so-soThe premise of this is fantastic: Queen Victoria takes Vlad Tepes as her Prince Consort, making vampirism fashionable—while Jack the Ripper stalks vampire women by night. But the book itself was disappointing. Newman got caught up in name-dropping literary & historical characters almost as a substitute for good world-building. The narrative was a bit of a slog, and though things pick up toward the end, it was too little too late for me.
Closing out my November 5th with tea in this seasonally-appropriate mug (remember, remember…) and this book I didn‘t manage to read in October!
This spooky season I‘m throwing it all the way back to the vampire origin stories. I‘m wanting to read classic vampire stories that shaped the way we imagine vampires. And I‘m thoroughly enjoying my journey.

pickI personally love these books. Kim Newman is one of my favorite newer authors and his use of characters in history and pop culture is just fantastic.

so-soThis was a really interesting take on events after Dracula.
I am a massive history dork when it comes to Jack The Ripper so I did find this story interesting from that angle - vampires have shown themselves and integrated themselves into society - sort of, and now someone is killing vampire women..
I found it pretty slow paced until the end where all hell broke lose, overall it was good but I‘m not sure I‘d read the next in the series 🥀

I found this book on sale awhile ago for about $2-3 so I thought I would give it a try now. I‘m reading it and having a cheap homemade charcuterie board of two cheeses, pickles, Smith‘s crackers, dried mangos, and a fig jam I found near the cheeses. The board was excellent 😋

so-soJack the Ripper is terrorizing London, with the twist that Dracula defeated and killed Van Helsing and is now the Prince Consort of England. And vampires live side by side with the “warm.” Great premise and I enjoyed most of it, but I found it overly bloated with characters and unnecessary storylines.

Genevieve and Beauregard were amazing, as was Jack the Ripper in his madness. It took a little while to get going, and a little longer for me to get all the characters figured out, but it was well written and fun to read.
The name dropping got a little out of hand especially when the characters didn't actually feature half the time!

So I'm nearly 4 hours in now and I'm starting to get the hang of the characters now (or at least I think I am 😅). I think this is definitely a book that would work better in print for me. The name dropping this book does is fun, but maybe a touch over the top? 🤔

I'm enjoying the story, but I'm struggling to get the characters straight in my head. Genevieve and Beauregard (most of the time) I can follow, but there are so many minor (I think) characters that confuse me 🤔
I'm sticking with it, but I'm thinking that this one would be better in print... even though I really like the narrator, there just seem to be too many English Gentlemen!

so-soThis was the Victorian supernatural classic equivalent of Ready Player One, but better.
The first important thing to note is that Count Dracula was not killed. Instead he has turned Queen Victoria and is now Prince Consort. The story then follows the Jack the Ripper murders and the way this world is changed.
This was fun, not perfect. It slogged a bit, especially in the middle, and I think it suffers a bit from 'first in a series' syndrome.
I am a vampire girl through and through but I‘m having the hardest time getting into this book! Debating on whether to put it back on the shelf and try again another time 😔⚰️🦇

so-soI finally finished Anno Dracula - it was okay, but I was disappointed that Newman introduced so many fictional and real life contemporaries and then did nothing with them.
On a different note, I'm in a major book slump. For the third weekend in a row I haven't completed a single book! (Normally I can easily chew through two or three books in a weekend.)
