Who Put This Song On? | Morgan Parker

With honest vulnerability, Morgan Parker shares her coming of age in a fictional format. She questions the values of her Christian school community, is frustrated by the lack of diverse representation, finds her tribe who help each other through various challenges & push each other gently toward being themselves, and navigates through her mental health diagnosis. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Having suffered depression as a teen and still bouts of it as an adult, Morgan Parker is dead on with the thoughts & feelings as well as the reactions of others. Such an accurate chapter title.

LibrarianRyan That is a good chapter title 5y

Given how much stress and anxiety I‘ve been under with this whole COVID-19 situation, I feel good about how much reading I got done this month. I had to make myself take a couple of mental health days just to breathe, but I‘ve never been happier to have books as an escape mechanism.

Hopefully things will get back to normal sooner than later ... but until then, at least I know I‘ll have all the time in the world to tackle my always growing TBR.

I don‘t have enough words to express how much I loved this book. Morgan Parker is a beyond talented. Her writing is poetic and poignant. She pulls the reset into a deep story about race and depression and what it is like going through so many issues as a teen. It reminded me of the movie Saved mixed with the style of Angie Thomas. This book deserves attention - everyone should be reading it. #booked2020 #milennialauthor

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 out of 5 stars. Morgan is 17. She is super-emo and attends Christian High School. She doesn‘t fit in. AT. ALL. She loves writing and music but that isn‘t always enough. She just wants to be understood and to understand herself. She is 17.

Morgan is an endearing misfit dealing with clinical depression & anxiety in a high school with few other Black students. An excellent #audio production made this autobiographical novel particularly appealing. Bahni Turpin is the main narrator, along with five other contributors plus an afterword by the author. If you like books by Elizabeth Acevedo and Renée Watson, this is definitely for you. #ownvoices #YA

David knows a bookstore that is neither Mormon nor a Barnes and Noble. Do I mind taking a little ride? Abso-freaking-lutely not.

umbrellagirl How is a Mormon bookshop different from a non-Mormon bookshop? 5y
Lindy @umbrellagirl I guess you haven‘t had the experience of accidentally walking into a Christian bookshop, thinking it was a regular bookshop. 5y
umbrellagirl @Lindy No, but I guess a Mormon bookshop would be similar. 5y
Lindy @umbrellagirl Yes, exactly. All of the books have a religious slant, including the fiction. 5y

Sitting at my mom‘s vanity, I stare brutally at my face in the mirror. I guess I‘ll always have this face, which is super annoying.

This was beautiful. Parker packs a LOT into this book. Inspired by the author‘s own experiences, the protagonist grapples with anxiety/depression while trying to define herself. She‘s one of only a few Black kids at a very conservative Christian high school. I really loved Parker‘s heartfelt letter to readers at the end in which she tells kids going through similar situations that they are loved and shares tips on getting into therapy.

For a book about anxiety/ depression, this one is keeping me chuckling. I‘m now considering posting “be the syllabus you wish to see in this world” somewhere in my classroom.

Morgan Parker uses her own experiences as a teenager to write this novel about a 15 year old, Morgan Parker, who struggles to find balance after being diagnosed with depression. Not only that, she is one of the only students of color in her private Christian school (and in her neighborhood, suburbia) where she is discouraged from having her own opinions. ⤵️

ReadingEnvy I like how her identity is also part emo, with all the appropriate musical references, and also a slight tribute to The Golden Notebook maybe?
.
I had a copy of this from the publisher through NetGalley. I am already a fan of Parker's poetry and although this YA novel is for a different audience, I think her selfhood and strength shine through here as well. This came out September 24, 2019.

This chapter title is hilarious and fits the tone of the book so far, self deprecating with an underlying feeling of anxiety.....

MandaMT I love the chapter titles in this book! 5y

I‘m grateful for authors writing YA about depression & anxiety in raw, real, heartfelt ways, for authors writing YA differently. Morgan Parker‘s YA novel is like a solid mix CD given to you by someone who knows and loves you and has seen your ugly parts.
