Royal We | Jessica Morgan
The "Washington Pos"t and "USA Today" Bestseller""I might be Cinderella today, but I dread who they'll think I am tomorrow. I guess it depends on what I do next."" American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister, Lacey, has always been the romantic who fantasized about glamour and royalty, fame and fortune. Yet it's Bex who seeks adventure at Oxford and finds herself living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, Great Britain's future king. And when Bex can't resist falling for Nick, the person behind the prince, it propels her into a world she did not expect to inhabit, under a spotlight she is not prepared to face. Dating Nick immerses Bex in ritzy society, dazzling ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace with him and his charming, troublesome brother, Freddie. But the relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical tabloids, Nick's sparkling and far more suitable ex-girlfriends, and a royal family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he's fated to become. Which is how she gets into trouble. Now, on the eve of the wedding of the century, Bex is faced with whether everything she's sacrificed for love-her career, her home, her family, maybe even herself-will have been for nothing.

I just love this book more every time I read it. The comedy is spot-on, the romance is beautifully developed, and Bex, Nick, and their friends all feel so real, even when the situations are so beyond what us commoners can expect. Simply majestic! #reread #romcom #satire

I admit I get a silly kick out of the ordinary girl becoming a princess trope, but at the same time, I might have been most engaged by the complicated relationship between Bex & her sister. It all added up to just the right amount of tangled tension. It wasn't perfect, as Bex seemed to lose more & more of her own sense of self as the book went on, and I was never quite convinced that she'd found it again. But it wrapped up sweetly.

For a romance about a normal girl and a prince falling in love, the characters actually seemed pretty realistic. This is a fun, quick read for a little escapism.

While I understand the likely intent of the author to begin with a prologue that reveals the protagonist‘s fate and conclusion of the novel, I‘m not sure it works. I think it diminishes the story arc, removing a lot of the speculation and emotional investment in the book, and it‘s characters, along with the wonder that would exist otherwise. Read Red, White, & Royal Blue instead; it‘s a much better novel in every way.

dgingo
Side note: One of the very best things about this book is that there‘s a character named after my favorite font. 😂
4y
TheAromaofBooks Dare I ask what the character's font-name is?? 4y
dgingo @TheAromaofBooks Of course you may! Garamond (Gaz for short). The character is supposedly a descendent of the man who invented the font. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Honestly Garamond is kind of a cute name. Now I'm thinking I should have named all my pets after fonts! 4y
dgingo @TheAromaofBooks Plan for the future! There are some great font names, even if I‘m not a fan of the font. 🤣 4y

I needed something light this weekend and this hit the spot. It is (not so) loosely based on Kate Middleton and Prince William with a heavy dose of snark which is not surprising since the authors also created the Go Fug Yourself blog. I am greatly looking forward the sequel which will be out this June.

I had heard so much about this - and most of it positive. But it was such a let down for me. Everyone is horrid. You never really get a sense of why Bex and Nick are a good couple - or why she thinks it‘s worth it. And so many terrible decisions. Not a person you‘re rooting for among them. Sigh.

This one was so fun and just hit the spot. I didn‘t want to put it down. It‘s a novel loosely based on Kate and William‘s royal relationship. It‘s definitely fiction, but it‘s a lot of fun. Bex and Nick meet at Oxford. Despite his royal status and the fact that she‘s an American, they fall in love. Their siblings, Freddie and Lacey, and his responsibilities cause some major road blocks for the couple. A great light read.

This was really hard...I‘m kinda inbetween Pick and So-So. It was glorified Will and Kate fanfiction...which don‘t get me wrong, I love them. But this was just fluff, and it didn‘t really pull me in...until the last 100 pages or so. All in all it was a big Royal Meh

This book was the cutest! An American student meets a prince (meet-cute 🚨) and they fall in love. It was a little predictable but completely worth it, just adorable. I will say that when I picked this up from the library, the page count threw me a bit, and I questioned how badly I wanted to read it. Yes, it‘s long but it doesn‘t drag at all. Plus, there‘s a sequel coming out next year! Maybe 🍼? This was an excellent guilty pleasure read.

