Breaking Night | Liz Murray
15 posts | 27 read | 33 to read
Liz Murray never really had a chance in life. Born to a drug-addicted father who was in and out of prison, and an equally dependent mother who was in and out of mental institutions, she seemed destined to become just another tragic statistic. Another life wasted on the brutal streets of New York. By the age of 15, Liz found herself homeless with nowhere to turn but the tough streets, riding subways all night for a warm place to sleep and foraging through dumpsters for food. But when her mother died of AIDS a year later, Liz's life changed for ever. With no education, with no chance at a job or a home, she realised that only the most astonishing of turnarounds could stop her heading all the way down the same path her parents took. And so she set her mind to overcoming what seemed like impossible odds - and in the process, achieved something extraordinary. Told with astounding sincerity, Breaking Night is the breathtaking and inspirational story of how a young women, born into a world without hope, used every ounce of strength and determination to steer herself towards a brighter future. Beautifully written, it is a poignant, evocative and stirring portrait of struggle, desperation, forgiveness and survival.

5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book is absolutely outstanding. It is so well written. It‘s moving, inspiring, heartbreaking and allows a glimpse into the hurdles and adversity that most of us will never experience. It will give you a great big dose of empathy. I‘m so glad to have read it.

I‘m at my nephew‘s college graduation today, I am so very proud of him.

And this author was the keynote speaker, definitely a great story I‘m going to have to read now. Who knew I‘d get an author speaker too.

Her message:
“You are responsible for the energy you bring”

I‘m all for that!

Nute Congratulations to your nephew!🙌🏽 That‘s pretty awesome that the occasion included a second extra treat!😃 3y
tpixie What a lovely bookish surprise! Also congrats to your nephew!!! 3y

With plenty of hard luck story memoirs out there, the author's insight and writing make this one truly special.

Jerzie_berry Hey there! I‘m currently reading this book and have loved it so far but I‘m a little confused with the ending of chapter 2. When she goes to the doctors why did they make her bleed? I don‘t understand why they needed to do that test on her. Maybe I‘m missing something obvious lol 😂. If someone could help explain it to me I would really appreciate it. Thanks! 3y

Day 12 - #Forgiveness #SoulSeptember

Breaking Night is the stunning memoir of a young woman who was living on the streets, and made it into Harvard.
When Liz's mother died of AIDS, she decided to go back to high school. Liz squeezed four years of high school into two, while homeless; won a New York Times scholarship; and made it into the Ivy League. Breaking Night is a beautifully written story of 1 young woman's spirit to survive against odds.

Eggs Oh that‘s amazing ! 👏🏻🤗👏🏻 5y

Murray is the daughter of drug addicts who died of Aids. They neglected her, scandalously, but loved her in their own hopelessly dysfunctional way. By the age of six she was accustomed to watching her parents shoot up (her mother was almost blind, so her father had to help her do it). She left home at 15 and it was an extraordinary achievement. From homeless to Harvard. #truestory #highlyrecommend #memoir #lifejourney

Mariposa_Bookworm Did you see the Hallmark movie based on her story? It was very good. 5y
maggie_azevedo @Mariposa_Bookworm No, I didn't see that... thank you for letting me know there's a movie based on her story. 5y

#Truth #MayBookFlowers This was an incredibly sad and inspiring #memoir. The daughter of drug addicts, Liz spent years living on the streets. After her mother died of AIDS, she went back to school. While still homeless, she finished four years of high school in only two and was accepted to Harvard. #nonfiction

Finished this on audio today. Wow. I'm always amazed at people's grit & determination especially when everything seems to be against them. Heartbreaking yet hopeful. I didn't know they made a movie based on her life. Gonna check it out.

I haven't felt this motivated to choose kindness and work hard for my goals in awhile. Following Liz Murray's life as a hungry, dirty and neglected child of drug addicts to her homelessness and finally her determination to give her life options really inspired me. Homeless to Harvard graduate! I'm so glad this memoir was my January book club selection!

World-renowned make-up artist, Bobbi Brown, has an all-time favorite book, Liz Murray's "Breaking Night". Her favorite bio read in 2016, Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run". Lindsey Vonn's "Strong Is the New Beautiful", Colleen Yee's "Yoga For Life", Helena Rubenstein's "Beauty Is Power", & Lisa Eldridge's "Face Paint", are her other favorites. Quite a set! #BestBookRead #ReadToLead

Has anyone read this? She's coming to Paris to speak in a couple of months, so I thought I'd read her book. Opening it, I really didn't hear/ see anything I hadn't already seen as lawyer. Nothing surprises me anymore. But then, this Harvard grad starts giving detailed descriptions of her experience, loving her parents through their junkie habits, while she and her sister starve, stink and have lice, etc. It's gripping. Those poor babies!

bookishkai I've read it. Her story really is inspirational. 8y
Sydsavvy That's what one of our local schools is hoping. I was skeptical that she could bond with our kids, but I'm thinking she can get them right where they are. 8y

You will be cheering for this girl at the end. It is incredible what this lady endured in her childhood and still came out okay. True story of how a little girl went from homeless to Harvard.
