Ayiti HB
Ayiti HB | Roxane Gay
From New York Times-bestselling powerhouse Roxane Gay, Ayiti is a powerful collection exploring the Haitian diaspora experience. In Ayiti, a married couple seeking boat passage to America prepares to leave their homeland. A young woman procures a voodoo love potion to ensnare a childhood classmate. A mother takes a foreign soldier into her home as a boarder, and into her bed. And a woman conceives a daughter on the bank of a river while fleeing a horrific massacre, a daughter who later moves to America for a new life but is perpetually haunted by the mysterious scent of blood. Originally published by a small press, this edition will make Gay's debut widely available for the first time, including several new stories. 'These early stories showcase Gay's prowess as one of the voices of our age' (National Post, Canada).

This is an excellent collection of stories about the Haitian diaspora. The subject matter is often difficult and disturbing, but the writing is brilliant and vivid.

A short collection of stories about Haiti, and Haitians, and the Haitian diaspora. Sad, painful, but also brilliant. A sucker punch to the heart.

Roxane is one of my favorite writers and gets a love of love on Litsy, so it‘s no surprise that I loved her debut. She packs quite a punch in under 3 hours of book! There was a bit more erotica than I like, but she is equally deft with fiction and nonfiction. I can now recommend her whole canon. 😉

I love her voice on the #audiobook!

This was a powerful collection of short stories. A definite content warning for sexual assault for people considering reading this one! Gay has woven such a variety of different narratives that centre Haiti or Haitian people, from the mystical to the mundane. Well worth the read! #queerbooks

My first ever Litsy #bookhaul post! This was a haul from @strandbookstore from a little over a year ago. My third Litsy post ever! Sadly I‘ve only read the top book thus far, although Gourmet Rhapsody and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo have both moved up in priority on the TBR list. Thanks for the fun challenge @Lcsmcat ! #bookhaulchallenge

I finished listening to this as I touched up my nails. This was a collection of short stories about Haitians and Haitian Americans. Each different, and each compelling in its own way. Atmospheric and engaging. Roxane Gay is an undeniably good writer.

Absolutely stunning writing in this collection of short stories, all related in one way or another to Haiti. Gay is such a precise writer -- some of these stories are short -- just a page or two, but she tells them in a way that makes the reader connect with the characters immediately. Highly recommend. #reversereadathon

Returning these amazing books to my local library. Ayiti was a brilliant collection of early Roxanne Gay stories set in Haiti or about Haitians. The Poet X is a series of poems that tells the story of a teen exploring her creativity and navigating her adolescence.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Roxane Gay has such a command of the short story format that she is able to bring such depth and complexity in such a short word count. I loved the sensual ‘forbidden‘ love in Of Ghosts and Shadows, but was also floored by the harrowing multigenerational story of life born in conflict in In The Manner of Water or Light. This was a brilliant collection and a great starting point for those new to Gay‘s fiction.