I can't believe we're at the end of the #RoyalRead! It's been so fun to revisit this book and delve into some of the real-life inspiration behind it. Questions below! @Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl @MellieAntoinete

ferskner Question 1: Were you surprised by Clive's betrayal? Did you understand his bitterness toward Nick? 6y
ferskner Question 2: Did you feel any sympathy for Lacey by the end of the book? Were her actions unforgivable? 6y
ferskner Question 3: If you were Nick, could you have forgiven Bex? Do you agree with his choices? 6y
See All 12 Comments
ferskner Question 4: What do you think Nick and Freddie's relationship will be like after the kiss with Bex? 6y
ferskner Question 5: How did you feel about Nick and Bex's decision to marry to thwart Clive's plan? 6y
ferskner Question 6: What do you think happens after the impromptu wedding?!!? What does the future hold for Nick and Bex? 6y
Librarybelle 1. In some ways, I wasn‘t surprised. Clive always seemed to be so suave and kind of nonchalant about his connections with the royal family...and yet, he was a reporter looking for “the big scoop.” He played off being castoff by Bex for Nick too well - sure, he was mad, but it almost seemed like he “forgave” too easily. 6y
Librarybelle 2. I think I‘m still a little too upset with Lacey! Sure, she does deserve forgiveness. I think Bex handled the whole situation well, but she must have felt such a betrayal! 6y
Librarybelle 3. Like Nick, I would have hoped to be told about what happened without hearing about it through someone else. But, to jump to wrong conclusions. And the kissing incidences happened during rough times for Bex and Nick. Freddie announcing his love would be a little bit harder to swallow, in my opinion. But, I don‘t think Bex deserved the cold shoulder or the inability to initially talk about it. 6y
Librarybelle 4. I think it will be a little strained - it has to be. But, they‘re also so close. I would hope that Nick and Freddie can work through everything. They need each other. 6y
Librarybelle 5. I thought it was such a spontaneous and fun idea! It fits with their personalities. It seemed like partly to thwart Clive, but in a way, it‘s like the best possible wedding ceremony for two people and their closest friends. 6y
Librarybelle 6. I‘m sure there is fallout. I can‘t think that Nick will be forced to give up his claim to the throne. The Queen seems to understand things, in her own way. I would hope nothing serious comes of the whole thing. 6y

This was such a fun read! It was lighthearted, yet with moments of deep sorrow and pain. I loved the parallels with the British royal family - though written around the time of William and Kate‘s courtship, there are certainly echoes of Harry and Meghan‘s relationship in this book. So. Much. Drama! This section is hard to read since we see Bex losing hold of herself in ways we haven't through the rest of her relationship with Nick. I remember reading opinions that Meghan gave up too much to marry Harry, and that came to mind while reading about everything Bex is forced to abandon. Questions below! @Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl @MellieAntoinete

ferskner Question 1: Was Bex right to let Nick go on another deployment so soon? How would you have handled that? 6y
ferskner Question 2: Why do you think Lacey struggles so much to understand the position Bex is in? 6y
ferskner Question 3: Freddie!!!! What was he thinking?!? How can he and Bex recover from such a huge blunder? 6y
See All 9 Comments
ferskner This is more of a comment than a question, but I'm super fascinated by the physical transformation that Bex has to undertake. I always wonder how much truth there is to it! What do you think? 6y
Librarybelle 1. To me, this is Bex‘s first step out of her old life. Not that she was truly selfish before, but she‘s really trying to make sure Nick is happy. She wants him to feel as normal as possible. But, this is bad timing. Very bad timing. I think a longer conversation about it would have been appropriate. 6y
Librarybelle 2. Lacey has always been the one in the spotlight - the prettier one, the more successful one. She also had a way bigger royal obsession than did Bex. It‘s a change. She struggles with this role reversal. It‘s like she loved the product but didn‘t understand how the product was created. 6y
Librarybelle 3. Yikes! You just know this is going to get out somehow, some way. I question if he truly feels that way about Bex. Maybe he does, but it‘s such poor timing. It‘s like a rom-com, which I love! Nice little plot twist. I haven‘t started Part 5 yet, so I‘m crossing fingers everything works out! 6y
Librarybelle 4. I bet there is some truth to that! I‘m not sure if it goes to all of the lengths described, but we do know Meghan has experienced some major changes. That would be interesting to know... 6y
KarouBlue Love this picture of Wills & Kate! And yes, there‘s a long section where both Nick & Bex kind of fall apart. 6y

