Pickpick

First off - My man Friday. I now know the origin of this term I‘ve heard so often. I didn‘t realize this book covered so much adventure outside of his years of seclusion on the island. I had no idea he returned to what ended up his inhabited island. He glides right over meeting his wife, having children, wife dying, putting children in care of others, and taking off on adventure once again. Which would have been probably more interesting to me. ⬇️

CogsOfEncouragement But now I‘ve read another long enduring classic and I‘m sure I‘m the better for it. I give it 3 stars Thanks to @TheAromaOfBooks for hosting #RandomClassic 5mo
TheAromaofBooks Thanks for reading with me!! I agree - it was an interesting read, but not one I see myself coming to again and again lol 5mo

#OnThisDay in 1719 Robinson Crusoe was published. A hallmark of realistic fiction, and (possibly) one of the first English novels, Crusoe introduced the "Man (or Girl) Friday" to the English language. Originally published as a tale written by Crusoe himself, many mistook it for a true travelogue. Incredibly popular from the moment of publication, four editions were published before the end of 1719 #HistoryGetsLIT

TheAromaofBooks I keep meaning to reread this one. I really enjoyed it back in high school. 3y
TheKidUpstairs @TheAromaofBooks it is one of those books that I've never read, but feel like I vaguely know. But I also think I probably get it all mixed up with other shipwreck/island/etc books. Someday I'll read it (as I say to myself about so so so many classics 🤣🤣) 3y

#BookCoverChallenge
Day 212.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

#friyayintro @howjessreads
1. I've actually never read Robinson Crusoe but if I'm going to be deserted on an island I might as well get meta about it.
2. Socks
3. The Zugspitze 2,962 m above sea level (thanks, Google!)
4. 🤔 Okra?
5. No

ravenlee The Zugspitze is mine too! I read Robinson Crusoe earlier this year. It was...a product of its times. 5y
Sace @ravenlee that visual pause has me 😂 5y
ravenlee I‘m glad that I read it, but I can‘t say I enjoyed it. 5y

Because I don't think I've ever actually read it, and I want to read Jane Gardam's Crusoe's Daughter next, so I thought I probably should.

merelybookish I like this book a lot even tho the title character is an asshole. I used to teach it and each semester.was surprised by how modern and astute it was. 5y

#TrivialThursday @GarthRanzz

1 - Penny Reid. We could talk about all the wonderful characters and we could knit together
2 - tough one, based on my current playlist: Imagine Dragons
3 - a large bottle of a really good single malt whisky, for medicinal purposes, of course

GarthRanzz Of course! I forgot something for medicinal use! 😊 7y

I'm very excited to have found a beautiful, old copy of one of my favourite books! Though I'm a little scared that the fragile pages might fall apart if I read it!

Izai.Amorim I love it as well. Was very disappointed when my son refused to read it. 8y

Mehso-so

Finally finished this book for my next MA module. I found some aspects fascinating but I hated the character of Robinson Crusoe. I know he's a product of his time but he was arrogant, racist and thought he was superior to every other character he came across!

MyBookLife I haven't read it yet. Maybe it's more enjoyable if all the references is understood?? (Maybe you got them, but I don't..) 8y
merelybookish Agreed! I like to believe Defoe wants readers to be critical of RC. 8y
IReadThereforeIBlog Not just that but you know he was doing something freaky with those goats. 8y

"It happened one day about noon, going towards my boat, I was exceedingly surprised with the print of a mans naked foot on the shore..."
For 24 years Robinson Crusoe thought he was alone on the island he was shipwrecked on, until he stumbled across another person...
#UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding You have read many classics Stacie! So glad you put forth the effort to read these titles this semester. Resource? Grade level? Being that this is a children's literature course, this particular story would not be appropriate at the elementary level. 8y

It was said #robinsoncrusoe written by #danieldefoe was inspired by Alexander Selkirk who after being marooned on an island spent more than four years on that island. Many have debunked the theory that Crusoe is Selkirk as the two had different stories. Still Crusoe story can be inspired by the story of Selkirk and Defoe made it into his own. Beautiful picture of Robinson Crusoe Island above. #book📖 #bookstagram #bookworm #booknerd #booklover

Hey everyone, today is #NationalRobinsonCrusoeDay!!! Any fans out there?

Leniverse No. Most boring book ever. I used to read it out loud to my firstborn when she was a baby and wouldn't sleep. Half a chapter of droning and she'd be passed out at last. 8y
Aseleener I read it for my classic lit book club a couple years back. I liked it more than I thought I would. 8y
samwinchester90 I was personally a fan - I found the survivalist aspects fascinating. Also, had tons of fun arguing about it with @kdwinchester in our Brit Novel class. 8y

My first read on Serial Reader. Exciting and suspenseful at times. But a so-so overall. I kept imagining a reality show challenge when Robinson Crusoe was problem solving on the island.

Next book club book. Never read it all the way through before. Finding it barely used at the used bookstore for $4 = bonus!
