The Anubis Gates
The Anubis Gates | Tim Powers
Ace Books is proud to present this classic novel of time travel in a beautiful new trade edition. It took the fantasy world by storm a decade ago, and now fans can savor this Philip K. Dick Award-winner for the first time all over again. Only the dazzling imagination of Tim Powers could have assembled such an insane cast of characters: an ancient Egyptian sorcerer, a modern millionaire, a body-switching werewolf, a hideously deformed clown, a young woman disguised as a boy, a brainwashed Lord Byron, and finally, our hero, Professor Brendan Doyle.

Casey loves a good dissolute lounge in the morning, and I‘m loving this book so far. It‘s packed full of STYLE from a bunch of different angles, with the kind of clear, punchy prose that practically reads itself. I‘m hoping for more time with it tonight.

1. Forward probably. There are too many inherent dangers of traveling back into history.
2. Tagged. It's a twisty tale, blending history, time travel and the occult.

I will readily admit that historic time settings are hit or miss with me so to have this book regarding time travel deal with a predominantly historic time period was a little bit of work for me. I found it a bit humorous and definitely one example of how white men fail up. The humor comes from watching someone from the 1980s try to survive in the 1800s was funny though some of the plot was a bit predictable.

Listening to the Anubis Gates with my son. It's odd to have his introduction to Romantic poetry be an adventure involving, among other things, time travelers at a lecture by Coleridge and a magical clone of Lord Byron brainwashed to kill the king!

RamsFan1963 @HeyT I don't believe I've read a Tim Powers book that I didn't enjoy. This and On Stranger Tides are my favorites. 4y

For #30junebooks, my #underrated ones are anything by Tim Powers or James Blaylock. They have a similar style (and are friends IRL I think?), which some consider a precursor to the #steampunk genre as it exists now. Many of their older books are out of print, so I always check for copies when I'm shopping! Tagged book is in my top 5 faves of all time, I have given away at least 2 copies of it!

@howjessreads

Soubhiville I‘ve been meaning to find a copy of this based on your rec at my Xmas bookswap! 5y
SenatorMothma @Soubhiville the next copy I find will be yours - unless you find one first! 5y

llwheeler I've had the tagged book recommended to me a few times now... guess I should listen! Lol. Also I have the stone giant but haven't read it yet - is it a good one? 5y
SenatorMothma @llwheeler definitely do!!! I started The Stone Giant but got distracted by other reads with library due dates approaching... haven't returned to it yet! 5y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Not familiar with James Blaylock, but I love Tim Powers. The Anubis Gates is a favorite and Declare was just crazy. 5y
SenatorMothma @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'd recommend starting with The Paper Grail for Blaylock. I think you'd like it! I haven't read Declare yet; after Anubis Gates I'd say Expiration Date is my next Powers fave. 5y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I‘ve got Expiration Date unread on the shelf! I‘ll get to it sooner rather than later. 5y
SenatorMothma @TobeyTheScavengerMonk and I'll bump Declare up in my queue! 😊👍 5y

What do you do when you're 80% into a book and you don't care about what happens to the main character because he always seems to be fine no matter what weird stuff is thrown at it? I'm forcing myself to finish it to be able to read something else. Also there are rules to time-travel and if some incohérences are not resolved I'll be one unhappy reader!

catsuit_mango Incohérences and paradoxes not solved... And always safe hero in the middle of chaos... Not to mention that the Egyptian gods are not really a part of the story.! Not convinced! 7y

This is my favourite #timetravel book, although I haven't read that many. I guess this one is not for everyone, but I loved all of its weirdness: there's body-swapping, a gang of murderous beggars lead by an evil clown/magician, Lord Byron (and other poets), Egyptian gods, horrible medical experiments... all in a mix of historical fiction with fantasy and a touch of sci-fi. Good times! #SizzlinSummerBooks

BOOK MAIL 📚📚📚 one for me for fun and one for my course :) The Anubis Gates was also one I was considering for #litsyaroundtheworld but I've decided on a different book now so this one is for keeps! can't wait to read it alongside all Stephen King's tips on writing 🤓🤓

TheNextBook On Writing is amazing! Very insightful and great reflections from him on life and writing. He also has a list of books that I need to tackle! 8y
Heideschrampf I love your kiwi socks! 😍 8y
AmandaL I second what @TheNextBook said. On Writing is fantastic. I read Anubis Gate, but I can't remember anything about it. 🤔 8y

TheLondonBookworm @AmandaL hmmm that doesn't bode well for the book! Still the premise is interesting :) 8y
TheLondonBookworm @LeeRHarry I'm getting a lot of mixed reviews about this one, I wonder why? Perhaps is one of those books that just divides people- I'll have to let you know when I'm done with it 😝 8y

I bought this audiobook as a daily deal, and I really had no idea what I was getting. This book has time travel, Coleridge, a scary clown on stilts, magic, monsters, Egyptian gods, Lord Byron, England in the 17th and 19th centuries, and a bit of poetry, among many other things. So weird, but very entertaining. Bronson Pinchot narrates, and did a wonderful job. Glad I didn't judge by the cover... I love a nice surprise! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bette Scary clowns! 😁 8y

Just revisited this book. Yes some of the criticism leveled at this book is true, the writing style may not be to everyone's taste and it is a fantasy a bonkers time travel fantasy, but frankly I still loved it, Egyptian magicians, crazy industrialist, body swapping, romantic poets and the most well done closed loop time travel scenarios, I have read. Powers ability to mold fantasy into historical settings is brilliant.

LeahBergen I read this years ago and really enjoyed it! 8y

Bailedbailed

Bailed after 4 minutes. Sometimes the audible daily deals are on special for a reason. 😝 #24in48

Keryntalia Ah, that's a shame! From memory the start of The Anubis Gates is boring modern-day framing stuff, before plunging into the frankly bonkers (but for me, hugely enjoyable) Victorian time-travel primary plot of the novel. 8y
Oblomov26 Strange - yet to listen, but absolutely loved the novel 8y

Audible has been getting a lot of my money lately with their daily deals. 😳 I couldn't pass this one up for $5.95, but at least I will have a month or so where I won't worry about running out of credits.

SusanInTiburon The last two time I used my last credit, I was offered a discount to buy more. 8y

In case you missed it - the Anubis Gate by Tim Powers is the Audible Daily Deal - one of the best time travel stories I have ever read with ancient Egyptian sorcerers, Byron, body stealers and a befuddled Coleridge biographer. For the price this is a great buy.