Part 3! One of the reasons I love this book is because I'm super jealous of Bex's life. Not the marrying a prince part, but that she's able to settle in London and really make a life for herself, and even work in an amazing museum. I've only been to London once, but it was totally addicting. This book makes me a little sad since I'll never get that life, but I can dream through Bex. Questions below! #RoyalRead @Librarybelle @CoverToCoverGirl

ferskner Question 1: Do you agree with Bex post-breakup coping skills? How would you have handled public heartbreak in her situation? 6y
ferskner Question 2: How do you feel about Bex's friend group? Who's your favorite? 6y
ferskner Question 3: Oh my gosh, Bex and Freddie kiss!!!! Why do you think this happened? Have you ever wondered if Harry had a crush on Kate? 6y
See All 12 Comments
ferskner Question 4: Bex and Nick get engaged after a very short time back together. What obstacles to do you think still exist in their relationship? 6y
ferskner Question 5: Did you cry at the proposal? 6y
Librarybelle 1. Losing yourself in destructive behavior is never good, but everyone reacts differently to a big breakup. I‘ve never had a public breakup, so I don‘t know all of the pressure involved in that. I can‘t imagine going down the path Bex did - though I‘m not a party person to begin with, so I‘m very different from Bex. After a hard breakup, we all develop some sort of coping mechanism that isn‘t the healthiest; it depends upon our personalities?? 6y
Librarybelle 2. I think her friend group tries to be supportive. In a way, they‘re a little cliched with every other romance-y, chick lit-y book, but I don‘t mind that! Gaz is probably my favorite...I chuckle anytime he does something. I‘d love a buddy like that! 6y
Librarybelle 3. I felt like the kids just happened. They got caught in the moment, seeing everyone else making out in secluded places. Not sure how much of an attraction piece there was, though clearly they both were thinking of the other siblings. I can‘t see Harry having a crush on Kate, but who knows??? Haha! 6y
Librarybelle 4. This time, things seem more structured, in that Nick is prepared to go the distance, introducing Bex to his mom for instance. But, there‘s still the press and the royal family and the horror (!) of an American potentially sitting on the throne. So, many obstacles still! 6y
Librarybelle 5. Maybe a little, but I really cried at the death of Mr Porter! Oh my, so unexpected and so sad! I‘m actually tearing up now thinking of it. But, as to the proposal, I love that the first ring came from a Cracker Jack box! 6y
ferskner @Librarybelle I forgot to answer my own questions! 1. I agree - I'm not a partier so it's hard to know how I'd react, but I can see trying to put a positive spin on my life if I had to break up publicly. 2. I'm also a Gaz fan! It's hard not to be. 3. So: at the William and Kate wedding, there is a look Harry gives Kate at the altar that is INTENSE. I've wondered so many times! 4. I think it was good they spent time apart... 6y
ferskner @Librarybelle ...and I think Nick in particular needed to sort a lot out for himself. Both in terms of the reality of what was expected from him vs. his own desires and in what was reasonable to expect from a partner. I don't think he'd considered much realistically when he started the relationship. 5. That is so interesting! I realized I rarely cry at sad stuff - usually sweet moments. Weird! 6y
