The Glass Magician
The Glass Magician | Charlie N. Holmberg
Now well into her apprenticeship with magician Emery Thane, twenty-year-old Ceony Twill is continuing to discover the joy of paper magic. She adores bringing her spells to life in surprising ways, from learning the power of distortion to creating a beloved paper dog. And she secretly hopes that the romance she foresaw blossoming between her and the peculiar yet strikingly handsome Emery finally becomes real. But when one magician with a penchant for deadly scheming believes that Ceony possesses a secret, he vows to discover it...even if it tears apart the very fabric of their magical world. After a series of attacks target Ceony, and catch those she holds most dear in the crossfire, she knows she must find the true limits of her powers...and keep her knowledge from falling into wicked hands. The delightful sequel to Charlie N. Holmberg's The Paper Magician, The Glass Magician will charm listeners young and old alike.

While I liked The Paper Magician, I didn't love it. I felt like the characters were more real and fully developed in this sequel and I was thoroughly drawn into the story. I was on the fence about continuing the series, but definitely will now!

Book 2 of the paper magician. I find this one not as intricate as the first. Ceony being lovestruck and idiotic at times made me cringe. We got to see how glass magic works and what one can do with it. Overall the story flowed and remained interesting.

I cannot get enough of this series! Even though Ceony is a little hotheaded and quick to place herself and others in danger, which cost her dearly this go around. Hopefully she‘ll think before she acts in the next book.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ LOVED this second installment in the trilogy! I can really relate well to all of characters; the story line is fresh and imaginative, being, in my opinion, a perfect blend of reality and fantasy; the romantic tension is just right for me, I am not big on romance in stories but Holmberg got it right in this series! Cannot wait to read the final book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this book and the whole series (5 stars for the 1st, 4 for the 2nd, 3 for the last). It was mostly enjoyable and I enjoyed the characters and unique magic system all the way through, but the first book was the best and the other two tried to follow similar plots without that spark from the first. Definitely worth reading, though, and they were a lot of fun!

It was good and fun. There were some things I didn't like which kind of effected my reading. I wasn't feeling the character development for Ceony and Emery and between each other. It feels like the author was dragging that out a bit. The pacing also felt uneven. However, the story was really good and the action was pretty well done. 🔍🔍🔍/5

Interesting concept, magic of varying specialties as a normal & reasonable part of society. Unfortunately, the writing is meh, the characters are meh, & anachronisms distractingly abound. A lot of questionable choices were made by Holmberg, some of which border on problematic. That said, sometimes books like this may be called for as palate cleansers, which is how I'll eventually end up reading the final book in this trilogy. • ⭐️.5/5

On the one hand I am fully aware that f*g is British slang for cigarette, but on the other, it's literally the only British colloquialism I've seen the author use. Given that she's a Mormon from Utah, I'm inclined to think this was a bullshit move on her part. Also unsure as to whether this terminology, like just about every other damn word in this book, is anachronistic. Starting to believe that this book had no editor at all because #YIKES!!

jpmcwisemorgan I've not read this one but I have read one or two others by this author. I don't recall this as a problem in what I have read so I wonder if I missed it because it's unlikely that this is a one of thing for her. Now I'm curious. And I agree, it's likely on purpose. (edited) 8y
shanaqui First recorded example per the OED in 1888. In Britain it really doesn't have the meaning you object to; I didn't understand why it was considered an insult until my teens. I didn't even notice the use of the word in this book; it felt completely normal. I don't know the author's opinions on queers, but so far I haven't noticed anything in the books that would make me inclined to believe it's a deliberate slur rather than attempt at authenticity. 7y
lauren.lerner I'd be more convinced the author was attempting authenticity if she'd tried to do it anywhere else in her books, @shanaqui. She's an American and it certainly shows. This was jarring, much like the rest of her anachronisms. (edited) 7y
See All 9 Comments
shanaqui I did, hence quoting the first written usage in the OED. My point was that the word that so shocked you could equally have been a stab at authenticity, as I've seen no other evidence to suggest otherwise (so far, anyway). I found your striking out of the word when used to refer to a cigarette a bit much, really; that was the point of me explaining that in the UK we don't necessarily even think of the pejorative meaning. Alas for character limits - 7y
shanaqui I chopped some sentences from the original comment to fit in a single one. Perhaps that impaired my meaning. 7y
shanaqui Oh, I see you changed that comment before I replied (I responded to the one which asked if I even read your post). I agree that I don't see many other attempts at authenticity, but nor do I see any homophobia supported by the text (so far). 7y
lauren.lerner As I said in my original comment, the author is a Mormon from Utah. Mormons are not the most tolerant of people so while she may not have been attempting to be homophobic, the fact remains that she was consistently anachronistic throughout the books so this still reads badly to me. Delightfully, we are all allowed our opinions so obviously you're welcome to disagree with mine, @shanaqui. 7y
lauren.lerner Also I'm well aware of the meaning of the word in England, hence me mentioning it in my original comment. I have a dear friend who is both gay & uses that term in question to mean cigarette as she was raised part time in England. I did not require education on that point which is why I initially asked if you'd read my caption to begin with. (edited) 7y
shanaqui Realised I am making this too much of A Thing -- have been noodling around on Litsy far too much while anxiously awaiting exam results. Your feelings/opinion are totally valid and I get why the word can look totally ugly, even innocently used. I'll take myself off now. XD 7y

"He drew a happy face after that--two dots and a curving line--and signed his name." • A smiley face?? In the 1910s in England?? I think the hell not. These are the kinds of anachronisms that make me seethe - Who edited this book?? Was it even edited at all??? #mindlessmediocrity #exceptitsmakingmemadhowbadthisis #YIKES ?

ValerieAndBooks Yikes is right! Very highly unlikely for that era! 8y
lauren.lerner There are soooooo many little things just like this in these books, it's wild, @ValerieAndBooks, truly next level absurdity. The author started writing as a Star Trek fanfic writer though so now I'm wondering if her fanfic about the future was similarly anachronistic? That's always something that bothered me in fanfic; I don't like it any better in formally published work. 8y

I didn't hate this but like the first one, the plot is boring. I'm also not super into the main character, but she doesn't bother me too much. However, the magic system is fascinating and I wish the plot reflected that. I also love all the supporting characters and the romance isn't too overpowering. I probably wouldn't read this again, but they are such quick reads, I am going to finish the series.

I'm enjoying this series, but I would happily slap Ceony for her stupid, reckless disregard for everyone's safety. She makes some mind-bendingly stupid decisions that anyone could see would be disastrous. I find it hard to believe she is so oblivious to the big, glaring flaws in her plans, so I was pretty impatient with her. I adore the magic in her world, which will keep me reading despite my frustration.

If you enjoyed The Paper Magician, I would definitely recommend reading the second book in the trilogy. The story picks right back up, in a smooth but not monotonous flow, and manages to add a few surprising elements and enough interesting bits to keep up with the first book. There were a couple of weak spots but overall I did enjoy the same clever scene setting that made TPM so special, so I'd say ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2.
