Turn of the Key
Turn of the Key | Ruth Ware
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, The Lying Game, and The Death of Mrs. Westaway comes Ruth Ware's highly anticipated fifth novel. When she stumbles across the ad, she's looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss--a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten--by the luxurious "smart" home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family. What she doesn't know is that she's stepping into a nightmare--one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder. Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the unravelling events that led to her incarceration. It wasn't just the constant surveillance from the cameras installed around the house, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn't just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn't even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman, Jack Grant. It was everything. She knows she's made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post, and that her behavior toward the children wasn't always ideal. She's not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she's not guilty--at least not of murder. Which means someone else is. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, The Turn of the Key is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

I had high hopes for this one , it was interesting and had creepy vibes , I like her writing I am just not a fan of the drawn out stories with unsatisfying endings
#ReadAway2024 book 41

DieAReader I hope your #Next read is more satisfying🤓📚 4w
bumpinthenight For me, her concepts have a lot of potential but like you said, it doesn‘t really come together or hit the mark like I want it to a lot of the time. 4w
Areader2 @bumpinthenight I agree ,same with the last book I read Riley Sagers Middle of the Night, and God of the Woods both had so much potential so much time setting up these great complex storylines but then the ending is simpler and unfulfilling, I don‘t regret reading them so I guess that‘s important ha 4w

Read for my local library's new book group. Oh dear, I found this contemporary re-write of "The Turn of the Screw" a bit meh. ? I liked /was unsettled by the Smart house idea, but it became a pile-up of implausibilities and the letter format doesn't work: why is she telling the lawyer how she does her hair? And I'm meant to believe she recalled all that reported speech?! As for the ending, don't start me. Could I put it down, though? I could not.

Heard lots of good things about this book, but agreed with the negative things I read. The ending seemed rushed and mashed together without much satisfaction.

Lots of spooky scenes and characters that make you shake your head.

After reading the Woman in Cabin 10 and In a Dark, Dark Wood, I thought I was done with Ruth Ware - not because I don't like her. I just think other authors do it better. But this surprised me. I really fell in love with Ellie! There were quite a few twists that I absolutely did not see coming. Also, I'd love a book with Jack as the main character. There's more there and I want answers.

This book was delightfully creepy at times with a twist I didn't see coming but took wayyy too long to get there and get to the point. It was a written series of letters, but that seemed to only make how long it was make less sense. ⭐️⭐️/5

This had been in my TBR pile for a long time so I'm thankful for #AuthorAMonth and @soubhiville for giving me the push I needed to pick it up. In the end it wasn't for me (didn't like the MC at all) and I probably won't read any more Ruth Ware, but I'm glad to have an informed opinion now!

Y‘all. Everything hurts and I‘m dying. I rode 51 miles on my peloton today and have 49 to do tomorrow, so it‘s time for a bath and a book. The hubs is making me a pina colada, and it‘s relaxation time! #myfannyhurts #howwillievergetdownthestairs #imayhavetoscootdownonmysorefanny #sendhelp

Soubhiville Wow, go you! I‘m very impressed! Enjoy your relaxation time, you deserve it. 2y
Cortg That‘s a long ride! 2y
marleed Wow! I‘ve never ridden a peloton, but my son is obsessed with his and specific classes. He goest to NYC to film for NYE (tough job but someone has to do it!), and he was most excited to attend a live class. I hope your bath is soothing! 2y
BarkingMadRead @marleed that is so cool! I want to do a live ride in NYC, but I haven‘t managed to get into one yet, and I live in SC so I can‘t really do the waitlist. I‘ll have my day eventually! 2y
marleed @BarkingMadRead Well to his major disappointment the SW Airlines issues happened that week. Sure enough he was flying there via SWA. He still got there but had to fly to New Jersey and Uber to Manhattan forcing him to miss his opportunity for the live class! He was so close, but hard to really pity a dude wandering TimesSquare with a press pass on NYE! 2y

Ok, so now three Ware novels under my belt, I can firmly say her brand of mystery isn‘t for me. This had a fun set up that took *ages* to get cooking. The turn (of the screw) wasn‘t much of a leap or a surprise. The dangling of a carrot isn‘t good suspense to me because all things being true, Rowan isn‘t a character you want to root for throughout. I probably liked this best but wish it was more…*more*. #AuthorAMonth

#AuthoraMonth @Soubvihille A modern rewrite of Henry James's THE TURN OF THE SCREW, this book takes us to the highlands of Scotland where a nanny in charge of three girls is in jail for a murder that she writes (to an attorney) she didn't commit. Fast-paced, slow in the middle, weird noises, a Happy house app that terrifies, a perhaps haunted house, this book has it all. After laying out a well-plotted story, though, the ending felt a bit rushed.

