Actual photo of me when the king swore that the Oracle of Delphi lied about his wife not cheating on him, and his son immediately died. Otherwise I hated this. The story is horrible, and I listened to the worse quality audio recording I‘ve ever encountered. It sounded like someone put a tall mic in front of a stage and just ran the stage play. 😂 So hard to hear, except when they played loud trumped fanfares 😦 #Shakespeare
So excited to read The Winters Tale! I read it once in college , and now many years later I am taking the chance to read it again❤️
Still so chuffed about getting that iconic stage direction! Also, this play is fucking weird, is it a tragedy w/wacky bits? A comedy that starts hella dark? A mishmash of both & 5 other things? Yes to all. And I liked it! Very readable, has some great speeches from female chars, kooky but not slapstick, a wild twist & basically a happily ever after? Shakespeare was in his feels. Fun, weird, & GAY, Leontes & Polixenes were def doing it. 4/5 ⭐️
What u do
Still betters what is done. When u speak, sweet,
I‘d have u do it ever. When u sing,
I‘d have u buy & sell so, so give alms,
Pray so; & for the ord‘ring yr affairs,
To sing them too. When u do dance, I wish u
A wave o‘ th‘ sea, that u might ever do
Nothing but that, move still, still so,
And own no other function. Each yr doing,
So singular in each particular,
Crowns what u are doing in the present deeds,
That all yr acts are queens
Aaahhhhhhh finally, the greatest stage direction! I don‘t think I knew which play it was from. 🏃🏻🐻
LEONTES: A gross hag!—
And, losel, thou art worthy to be hanged
That wilt not stay her tongue.
ANTIGONUS: Hang all the husbands
That cannot do that feat, you‘ll leave yourself
Hardly on subject.
[Hardy har, women talk too much, amirite??]
We were as twinned lambs that did frisk i‘ th‘ sun
And bleat the one at th‘ other. What we changed
Was innocence for innocence.
[Yup, def queer.]
I‘ve heard this one is hella queer so of course it‘s my monthly Shakespeare pick for June 🏳️🌈🎭 #nowreading #shakesqueer
Though technically a comedy, there is plenty of tragedy in the first three acts, with Leontes‘ paranoia as dangerous and baseless as Henry VIII‘s, or Trump‘s, for that matter. The action moves along at a fast clip, and though I missed many fine points, I was pleased to find it easier to read than expected. It‘s been over a decade since I read Shakespeare, and the first time I read simply for my own pleasure. Love Paulina.
I like Shakespeare, but this was a rather odd mixture of tragedy and comedy and neither really drew me in. I found myself kind of bored, although the later acts of comedy where definitely more interesting for me.
For #Popsugar this year, I had to read two books that share the same title. I read this one and Helprin‘s Winter‘s Tale.
Friends, I wasn‘t crazy about either of them. 🤷🏻♀️
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Leontes. Break up the seals and read.
Officer. [Reads]. Hermione is chaste;
Polixenes blameless; Camillo a true subject; Leontes a jealous tyrant...
Lords. Now blessed be the great Apollo!
Hermione. Praised!
Leontes. Hast thou read truth?
Officer. Ay, my lord; even so As it is here set down.
Leontes. There is no truth at all i' the oracle...
Sitting in Starbucks enjoying my Earl Grey tea, when I spotted this hat. So what random act of #shakespeare would you perform?
Saw some loose Shakespeare pages on Etsy and couldn‘t resist 😂

I guess my sister‘s Shakespeare collection doesn‘t have The Winters Tale, but it‘s still impressive! Just look at the LEGO mini figure of Shakespeare!!!
@merelybookish All of the books I ordered with my #shakespearereadalong gift card have finally arrived! Thank you so much! 📚
Stuff and nonsense. I struggled to get into this, hence I fell far behind the #shakespearereadalong. Leontes, King of Sicilia, has a ridiculous hissy fit and thereby causes heedless death and suffering. Sixteen years later, Polixenes, King of Bohemia, has a hissy fit of his own which makes everything right in the end (if you can forget said death and suffering). And as for that ending?! Nope!
I liked Paulina. I loved the language. And that's all.
The Winters Tale is based off Robert Greene‘s Pandosto, it‘s kind of like Shakespeare‘s dramatization of the story. My edition to includes some excerpts from Pandosto (20 pages worth)... it‘s an elegantly written work on its own, even if it goes a bit silly in the comedy parts.
#shakespearereadalong
And Neil Patrick Harris is my rogue Autolycus... singing, scamming, etc.... come on, he played Barney and Count Olaf...he‘s got this goofy character.
#ShakespeareReadAlong
Ok, I‘ve been saving some of these for awhile... whether he‘s The Shepherd‘s Son in your version or The Clown, as in mine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the man for this role. I think his ability to do singing, dancing, and physical comedy would make this role very very memorable.

