Lost Girls
Lost Girls | Heather Young
A stunning debut novel that examines the price of loyalty, the burden of regret, the meaning of salvation, and the sacrifices we make for those we love, told in the voices of two unforgettable women linked by a decades-old family mystery at a picturesque lake house. In 1935, six-year-old Emily Evans vanishes from her family s vacation home on a remote Minnesota lake. Her disappearance destroys the family her father commits suicide, and her mother and two older sisters spend the rest of their lives at the lake house, keeping a decades-long vigil for the lost child.Sixty years later, Lucy, the quiet and watchful middle sister, lives in the lake house alone. Before her death, she writes the story of that devastating summer in a notebook that she leaves, along with the house, to the only person who might care: her grandniece, Justine. For Justine, the lake house offers freedom and stability a way to escape her manipulative boyfriend and give her daughters the home she never had. But the long Minnesota winter is just beginning. The house is cold and dilapidated. The dark, silent lake is isolated and eerie. Her only neighbor is a strange old man who seems to know more about the summer of 1935 than he s telling.Soon Justine s troubled oldest daughter becomes obsessed with Emily s disappearance, her mother arrives to steal her inheritance, and the man she left launches a dangerous plan to get her back. In a house haunted by the sorrows of the women who came before her, Justine must overcome their tragic legacy if she hopes to save herself and her children."

So the writing itself was really good, however, it was a slow read for me and I had a hard time connecting with the characters and unsure the point at times of the stories… but the writing was really what was keeping me hanging on. The end was a surprise to me! Also I hated the way she connected faith and prayer to this awful father, like tainting religion like this to child abuse and like prayer makes that okay to him. That was icky I felt.

The narrative alternates between Justine Evans (1999),and her great aunt Lucy‘s story (1935) this was a slow but steady story of loyalty between sisters Lilith, Lucy, and Emily. It revolves around there atmospheric summers in the 1930s at the lake house in Minnesota, adolescence, and summer friends, but the author builds a subtle but mysterious and dark story . #EasterExtravaganza @Andrew65

This #audiobook had some interesting moments, and it did keep my attention through to the end, but I never really liked either narrator and I thought by the end that these are all women that I‘m thankful aren‘t real! Yikes!!! #AudioColoring

I didn‘t really expect anything when I started this book but by the end I just had lukewarm feeling for the story. It wasn‘t a mystery/thriller in the traditional sense and that threw me off at first. But really the story was kind of slow going and I didn‘t really care for Justin‘s at first.

While this was written well I felt like this was just an ok story.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great debut novel--generational, suspenseful, redemptive. What happened to six year old Emily, sister of Lilith and Lucy? Her body was never found ... The setting is a lake house in northern Minnesota.

JoScho I still think about this one. I would love to read more from this author. 6y

TODAY‘S PROMPT: LOST BOOKS

I don‘t have any lost books, but I have a book titled THE LOST GIRLS to share.

THE LOST GIRLS was a family saga that had chapters about the lives of the three sisters.

I enjoyed THE LOST GIRLS despite the gloomy feeling that seemed to overshadow everyone.

Moving back and forth from Lucy‘s story of her momentous 1935 summer at age 11 and her great niece Justine‘s life around 2000, The Lost Girls is the story of family secrets, tragedies, and relationships. I enjoyed the alternating voices and the arc of each narrative. I did have to crank the audio to 2x for the slowness of the Lucy chapters.

This wasn‘t terrible, but it wasn‘t great. I knew from the beginning that the father was probably molesting his daughters, because that‘s the thing that writers write about now, in an attempt to be brave or daring or different. But, it‘s none of those things. It‘s tired and unnecessary, and its inclusion doesn‘t shed any light to an issue or bring awareness. It‘s just sad, and I‘m tired of it.

I listened to the playaway audio version & overall enjoyed the performances! During Lucy's sections off & on throughout I would zone out bc the older woman's voice put me to sleep &overall Justine's sections were more lively! In terms of the story, I enjoyed the progressions over the 2 timelines & how they connected. I predicted plot developments in both timelines but overall an enjoyable book that takes a look at cowardice & the price of secrecy.

There are only a few in all of the books that's I've read that are ones I would have liked to have thrown across the room. This one is the latest and most memorable though. Forced myself to get halfway through, had to extend my loan out of it, and still just couldn't finish it. It just went nowhere for me. Hate that ugh! 👎🏻😟 #photoadaynov16

JoeStalksBeck It's disappoints me so bad when I have a book on hold for what seems like an eternity, I'm all excited when I get it then.....😝 8y

This was an amazing historical mystery. A book that had me guessing until the end. The author did a great job of doling out the plot and letting the reader make their own assumptions. Then, when the reveal came it wasn't what I was expecting at all.

I loved this book that alternated between the present and 1935. I loved the Minnesota cabin and the mystery of what happened to Lillith and Lucy's sister, Emily. This is a first novel for Heather Young - I'm hoping to read more from her!

The Lost Girls jumped the pile because of the lengthy holds queue but it was worth it. A decades old missing child mystery runs along side of the present day, bumpy, family life of the child's ancestors as it slowly reveals how old secrets continue to haunt the family. I slowed down to savor this one. I thought it was a strong read for being a debut novel. 😊