IndoorDame I remember listening to this on audio on a particularly atmospheric winter night. Maybe I need to listen to all thrillers on audio in the dark to properly appreciate them 🤔 2y
dabbe @IndoorDame Atmosphere is everything to a thriller, but I don't know if I could listen. I might get even more scared! 🤣 2y
IndoorDame @dabbe I like the being scared, but I usually only do audio at night if I know I can stay up late to finish. I‘m not brave enough to go to sleep before the story ends 🤣🤣 2y

A difficult book to review. It was set up well initially, but was then so slow paced that at times I could only read in small sections. The ending was much better but I feel it had more potential than it achieved. Overall a soft pick.

7th book finished for #AwesomeApril

dabbe I just finished this last night and TOTALLY agree with all you've said. I also found the ending extremely rushed; I could barely keep up with all that was happening. After the slowness of the middle part, it was a bit disconcerting. 2y
Andrew65 @dabbe Good to see I‘m not alone with my thoughts on this, and I definitely agree about the ending feeling rushed, and almost felt short changed. (edited) 2y
dabbe @Andrew65 “Short-changed“ is an excellent term for it. And I wanted more at the end, like where did she end up? I have an idea, but still. Sometimes I do like answers carved in stone! 🤣 2y

I am working on my ridiculous TBR this year. So you will see many older books being posted. I promise im going to make a huge dent in my shelves. 😁. This one..eh.. It was a slow start.. picked up and got me interested in the middle.. fell flat after the twist.. which i did not guess ahead of time.. then was figureoutable. Lots of unreliable characters. I give it 🗝🗝🗝

This was an entertaining twisty thriller about a nanny accused of murder and a possibly haunted house. Lots of secrets are uncovered so I suggest going in blind if possible. The audiobook is a solid production as well. I‘m not sure how I feel about the ending though, still thinking about it. 4⭐️

This was a really solid modern gothic tale of secrets, lies, and murder. A gothic atmosphere with a clever suspension of tension, I enjoyed this, but it fell a bit flat with it‘s rushed ending. The high tech home management system was a fun addition, and Rowan made for a believable narrator. But I started to feel some of the tropes of the genre got repetitive. Unsettling noise here…unexplained doors/windows opening there…creepy kids, unfriendly housekeeper etc. A fun read, but not particularly memorable or unique.

Cinfhen Yeah, Ruth Ware isn‘t a favorite of mine 😬 2y
KarenUK @Cinfhen Her writing is fine… just no surprises with the stories, and the characters aren‘t memorable enough. I‘m just over mystery thrillers right now. I think🤷‍♀️.Except I can‘t wait to read the third murder club! Those characters are just lovely! 💕 2y

Whoa. This was eerily good. Think Bly Manor, with Turn of the Screw, with a bit of crime feel in there… to me it ended a bit abruptly, and even when there was 20 min left on my audio I kept thinking “HOWS THIS GONNA END SO SOON”?! But it‘s prob for the best, quit while you‘re ahead, right? Recommend it for fans of mild horror and suspense 🤘🏽

I loved this #NewYearWhoDis pick! Ware takes the reader fully inside her protagonist‘s world, and it‘s a creepy, tense, relatable ride. (Freaking out over footsteps in the nonexistent room above your head is a universal experience, yes?) I figured out what was going on, but I was so immersed in the atmosphere that that didn‘t hurt my enjoyment even a little bit.

I did some #audioknitting yesterday in company with this creepy #NewYearWhoDis book. The fox has a second eye!

The blurbs don‘t tout THE TURN OF THE KEY as a retelling of THE TURN OF THE SCREW, but that‘s what it is, right? I haven‘t read the original book, but I did watch THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR and this seems to have a lot of similarities with that. (No lesbians yet, alas. I always hope there‘ll be lesbians and/or bi women in a cast.)

Started off slowly building the suspense and made me quite invested in the main character's story, but the ending just ruined it completely. I found it quite predictable and anticlimactic, as well as rushed for whatever reason. Still tension building and character building remain the strongest points of this book for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I don‘t often read books like this, but this one makes me want to! Finishing it at work was hilarious as multiple coworkers asked me if I was ok as the story wrapped up 😂 Ware crafts a lot of twists - some I guessed & some I did not - and I enjoyed the ride for sure! This is a book club book, and I‘m glad, as always, for the push to read different genres. Also, the audiobook was incredible. Highly recommend experiencing the book that way.
