Given how much stress and anxiety I‘ve been under with this whole COVID-19 situation, I feel good about how much reading I got done this month. I had to make myself take a couple of mental health days just to breathe, but I‘ve never been happier to have books as an escape mechanism.
Hopefully things will get back to normal sooner than later ... but until then, at least I know I‘ll have all the time in the world to tackle my always growing TBR.
pickI don‘t have enough words to express how much I loved this book. Morgan Parker is a beyond talented. Her writing is poetic and poignant. She pulls the reset into a deep story about race and depression and what it is like going through so many issues as a teen. It reminded me of the movie Saved mixed with the style of Angie Thomas. This book deserves attention - everyone should be reading it. #booked2020 #milennialauthor

pickMorgan is an endearing misfit dealing with clinical depression & anxiety in a high school with few other Black students. An excellent #audio production made this autobiographical novel particularly appealing. Bahni Turpin is the main narrator, along with five other contributors plus an afterword by the author. If you like books by Elizabeth Acevedo and Renée Watson, this is definitely for you. #ownvoices #YA

pickThis was beautiful. Parker packs a LOT into this book. Inspired by the author‘s own experiences, the protagonist grapples with anxiety/depression while trying to define herself. She‘s one of only a few Black kids at a very conservative Christian high school. I really loved Parker‘s heartfelt letter to readers at the end in which she tells kids going through similar situations that they are loved and shares tips on getting into therapy.
For a book about anxiety/ depression, this one is keeping me chuckling. I‘m now considering posting “be the syllabus you wish to see in this world” somewhere in my classroom.

Not only that, she is one of the only students of color in her private Christian school (and in her neighborhood, suburbia) where she is discouraged from having her own opinions. ⤵️
This chapter title is hilarious and fits the tone of the book so far, self deprecating with an underlying feeling of anxiety.....
pickI‘m grateful for authors writing YA about depression & anxiety in raw, real, heartfelt ways, for authors writing YA differently. Morgan Parker‘s YA novel is like a solid mix CD given to you by someone who knows and loves you and has seen your ugly parts.
