A great read on the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic #motivation. A great companion to Carol Dweck‘s Mindset.

It‘s my first day of teacher development before the 20-21 school year. Here is my classroom 😭 we read the tagged book over the summer for this week. I think some points it makes about what motivates and doesn‘t motivate people are very useful. It talks about ways to foster autonomy, mastery, and purpose, since those seem to be the key ingredients to intrinsically motivating people. ⬇️

heikemarie It talks about the ways in which our management and business systems are outdated. While it wasn‘t focused on children, there is stuff that can apply, a few of the studies were focused on kids, and the appendix has more resources to think about the applications of this stuff in schools. Like most brief business-oriented books, it was a little light on the science and context for me. ⬇️ 4y
heikemarie I also know my organization won‘t implement this stuff for its teachers, so it feels hypocritical to talk about it for kids. But this is also something I come to expect from professional development. 😬 4y
Pruzy Nice computer set up! 4y
heikemarie @Pruzy Thanks!! I like to say my husband‘s love language is technology, so he built this for me. It makes a huge difference for teaching online! 4y

Reading this book during the current pandemic was interesting. "Drive" offers a different view of how our work could look, if we were to heed scientists and researchers who have a deeper understanding of what motivates people. Spoiler alert: most of the time, it's not rewards and punishments. Similar to Carol Dweck's "Mindset", this book is very readable and offers a great deal of real-world examples, not just abstract ideas for improvement.

Have you ever asked yourself the question, “what is the purpose”? This book is a great place to find the answer.

Do you guys have any recommendations for books on the topic of motivation? I'm in a motivation for learning class, and we're doing a book club in a couple weeks. I chose Drive by Daniel Pink, but this is a topic I'm really interested in and I'm sure I'll want to read more on the subject.

Let me know. 🤓

ravenlee Does this work? I‘ve heard really good things about it but haven‘t read it yet. 5y
Rachel.Rencher @ravenlee yeah! That type of book is exactly what I was looking for. I'm trying to learn how to help high schoolers be intrinsically motivated to work. Thank you! 🤗 5y
ravenlee I hope you find some good ones! I‘d be interested to hear what you think of Grit. 5y

A worthwhile read for anyone looking to find harmony between their passions and their professional life. Perhaps not paradigm shattering, but a good, thought-provoking introduction to the concept of intrinsic rewards.

ravenlee Would some “historical inspired romance” be okay? I have a few Harlequin books that are too heavily Christian for me to enjoy them, but they‘re written pretty well otherwise. 6y
BeansPage @ravenlee yes those would be absolutely perfect! email me and I'll send you the address of where you can ship them to. BTW make sure you send them via Media Mail. It's way cheaper. 6y
TheSpineView I have a box of books all ready to send you. Would you please send me your address again. I lost it.. sigh... my email is lisa@thespineview.com 6y

BeansPage @jpmcwisemorgan if I could have them before January 1st that would be amazing 🙏🏻🤗 6y
jpmcwisemorgan Ok that‘s good, I wanted to try to hit up Recycled Reads because sometimes they have coffee table kind of books. I have some mysteries already to send but if I can send some other books I‘m going to do that. 6y
BeansPage @jpmcwisemorgan that is wonderful thank you! My mother and I have both been scouring Goodwills in the area as well. We have come up with a few that are large print which is also what they're looking for and some great picture books with bright colors. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan Wow! You found large print? That‘s hard to come by. I worked in a thrift store for 7 years and I don‘t recall seeing much in large print. That‘s a great find! 6y
BeansPage @jpmcwisemorgan IKR? I'm just as amazed as you are! 😲 6y

I've just started this now, and I'm already intrigued by the research and what else he has to share! I enjoy reading #SelfHelp book, with an aim to learn and improve my skills, wellbeing, knowledge and so much more!
Are you self help nerd? What are some of your favourite topics?

After watching Pink‘s TED Talk years ago, I enthusiastically added Drive to my list of books to read. This book was such a disappointment. Watch the talk and read the first chapter. Then bail before his incessant jargon rehashing studies other researchers have conducted numbs your mind.

RinaBrahmbhattBarot Oh..I've just started now! Was it too much research? 6y
DogMomIrene @MyBookSwapClub If I remember correctly, he did focus a lot on research, but it was his repeating it that was annoying. Rehash after rehash with little new research. I do wonder if I noticed more repetition because I listened to the audiobook. I‘ve noticed that when authors repeat certain words or phrases a lot, it annoys me more in audiobook format. I think my eyes just scan right over the repetitions if I‘m reading print. 6y

I listened to this for work. My team has been working on transforming our performance review process over the past year and this book has been cited so much in all the research we‘ve done that I felt I needed to read it. Turns out I already knew pretty much everything in it so it wasn‘t too enlightening, but it‘s still important. Really easy listen with simply stated tenets; good for HR people, business leaders, consultants, etc.

Just finished my first book of 2018! A very good book, shares some groundbreaking ideas. The author read it well. It wasn‘t the most exciting page turner I‘ve ever read, but it is definitely an important book. I like how the authors includes several additional resources for further reading and learning. Teaches you about the value of intrinsic motivation and the pursuit of greatness for its own sake. 🙌🏻
