand about Disco in the US, CBSAllAccess is expensive for just that (we have it through Space here). It is very good, season 2 especially. Not DS9-level, but nuBSG-level. 6y

Finished. I loved some, disliked one or two of the short stories. Borges was a very intellectual man. I hate to say that I ignored proper nouns and italics because it went over my head Overall, it made me think which is why I read. It was a so-so for me. I'm thankful I was introduced to this work. Now on to Sammy Davis, Jr.

Halfway @jmofo. Some of it makes me uncomfortable, most of it makes me think, and that is why I love to read.

I really wanted to get this book on the way sooner for #LMPBC group F, but it was so richly detailed and complex, I really needed to take my time with the stories and essays. Also, this little fiend kept stealing my pen. 😜

Thought-provoking, diverse, and challenging. Clearly, Borges was brilliant.

I‘m so glad that you chose this book, Jessie! Thanks for sharing with us. 😃

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Also, my first #1001books read for 2019.

jmofo 👏 Yay! I found I truly loved reading it but I did have to focus more and couldn‘t read on breaks at work and still get much out of it. Which is weird, given its length. I love me a good chunkster because of having to give the time and attention to it and the fact that it was short, I kept looking at it like a lighter read. I, too, an so glad I read this book and I love we f groupers picked such different books! 6y

sprainedbrain @jmofo Definitely not something I could read on the fly. I had to sit down with it and not have interruptions. Some of these stories were just mind-blowing. I don‘t know what I was expecting, but this was so very good! ❤️ 6y
jmofo I liked that he definitely had a style but there was variety within that style. I had been wanting to read it for years, knowing he had influenced some super interesting authors. Because of this book, I‘m looking forward to reading some Lorca and Spinoza now...Also, that is a sweet photo of your “fiend”! 6y

I am glad I have finally read this book and I am looking forward to reading your reactions and insights.
This book is a collection of short works with complex or at the very least abstract subjects. I enjoyed it, all told. I‘m looking forward to to reading more by Borges

Trashcanman My friend my friend, I miss you. 6y

1. Mail my mark up book. I‘ve been real low and lacking gumption and I have anxiety that my f group friends will not like this weird little book. 😑 It‘ll be in the mail Monday or bust.
2. I am working but I hope to read and clean and finish up a Saturnalia kit I‘m making for a friend.
3. Gingerbread anything, everything. I‘m more into breads this time of year.
4. Labyrinths!!!!
5. Thanks for the tags, @Trashcanman so much love today

sprainedbrain I‘m sorry you‘ve been low! Please don‘t have anxiety about the rest of the group liking it... you didn‘t write it, you just picked it (with help from all of us) and part of the fun is seeing what others think. ❤️ 6y
Butterfinger I'm sorry too. We won't be too judgemental. I'm excited to learn more about my new friends than the books. 6y

jmofo @sprainedbrain & @Butterfinger I am loving the book but I‘m having to reread parts, so it is a little work. I only know three people who have read it and one of them was someone I bought the book for. 6y
sprainedbrain @jmofo I‘m excited about it! It‘s been on my tbr because it‘s a #1001books book, but it also has really good reviews on GR. 😃 6y
arubabookwoman Yes, please have no anxiety. First, remember that we all do not like the same books or types of books, and that it is no reflection on us personally if someone else dislikes a book we love. As Tammy said, I am as excited to get to know new Litsy people, and to read your thoughts on all the books as I am to actually read the books. Just try to relax and enjoy! 6y
jmofo @arubabookwoman @Butterfinger @sprainedbrain thank you so much for understanding and being so kind! 💜 It helps. I was kinda putting a lot of pressure on myself. 😅😬 6y
Butterfinger @jmofo I am so afraid I've messed up on yours. I couldn't get the text to enlarge at the time and couldn't find my reading glasses so I was getting my 10 year old students to tell me letters. I think I put Medford instead of your actual name. But everything should be correct. Talk about stress. I hope you have a great weekend. 6y
jmofo @Butterfinger I love that story. I‘m a cashier supervisor by profession and sometimes bar codes don‘t scan so I often offer to read the UPC “like a story” and try to do voices and use inflections. 6y

Group F friends: Here‘s my list of possible choices for #LMPBC. We seem to be readers 😬 so it was tough finding classics that weren‘t already read recently that I‘m interested in reading next month (since it‘s NaNoWriMo, I am planning my reading more that I tend to). Below, I have tagged books I am interested in, Labyrinths is a forerunner as I have had it on my shelf for years. Sorry for the delay, I got food poisoning over the weekend.

See All 9 Comments
arubabookwoman I‘m good (more than good) with any of those choices. The only one I haven‘t read is Always Coming Home, but the others were read 30 years or so ago, and all, except The Unbearable Lightness of Being, much loved and on my to be reread list. 6y
arubabookwoman Oooh—Sorry for the food poisoning. I hope you are recovered fully. 6y
Butterfinger I've not read any of those. I hope you are feeling better. @jmofo 6y
jmofo @arubabookwoman @Butterfinger I‘m feeling better, thank you! I just wanted you folks to know I wasn‘t ignoring the discussion. 😬 6y
sprainedbrain I would be happy with any of these choices! Labyrinths, Sula, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being are already on my tbr wish list, but the others look great, too. Glad you‘re feeling better! 6y

I meditated on that lost maze: I imagined it inviolate and perfect at the crest of the mountain; I imagined it erased by rice fields or beneath the water; I imagined it infinite, no longer composed of octagonal kiosks and returning paths, but of rivers and provinces and kingdoms... I thought of a labyrinth of labyrinths, of one sinuous spreading labyrinth that would encompass the past and the future and in some way involve the stars.

Following up my #bookishresolutions2018 to talk more about books with real people - I‘ve joined a new Bookclub! Challenging first read, full of metaphysics, symbolism, intensely stylistic writing - but I read it ( well ‘most ‘ of it😂) and I went!

Betty Did you enjoy it? 7y
Book_in_hands Book clubs are fun!!! Usually some good discussions and views on the books read. 7y
Mitch Enjoyed the discussion @Betty but not the book! I belong to another Bookclub, we‘ve been meeting (8women) for nearly 12 years. Over the years we‘ve gradually got into the habit for talking less and less about the books and more about life! So wanted to complement that wonderful group with a little more Book chat! 7y

@inwhichHeikereadsharder ❤️❤️❤️ My littlest, Tyler, grabbed the beans out of the pack before I had finished the letter! He screamed that he had been wanting to try them, popped one In his mouth and promptly began gagging on what seemed to be a mouth full of newly turned dirt. 😂😂 Thank you. 😘

Foragingfantasy @monkeygirlsmama we had a blast trepidatiously tasting them. And running for the trash to spit out the horribly god awful ones, like vomit flavor and rotten egg. 🤢 7y
monkeygirlsmama @Foragingfantasy So they really truly do taste icky huh? We've tried some weird flavors when there were samples out somewhere. I think we had really simple weird flavors though like mint mouthwash, clean baby wipes, and um... I can't remember the other. They were weird, but not gag worthy. 7y

"The Library of Babel" is my fav short story #setinalibrary! It's about a library that holds ALL POSSIBLE BOOKS (all combinations of letters in 300 pages). It sounds great, but it's awful: most of the books are complete gibberish-- it's a lifetime's work to find anything meaningful in all the nonsense. There's actually a website, libraryofbabel.info, if you want to bring some existential dread into your day. #seasonsreadings2016 @RealLifeReading

Does this book need more champions in this world? Borges existed on another plane from the rest of us--to read his work is to struggle to reach his level. When you do, even if it's only for a moment, it's sublime.