🍷) Classic? Is Shakespeare considered classic?
🍷) I can't remember. 😝
🍷) Yes! And I can't carry a tune to save my life. 🎤🎤

I admire this play more than I love it. It's a hard play to connect with emotionally, but there's so much going on that speaks to Shakespeare's maturity. It takes the jealousy & patriarchal poison of Othello & reworks it with the pastoral fantasy of As You Like It. But danger intrudes into this fantasy: there are pick-pocketing tricksters & bears to watch out for 🐻 The themes of art/rebirth/nature are aspects that I'll be mulling over for awhile.
I realise that I'm very much out of the loop where younger actors are concerned. A lot of the teen TV shows I enjoy are pure #braincandy and I can't imagine any of the actors taking on Shakespearean roles 😆 However I did enjoy Eliza Scanlen's unnerving performance in Sharp Objects and would cast her as Perdita. An interesting switch from the dark and grim to a role that symbolises rebirth, hope, and love.
#ShakespeareReadAlong @merelybookish
I choose Morgan Freeman to play Time. I‘m playing catch up here. #shakespearereadalong @merelybookish
I wanted a fresh face for Perdita. Bailee Madison is unknown to me, but she‘s got a filmography going back to Bridge to Terebithia when she was 6, so I think she has the chops. #shakespearereadalong (Anyone ever actually see her in anything?) @merelybookish
The Winter's Tale: I would cast Gal Gadot in the role of Perdita.
#shakespearereadalong #thewinterstale @merelybookish
The ending was not what I expected at all. It was like Leontes got a personality transplant or his meds were finally properly regulated. So weird and random, not to mention the explanation of how he recognised a daughter he saw once when she was just 2 days old just doesn‘t work for me. This wasn‘t one of Shakespeare‘s better plays.
#shakespeare #shakespearereadalong #thewinterstale
I think this may be my favorite Shakespeare so far. I haven't read them all yet. You get the best of both worlds in this one being a tragedy and a comedy. I really liked the characters and it seemed each had an important part. Great ending!!! (Trying not to give too much away!)
@merelybookish

Perdita: Zendaya
I think she's absolutely beautiful. Thank you @merelybookish for hosting and making this so much fun!
#Shakespearereadalong
My Perdita is Dakota Fanning. I needed someone who was cute as a kid and someone to reckon with as a young woman and she just came to mind. If anyone is going to tell off Leontes, is going to be her.
#shakespeare #shakespearereadalong #thewinterstale
I know she‘s not even remotely close to this age anymore, I still like her. I think she‘s sweet and talented enough to pull off this part in just the way I‘m imagining it.
Okay #shakespearereadalong stalwarts, it's the last week of casting. Act V and it's Perdita. (Right?!)
My pick is Haley Lu Richardson because I LOVED her performance in Columbus soooo much. (If you have not seen that film, I highly recommend.) Plus I'm not really up on young actresses.
So hit me up. Who should play Perdita?
Remember, there's $20 to win!
Thanks to everyone who has participated! It's been fun for me. I hope it's been fun for you!
I was despairing that no one seemed to clearly stand up to the crazy king, with all the lords just barely daring to contradict him.
Late again for the #shakespearereadalong but happy to finally get to this play
Although parts of this felt very familiar after reading some of his other plays, there were definitely some big surprises that I didn‘t see coming and I completely enjoyed. One more pick for our #ShakespeareReadAlong 👍
Well, I had to find a way to cast Cillian Murphy in this 😆 And while I would love to have him hang around for as long as possible, some of the bigger male roles like Florizel are kind of boring. So I'm going to cast him as the trickster Autolycus. The absurdism of Act 4 would be great material for an actor like him ❤️
@merelybookish #ShakespeareReadAlong
Just plowed through Act IV...weird. All I can say is weird. I guess I've got to cast that one part after all. Who knew?
#shakespearereadalong #shakespeare #thewinterstale
Well, I finally got my Sicilia side all together, and I‘m adopting your Time @GingerAntics
I‘ll work on Bohemia later this week, after I read a bit more about some of their characters in the next act.😉
#ShakespeareReadAlong
The Winter's Tale: I think Matthew McConaughey woyld be perfect in the role of Polixenes. #shakespearereadalong #thewinterstale @merelybookish
Florizel - Chris Pine
Who wouldn't want to elope with this guy right here? 😂
@merelybookish
#Shakespearereadalong
I lied. This is my last one for now. I'm stealing @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 's choice for Camillo and making him Apollo. After being conjured he's going to stalk the stage at will and refill Time's cocktails (someone's got to keep her going!). At some point he will smack Leontes (who is now played by Wallace Shawn) upside the head. #shakespearereadalong #shakespeare #thewinterstale
