In this memoir, Nurse Jennifer focuses on other people around her, and not so much midwifery. The tragedies of the Workhouse, Sister Monica Joan‘s thievery, and a special veteran. This second book is full of sad things but is a reminder that our greatest reward is in being of service to others. Love and compassion, always.
The first half was tough to read-mistreated, brutalized orphans, siblings being separated, and the life of those who stayed at the workhouses😫

I found the first part of this book quite hard work to read which coincidentally is the part about the workhouse. I found the second and third parts about sister Monica-Joan and Mr Collett much better and read these parts much quicker. It‘s awful to think that all of it was true and happened in the last 100-120 years. Again it was amazing to see so much of the tv was true!

So many in this one! 😅 Also a great TV series!

The opening section, of children and families in a workhouse, is so horrific I had to take breaks for nausea -- I haven't had to do that since reading a Holocaust memoir.
A pick. Moving and powerful, and I highly respect Worth's strongly compassionate approach.
This, unlike the first book, was focused on the horrors of the workhouse and the people who grew up there. The stories about Jane and Frank & Peggy were tragic and disturbing. I loved Jenny‘s relationship with Mr Collett, a veteran of the Boer War. Also included was the trial of Sister Monica Joan.
The quality remains great, but I prefer the other two because they focus more on Jenny's experiences specifically. Still, the depictions of life in the workhouse and during the Boer War are incredible. #memoir
You can‘t tell, but there‘s three animals in this picture. 🐱 🐶 🐶
I‘ve been curled up in bed with my kindle, my dogs, and my burrito blanket all day. It‘s just that kind of day 🥴
Had I not come across books 2&3 from this series in an LFL, I would not have borrowed and fallen in love with Book 1. Here, Book 2 is equally interesting focusing less on Jenny and more on people from the workhouses influencing her life.
Any Call the Midwife fans here? Oh my heart..? the relationship between Jenny and Mr. Collett cracked my soul wide open. I love how this series brings to light so many life lessons learned through hardships.
"You know the secret of life, my dear, because you know how to love."
The BBC TV series is excellent, but the books take you to a whole different level. To those who aren't familiar with it - it is based on true stories.
Second volume of memoirs of a nurse and stories about the patients she served in London's East End.
Moving account of what it was like to be poor in the early to mid 20th century.
Time for the next Call the Midwife Christmas Special. Man I really love this show! I need to do a complete rewatch. ❤️

Time for another #HolidayEpisode — I‘m starting at the beginning of Call The Midwife with the first Christmas special from 2012. I freaking love this show! I‘d highly recommend it if you haven‘t seen it. 🤗

Book 2 in the Call the Midwife series. Heartbreaking at times, but well worth the read. The narrator did a good job of conveying the emotions. Insightful and touching.

Started reading this book today, had some waiting time and thought this would be great to read in public. How could I forget I cry at every episode of the tv show?
Call the Midwife, book 2.
This follow-up is less focused on the author‘s midwife training and covers fewer patients‘ stories, albeit more deeply. Lots about the legacy of workhouses and the experiences of soldiers and their families during and after wartime. Pretty grim, but Sister Monica Joan provided some much needed comic relief.
Jennifer Worth wrote her #memoirs about her time as midwife and nurse in London's poor district Poplar in the '50s. I'm so glad times have changed in Europe. The books are worth a read, but to be honest I prefer the tv show.

This was a rough one to listen to. Had I not had something to distract me a bit I would have been bawling like a baby. The stories are heartbreaking.
Almost done with this one. Wonderful stories.
On this audiobook, for the first time I'm trying the speed-up feature, listening to it at 1.25x speed. Although it sounds a little rushed it's not TOO distorted, and I'll probably experiment with it more with future audiobooks. I'm curious what other people do - I've been hesitant to do it for some reason but it would be nice to get through books faster and be able to listen to more.
This book provides so much context about the dreaded workhouse, which I've seen referenced in many books set in 19th century England, but previously only had the vaguest understanding of.
I finished listening to The Hating Game yesterday (😍😍😍), so it's on to the next audiobook. I listened to the first in this trilogy a couple years ago and really loved it, but the second wasn't available in my library's Overdrive. Then I realized that I could recommend it, and my library bought it, and I was happy. 😊
Every midwife in Call The Midwife is my #hero #90sinJuly picked up the second book of the series as I thoroughly enjoyed the first. George RR Martin #youdrivemecrazy I'm going to have to watch this season without having read the book. I always read the GoT books first 😩😭curses and snarls , but I'm still gonna watch. 😍

A bittersweet remembrance of love, sadness, and strength. A joy to read.
I really like this book. It was a bit different from the first one. This didn't focuss so much in the midwife part of Jenny's life. It told the stories of few people and a few specific events. They were all very touching and in sister Monica Joan's case very funny. I liked reading more about workhouses. The stories were shocking and sad but still it was real history.
It's Black friday in my favourite web book store! This might get expensive...
My #nonfictionnovember2016 hasn't gone as I originally planned. I haven't read that many books of that genre because the one I started with was so deep, dark and depressing that I needed a break. Now I'm ready to get back in line with this. I so enjoyed the first book. I hope this is just as good.
I usually try to read as different books as possible. Meaning when I read for example a detective book after that I will read something like non-fiction or possibly an historical story. I'll try to read all the books in the image during November but probably will add some fiction into the mix. #photoadaynov16 #nonfictionnovember #TBR
Unflinching, transporting memoir-as-social-history/creative non-fiction treatment of the traumatic and taboo with tender and galvanizing sensitivity. Would have been worth my time just for the trial of nonagenarian esoteric philosopher Sister Monica Joan, conducted in part in Cockney rhyming slang. Nicola Barber's audio narration is first-class. A different experience than the first book or the television series and my preferred so far.
