Tomie is a horror manga series written by Junji Ito, set around a young beautiful girl named Tomie Kawakami. This alluring high school girl was not as she looked. She was deeply sinister and possessed the ability to reconstruct herself from fragment pieces of her body. This factor made her indomitable, no matter how many times she got killed.

taytum.procee Tomie had the ability to manipulate the minds of people, but mostly men, to drive them into hysteria, violence, and compulsion.
Her inhabitation wraps around the minds of her victims, making them enslaved to her. Leading to them doing appalling deeds, generally resulting in self-destruction or murder. Each chapter in this novel delves into different people and their meetings with this teenage girl.
1mo
taytum.procee Displaying how her impact on people can lead to the darkest form of oneself. The main themes of this manga are vanity, immortality, manipulation, and the mania obsession can cause.
A book I believe is similar to this manga is Parasite Eve. This novel blends science fiction and horror with body horror themes. The book centers around a Scientist who gradually becomes obsessed with bringing his dead wife back.
1mo
taytum.procee He attempts this by using genetic manipulation, leading to ghastly outcomes. This book also explores the themes of obsession, immortality, as well manipulation of life.
The two most prominent themes in this manga in my opinion are obsession and immortality. Why obsession is a key theme because nearly anyone who comes in contact with Tomie suddenly becomes consumed by an irresistible fixation on her.

taytum.procee It first starts with the adortion of her charm and beauty, but then instantly spirals into deep desire and complete madness. All men who go under Tomie‘s spell become driven to anything she asks of them. Like murder, either of each other or killing Tomie herself. But despite how many times she dies, the fascination she has over these men never really ends and she forever continues to go and seduce her victims. 1mo
taytum.procee This attribute to the manga analyzes the destructive nature of desire, displaying how it will lead to the loss of rationality in one's self. Secondly, Tomies capability to reestablish herself after countless times of being killed highlights the theme of immortality. No matter how many times her victims dismembered her into dozens of pieces, burned her, or destroyed her, Tomie unavoidably regenerated into even multiples. Tomie's endurance makes
1mo
taytum.procee her an impossible force of nature to escape. Her constant regeneration isn't a blessing, more or less a curse that will drive anyone to their fate. Through using this theme, Junji Ito probes how eternal life can put terrifying weight on an individual, not as a form of skill, but as a source of massacre.

1. The Victorian Era, Pioneer/Gilded Age Era, modern day, and the future (you can't make me choose just one ;-) )
2. Still reading “Bookshops & Bonedust“ by Travis Baldree and “A Sky of Infinite Blue“ by Kyomi O'Connor
3. Since starting to keep track of my reading in 2014, the longest book I've read is “Tomie“ by Junji Ito (750 p). But as for a traditional novel, it would be “The Woman in White“ by Wilkie Collins (672 p).

A leftover TBR read from October! Tomie is gorgeous, evil, and incites violence everywhere she goes- and killing her often just makes her multiply like some kind of sexy gremlin. This graphic novel is more slaying than sleighing, so not at all a Christmas read, lol.

Do you like horror? How about manga? Ito is one of the foremost authors of both, and this shows his skills, even if it isn't the book that he is most known for in the West possibly. A series of stories, each a different take on the same premise, ends up being a delightful 700 page book when brought altogether.

Just finished this.

I really enjoyed it, the art is good and the stories are messed up!

It‘s repetitive but there was enough variety to keep me interested!

Holy SMOKE!!

I. AM. SO. EXCITED! 😁

🎉

A month ago we were at B&N (late birthday visit due to pandemic) when I saw Tomie on a re-shelf cart. I picked it up & was looking at it longingly when my little 5 yr old niece came up to me hugging a stuffed Buckbeak. She loves stuffies & HP! I put the book down LOL

I went to B&N earlier this week .... Tomie was gone 😫

I‘m utterly THRILLED that you chose this book! 🤗🤗🤗

Thank you @Jari-chan

#BlameItOnLitsy hits and misses..
Hits:
Tomie - loved it for the wild, macabre ride
Brazen - Yummy artwork and lovely women, need I ask for more?!
Cabin at the end of the world - Very relevant, in these intolerant times..

Misses:
Vox - too loud but flat
Annihilation - too complex for me, didn't understand much

Just hit 2500!

Have yet to fully dive into Ito (just his book on cats and what I've seen online), and I'll probably check out Uzumaki before this one, but from what I've heard, few characters match today's theme like Tomie.

Whether or not you enjoy manga, if you are a horror fan, Tomie is an absolute must-read. It took me 2 days to devour this manga (which you can find online), because I had to read it in breaks. It's that disturbing. TW for lots of gore and gross. Junji Ito is a King and my future baby daddy.

BookJunkie429 My hubby reads manga, I'll let him know about this one. Chances are he might've already read it. 9y
winemom I believe this series is from the 80s, so he may have. I just discovered all of Ito's horror manga, so I'm late to the party. lol 9y
