More Than This | Patrick Ness
From two-time Carnegie Medal winner Patrick Ness comes an enthralling and provocative new novel chronicling the life or perhaps afterlife of a teen trapped in a crumbling, abandoned world. A boy named Seth drowns, desperate and alone in his final moments, losing his life as the pounding sea claims him. But then he wakes. He is naked, thirsty, starving. But alive. How is that possible? He remembers dying, his bones breaking, his skull dashed upon the rocks. So how is he here? And where is this place? It looks like the suburban English town where he lived as a child, before an unthinkable tragedy happened and his family moved to America. But the neighborhood around his old house is overgrown, covered in dust, and completely abandoned. Whats going on? And why is it that whenever he closes his eyes, he falls prey to vivid, agonizing memories that seem more real than the world around him? Seth begins a search for answers, hoping that he might not be alone, that this might not be the hell he fears it to be, that there might be more than just this. . . .

I mostly liked this. It‘s sort of dark yet encouraging, but I felt like there were more questions than answers. I like books like that to some degree, but I felt like this one just needed a little more closure.

17 year old Seth drowns at sea off Washington State and wakes up in a deserted, post-apocalyptic version of the English town where he lived until he was nine. Is this Hell?

Some pacing problems particularly in the early part before Regine and Tomasz appear, but still an enjoyable and thought-provoking story.

Even though I have not read to far into the book yet, it has been really eye catching and entertaining. For a person who does not like reading this was a good book. It has lots of scene description and action. The overall theme of after life is also very interesting. The only problem with this book is that it‘s very long. If you enjoy long books, this is a book for you.

MissYaremcio Thank you for the review Carson! I needed more on the summary of the book and how the POV is established. 2.5/6 3y

If you like books that will have you hooked from the start to the beginning and always introduce something new or something to add more suspense to the plot this book is just for you. Even though I didn't quite finish the book I made it about a quarter way through it. So far a kid drowned and wakes up in a different world that he thinks is his own personal hell. He has flashbacks of memories that haunted him his whole life.

vand.ezra The theme of this novel is what you can actually feel and what the reality is around you. This is because he wakes up in a whole new world and questions his life and what is around him whether his actually dead or not or where he is and what has happened to himself. 4y
MissYaremcio Good to know that you are enjoying this book! Patrick Ness is an amazing author and if you like this one, he has a really cool dystopian series you may like! 6/6 4y

A dark and beautiful story of truth versus reality. And how to explore the difference. A ya novel set in a matrix world where three people get caught in the real world versus the world of their parents making. I really enjoyed this plot and though the ending is vague it was such a good book about love, loss and yearning for more.

1. I miss browsing bookstores & also browsing TJ Maxx. I don‘t need more books 😂 but damn if my bra isn‘t screaming to be relieved from duty & replaced with a fresh find from the Max‘s sweet “lingerie” department 😬😧🤣.

2. I‘ve read 20 books during isolation, so my reading increased! I finished my 2020 Goodreads goal of 25 books!

I‘ll try tagging @catiewithac & @Meaw_catlady

I just finished reading this book.
Exciting and maybe just slightly bewildering, but always gripping and never boring. I was attached to this book from the beginning of this reading journey to the end. I was conflicted by the ending, but haven‘t stopped thinking about it since I put it down. That‘s a good thing, right?

Balibee146 BBC kids home school programmes this week showed a recorded event of him meeting teenagers in Edinburgh during an old festival event when this was published. He spoke compellingly about this.... Said that the whole book was in the last line.... I lent my copy a week after it came out and my bestie is still to read and return all these years later lol... Wish I could remember that line! 5y
Kirstjaydeshaw @Balibee146 let me help you out! It reads: “Are you ready?” his friends ask him. He thinks, Yes. He thinks, Go in swinging. And he says, “I‘m ready.” 5y
Kirstjaydeshaw @Balibee146 “Go in swinging” as in advice from Regine earlier on in the book 5y
Balibee146 Thanks @Kirstjaydeshaw that fits with what he was saying to the kids... one of these days my friend will give it back and I'll re read 😁👍 5y

Finished this one today. It was good but hard to discuss without massive spoilers. Unique and hopeful though.

In trying to consume more queer media in June, I do kind of wish there was a place listing all queer media and whether or not the characters survive. So many focus on the tragic queer narrative and I can‘t help but wonder how we‘re meant to envision our futures, to say nothing of the rest of the world.

I haven‘t a clue where this story is going or what‘s actually going on, but the writing is certainly quotable. And much of what is happening in the story works on two levels, literal and metaphorical, me gusta.

Hey guys, It‘s been a bit 😞😢in my life lately.. but I‘m back with another post, as life goes on. More Than This by Patrick Ness is such a great book! It you guys dig the matrix, you‘ll love it. It‘s got super sci fi/dystopia feels, full of incredible well rounded characters. Has anyone here read it? What did you think?

More Than This by Patrick Ness is easily of my favorite books of all time! With every page, you uncover- or begin, for that matter- a new mystery. You fall in love with (most) of the characters and are at least extremely passionate about the others. You really learn to adore all their flaws. This is a really thoughtful “what-if” book, and offers you a chance to really think about the events taking place. My only complaint is that it isn‘t endless.

is it a good or bad to end a book with questions?!?
i loved this book until the end. what happens next? will seth, and tomasz, and regine be Okay?
how does the information they gained change the world (all versions of reality)?
help! i need answers or at least an epilogue because a sequel would be too much to handle emotionally.

I've had a run of average books this week but this week and truly broke the disappointing streak. A fast, pacy, clever, funny, heartbreaking, tender, thought-provoking, uplifting YA blockbuster. All the adjectives. Nearly 500 pages just flew by but the story will linger. Image by cover designer Matt Roeser

More Than This by Patrick Ness: 3.5/5⭐️. Okay to begin with it was not exactly bad. It had so many OMG moments. . But also, the ending, to me, was disappointing. Like the plot was intense intense intense and then it just falls flat. Like.why. So, if you're into some kind of horror sci-fi + existential philosophy, this book might be a 4 or a 5 for you. My soul felt drenched reading this, I became emotional and stuff lol. It really messed me up smh.

Hard to choose a #favoritecover but I do notice my favorites tend to be highly stylized with great use of colour and font. I also love when the publishers play with covers and dust jackets by adding die cuts or unusual material or raised font, etc. Wish I knew all the technical terms :p #riotgrams #bookriot
