pickThis novel dealt with a hundred year old murder. The genre was YA historical fiction plus some modern day. Set in Tulsa Oklahoma, this novel took the reader back to the race war of 1921. It had visions of live, hatred, compassion and courage. The characters were widespread in their personalities and bravery. Others were vile and extremely unlikable. 4/5⭐️
pick4 stars ⭐️ I don‘t usually like YA but this was so enjoyable. I was sucked into the 1920s plot. It leaves you wanting to learn more- it just gives you a small taste of the Tulsa race riots. As this novel embarks upon the race riot, which took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, students travel from the present to the past, trying to find out whose body was buried behind Rowan‘s home.
Although my classes are at different parts in this book, we all know that a body from 100 years ago has been found and right now, we don‘t like William nor Vernon. Thank you Jennifer Latham for writing a novel that has captivated my students.

It's a historical YA with dual perspectives: one a high school student investigating the mystery of a body unearthed during renovations on her family's Tulsa home, and the other a high school student in 1921 Tulsa who gets caught up in the Tulsa "race riot." It felt very YA with teenage perspectives and sanitized language & events. Although intense in spots, it also avoids some hard history.
pickA present day mystery uncovers secrets from the night of the Tulsa Massacre. A very important piece of history I never knew until I was an adult. Books like this should be available to all teens to learn a more complete history of the US.

so-soThe Tulsa race massacre was horrifying and this novel explores a fictionalized version of those events. It flashes back and forth from the 1921 timeline to the present day. The story is good, but the writing is filled with clichés and hard to swallow at times. The modern-day plot was much less compelling and the characters were very one-dimensional. Still worth reading, but probably better for a younger audience.
pickI couldn‘t put this down. There‘s nothing more terrifying than angry cis straight white men. I was satisfied with the ending. ✨ 80 percent done with this book and I‘m 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 loving it so far. Definitely placing this on my list of favorite reads for the year.

pickWhy do I love historical fiction?! They just make me angry! Really interesting book with tons of evaluation and information about racism. Honestly, the exact same crap is happening now so I couldn't even be like "man, thank God it's not like that anymore!"

pickGreat read! It reads like a mystery and I thoroughly enjoyed the alternating viewpoints between the past and modern day. I learned something about the Tulsa race riot in 1921 that I had never learned about. Highly recommended.

A YA novel told in the present day by Rowan, a bi-racial teen who intends to find the identity of the skeleton unearthed by a construction crew behind her home. Alternating chapters are told by William, a bi-racial teen in 1921 who survived the riot.
While I wanted the story to give me more, it kept me guessing and was a decent YA read.
Restarting this book. I had it from the library and had to return it. Invested in my own copy. Love reading cozied up on a Sunday night! #mmdbookclub

pickWOW! I was seriously blown away by this book. I fell in love with the characters and couldn't put it down. The pacing was great and the way the author weaved the past and present was magnificent. I got chills at the end and am getting them again now just thinking about it. I highly recommend!

pickCan you really like a book while also finding it hard to read? That is what my experience was with this book. The dual narrative and the mystery in it were very engaging. But the historical parts were sometimes hard to read, but that's part of what books can do for us -- make us aware of parts of history (and the present) that are hard to face.
I buckled down and finished these two books, which were good but I had been dragging my feet because I've been really distracted. I finished at lunch, because I was determined to count them in August.
pickIt took me a while to finish this and I was iffy at first, but it ended up being a great read. Thanks to this book and Between Shades of Grey, I've learned that I really enjoy historical fiction. For both books, I actually wasn't aware of the events that occurred before reading so it was interesting to have that added level of learning also while reading a fiction book.

Rowan tries to solve the mystery while her own life is uncertain. I love how the plot raises more questions than provides answers making it hard to put down. A wonderful intensive read.
pickI read this book several days ago and can't stop thinking about it. This book has strong themes of friendship and identity plus it tells of events I had never heard of, which has caused me to learn more on my own. I love books that inspire me to do research. I can tell this one will be with me for a long time.
